Fabulous Beach Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Surfer Beach Hotel in August 2004. It was WONDERFUL. The location was perfect -- it's on the boardwalk and just steps to the most popular restaurants/bars and great shopping. The room was recently renovated and was very clean and comfortable. We had a gorgeous ocean view and could hear the surf from our room. The hotel is just minutes to the Gaslamp, La Jolla and Coronado. If you plan to spend time on the beach -- and I'd recommend that you do -- bring your own towels. The hotel's complimentary beach towels were tiny -- we each had to use three in order to lay down.

My best friend, sister and I decided to go to San Diego for my b-day on Aug 9th 2004 because we live in Phx and wanted to get out of the heat. We decided to stay in Pacific beach as we usually stay in Ocean Beach. We didnt have a place to stay and came upon the Surfer. We got a great deal on our room, the staff (especially Bianca and Martin) is phenominal and the view and access to whatever you need is excellent. The restaurant attached to the Surfer is called World Famous and is also very good. Also, Iwould take a short walk down the beach to the Green Flash for cocktails and/or dinner. One more thing..It was hard to find someone who knew where anything was or how to get there but Bianca was a huge help in that department, too. She really knew her way around.

Disappointed in the new makeover

from A TripAdvisor Member
I also stayed at the Surfer for the past many summers & stayed in the "family" suite. I was disappointed in the MODERN makeover. I would have rather seen a more beach type effect & decor. Not much storage space in the bath room & the kitchen is no longer a kitchen with all utensils. It is a wet bar and to high at that. I feel real bad as I have LOVED staying at the Sirfer in the past. I will be looking for a new place for next summer. Sorry new owners took over. Something good was lost when that happened.!!

Family Tradition

I have been going to the Surfer since I was 5 yrs old, I am now 32 and the Surfer is only place I stay. You cant beat it .. Staff is great and the View is killer... As long as they are there so will I be ..

Funky but fun

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in April 2004. As others have commented, this is a very fun place, and the World Famous restaurant and bar are right on the premises and very good. We had a 1st floor room the first night, which had VERY old/dilapidated furnishings. There is no A/C and it was warm, but we were nervous about leaving the sliding door open for a breeze as it opens directly into the pool area and anyone could walk in on you easily. The second and thirds nights, we switched to a room on the third floor, which was smaller but which we liked better because we could leave the slider open all night. The front desk staff was very accomodating and friendly. This is a fun place to be ... you're right in the middle of the action on Pacific Beach boardwalk, but don't expect luxury furnishings and amenities!

dissapointed in the facelift. family unit???

from A TripAdvisor Member
The surfer is the only place that I have stayed at while in San Diego. I used to agree with the all the reviews. I was one of the first people to stay in the newley renovation family unit 401. ( only the 4th floor has been renovated so far) The storage in the bathroom is lacking, actually it is close to nothing. There is no counter space around the sink and just two hooks behind the door. Now where does a "family" put all their stuff?? Also the divider between te living area and bed area is gone? We loved having that in the past, because we could put the kids to sleep and then slide the divider over and not worry about the noise or lights bothering them. The balconies are no longer private. The 4th floor is one large balcony. You don't have that secure or private feeling. Also the kitchenette area is now closer to a wet bar, very small sink, and no utensils. The tables and lamps are VERY modern, the tables are these black round disks with a pole . My kids almost knocked them down several times. The sitting table is this metal set that looks more like patio furniture, not comfortable at all. It is VERY clean with new carpet and paint, but I was so dissapointed with the other changes. Although the staff was EXREMELY friendly, it seems like the surfer is looking to appeal to the younger single crowd. Not the families. Maybe they will now change the unit name to the Vacation Suite, not the Family unit.
We were very dissapointed, but we will be looking for somewhere new to stay next year.

the Surfer is the shizzle

The Surfer is the place to stay in San Diego. You can't beat it. For anyone that's stayed at the Sea Sprite in Redondo, its the same gig.

What a Place!

If you are looking for beach atmosphere, at a decent price, this is the place. This hotel is pure fun. It is RIGHT on the beach and we had a 4th floor non smoking room, #406. The rooms are clean, old, and maintained, but you are not staying here for the great accomodations, you are staying here for the ocean. The hotel is getting a much needed facelift soon, but again, it is clean, and basic. Our room (as all I think) had a balcony and we slept with the sliding glass open, so we could hear (and see) the waves all night long. Walk the beach at midnight, next morning get up and walk it with a cup of coffee from the boardwalk. Lots to do close also. I have stayed at lots of hotels, but this is by far the best experience I have ever had. The Hilton it is not in regards to accomodations, but the Hilton can't touch the soul like this great place.

Great place to stay!

Boardwalk- beach out front door. Clean rooms, nothing fancy but very comfortable. Accomodating and friendly staff. Free parking on site.
Great places to eat nearby - try Joe's Crab Shack and Kono's - excellent food and atmosphere at both. Looking forward to our next visit and stay here.

The Surfer Motor Lodge was soooo great to stay at!! Not only did we get a wonderful room to stay in, but we got prompt service the next day too!! If I ever go to San Deigo I will most definetly stay at the Surfer Motor Lodge, and that's a fact.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

the mission best place for breakfast in Mission Beach. The cinnamon french toast is amazing. Go early, because the crowds line up around the block

Visit the Old Town area Good restaurants and interesting shops - plenty of safe parking, educational exhibits and easy to get to off of rt 5 north

June Gloom Being a San Diego native, I can tell you that the weather is usually pleasant most of the year but for some reason the fog never seems to break in June. The locals call it June Gloom! June is considered "high season" and you'll pay more to stay during that time. You'd be better off going a month earlier or later. Trust me.
