Doggie Delight

I was a bit hesitant to stay at the Ocean Beach Hotel after reading a couple of iffy reviews but took the plunge for the sake of Daisy our black Lab. Luxurious it is not: actually rather basic but acceptable. Ocean Beach Hotel redeems itself by welcoming dogs and it's proximity to Dog Beach. The staff was friendly and helpful and seemed to really like pets.
Our room was adequate and clean but in need of minor rehab and facelift.The walls would be better off with a new coat of paint and a spot on the bathroom wall needed patching. Screens for the windows and patio doors would be welcome and the bathroom was so tiny 2 adults could not fit in at the same time.That said it was perfect for a doggie dream vacation. The room had tile floors, a small fridge and microwave. The private small outdoor patio was perfect for enjoying a glass of wine and the lovely common garden terrace was great for entertaining visitors. There is also an outdoor shower and our dog saw more of that than she would have liked. We stayed Tuesday through Saturday and noise was not a problem even though our room was on busy Newport. Perhaps if we stayed over on Sat night it may have been an issue since the neighborhood does not lack for colorful youthful folk. All in all it was wonderful for us and our dog. Definately will stay again.

Excellent, Relaxin time

I made a road trip to San Diego with my wife and I wanted to stay on the beach. I immediately saw this hotel and knew it was the right one for this trip. The management and staff was excellent. They were courteous and made my search for a great hotel complete. For a smaller hotel with no big corporate name, I felt like an important celebrity. Even though I got an ocean view room, each room provides the great beach exprience. They are also pet friendly and provide separate balaconies for your loved pets. Thanks OBH!

Good Location

Ocean Beach Motel is well located, near shops, restaurants and directly across the street from the beach and pier. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is no restaurant on site, but lots nearby. The hotel's walls are paper thin. You hear everything! The amenities are so-so. This is okay for a night or two. If younger you'd probably like this hotel. If you want more peace and quiet then I'd reccomend another hotel.

If your looking for an upscale resort hotel keep lookng,but if you are looking for a comfortable hotel footsteps from the beach , great restaurants closeby,along with alot of the local hangouts this is the place! Gotta walk down to Dog Beach, grab a burrito and shop all the surf shops! Great San Diego atmosphere! Park your car at Ocean Beach Hotel and walk San Diego's ocean district!

Twice a year my (2) sisters take my 82 year old mother on a girls only weekend. This year we decided on San Diego as my daughter lives there. We booked a room, but were not able to get a view room. When we arrived, the staff asked us if we wanted to upgrade to a view room. YES!!!!! we said. For $10.00 more we had the view of the pier and ocean.
Now, I want to add that it was noisy, crowded in the room as it is an older remodeled motel, but since it was Oktoberfest that weekend and the partyers were so much fun to watch from our balcony, earplugs solved the noise problem for me. Ocean Beach is like a step back in time to what the beach towns must have been like in the 50's and early 60's. Loved the antique shops and food right across the street is out of this world!!!!!!

This is a cheap motel, but a NICE cheap motel with a killer location. If you are perhaps an older person looking for something genuinely nice; go elsewhere. This is a great place for younger folks looking for a cheap place to crash. It's clean, right next to Dog Beach, walking distance to the beach, etc.

Poor value for money

Overall, I would not recommend the Ocean Beach Hotel. On the plus side, the location is great and the staff generally OK (although they were not helpful if you had a slightly unusual request). On the down side, the maid service was terrible (rooms often not cleaned til 3pm, clean cups not always provided), the walls were paper thin (we were woken up at 6am almost every day by next door's TV and chat), and the room facilities were poor (weak shower and very draughty door. We were there during a cold spell and the room was freezing - the small heater was completely ineffective when the wind blew through the door). The rooms were small by US standards, but adequate for those used to travelling in Europe. It was not worth $120 per night and I would not stay there again.

You can't beat how close to the ocean this is. The rooms are not fancy, but were clean. We didn't have a noise problem, there was both an air conditioner and a heater, and the staff was nice. There are a ton of places to eat, drink, and shop within two blocks, ranging from upscale to burgers. A previous reviewer suggested Motel 6 as a substitute. Well, Motel 6 on Hotel Circle charges over 60$ a night for a view of the freeway, and the only things within walking distance are other hotels and gas stations. Ocean Beach is not for people looking for a sedate, premium amenities, mini-bar kind of San Diego vacation. It is for those looking to kick back, enjoy or remember their youth, eat some good food (we heartily recommend Hodad's Burgers and the El Rancho Taco Shop), walk on the pier and just live a little.

We loved the Ocean Beach Motel. You absolutely cannot beat the price for the proximity to the ocean and the beach lifestyle. It was centrally located to all the sights of San Diego. The managment was courteous and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a blast.

A $39 rip off

What a disappointment. Great location, but the facility is second rate. No amenities - cheap soap and shampoo, no room ventilation, a really noisy location (all night long). I'd expect this in a $39 room, not $ 150. At least they could offer hair dryers, since nothing dries in 95% humidity.

Stay somewhere else - anywhere else. Didn't sleep, fixtures (new!!) broken and loose. Rooms small. Only positive is that it's right on the beach. Talk about exploitation.

Presidio of San Diego The Presidio of San Diego is one of the string of California Mission made famous by Fr. Junipero Serra. However, this is no longer a consecrated church. It's a museum, and you need to shell out $5/adult to enter. Serra would turn over in his grave. Nearby "Old Town" San Diego is worth a visit, however. The pleasant climate means that plenty of clapboard and adobe buildings have survived, and you can visit them in between the tourist shop junk.

Bring your beach cruiser! That's it- everyone here rides cruisers, it's flat on the beach, and you will miss yours! So if you're driving, bring your cruiser!
