Great view, horrible staff

If you want a great view stay at the Dana Inn on Mission Bay but if you want hospitality you won't find it here! There staff caters to no one! Rude, rude, rude. I paid over 300.00 dollars a night for a room overlooking the bay and called to ask why there was no parking and the staff manager Mrs. Rodriguez informed me when you go to the Ralphs you have to find parking yourself and that there are not enough parking spaces to accomodate each room. Mrs. Rodriguez offered no excuses for me having to hike my son over across two parking lots to get to our pricy room. She says they account for the fact that some guests don't drive.

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Dana on Mission Bay Hotel

Great location - walk to Sea World!

from Foodie2006
We stayed at the Dana Inn because the Paradise Point Resort bumped our reservation two days before arrival, and paid for one night of our stay here. We were very disappointed to lose our place at the resort, but the Dana Inn actually turned out to be a better choice for us. We have two toddlers, so the fact that we could walk to Sea World (15 minutes to entry gate) made a big difference for us. The room we had was right on the marina, and was quiet except for the shuffle board and ping pong table outside in the courtyard. The rooms are remodeled, and small but comfortable. My one complaint is that the carpet was dirty and looked quite used. The rest of the room was clean. Room service was prompt from the Red Hen Restaurant. Hearty breakfasts, nothing fancy. The front desk staff and concierge were extremely helpful and friendly. Their recommendation of Luigi's Italian Restaurant near the beach was great - we had a wonderful, casual dinner there. We would recommend this hotel for families that plan to spend most of their time at area attractions.

Good location, good for families

The room and bathroom were a bit smaller than I expected, but they were clean and comfortable. The grounds were lovely. The pool area is great spot for kids and a lot of fun. Caution - the pool area is noisy and hours are not enforced (we were awakened at 6:30 a.m. one morning).
Don't stay in a poolside room and expect quiet. Restaurant had great service with very average food.

Good location..can be somewhat noisy

Stayed at Dana Inn April 15-19, 2004. Location close to Sea World. Bus stop right across street so virtually any place in San Diego is within distance of local transit by bus or trolley. Mission Beach is over the bridge about a nice one and half mile walk. Bikes can be rented at the Inn to traverse all the pathways in the area. The restaurant on the premise prepared generous meals--food like homecooked, basic American fare--but we were always satisfied. Our room was clean and we didn't feel the age of the furnishings detracted at all from our stay. We had only a shower and would have liked a bathtub though. Staff was friendly and helpful, especially the bellhops who helped us with tours and acquainted us with the local transport system. The only complaint we had--and if you are planning to stay here, this would be wise to remember---we were placed in building 500 which was close to the highway and we often heard a lot of highway noise, especially at night. One night there was a loud party of teenagers in our same building and we thought we wouldn't get any sleep at all; however, we called the front desk and the problem was taken care of after a few warning visits. I think we would have been spared a lot of the noise problems by upgrading, but we didn't really want to pay any more money. Stay away from any room with a 500 number if you want a more pleasant stay. The Dana Inn is expanding with a beautiful new section which will open in the summer of 2004. New pool and rooms facing the bay. If I go again, I will ask for a room in this area.

Great place to stay

We could not have been happier. Clean nice rooms, great location, pool, Jacuzzi, restaurant, all very good. We can recommend Dana Inn.

great place for families

from APennero
Just returned from our stay at the Dana Inn. I booked them after reading reviews from with website. I did not consider the dated decor a negative. What impressed me here was the service. From the shuttle drivers to the maid service. All were friendly, helpful and prompt.
Even though visited the zoo and Seaworld the hight of the trip for my 9 yr old son was the pool and ping pong tables at the Dana Inn. It was spring break and there were many families. He made friends around the pool that he swam with for days. The food at the Ren Hen was basic but but very well prepared and the service was excellent.

Loved it! See you all soon!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been there a couple of times over the course of the past few years and the latest one was last week. Each and every time, I have had excellent service with clean rooms. For a family, this is definitely the way to go! Right across from SeaWorld and on the bus line that takes you directly to Mission Beach....and complimentary shuttle to and from the airport. You can't beat it.....See you in a month or so for a repeat stay, once again with my children.

s Motel!

This is a tired hotel that needs a major update. It is a 1950's motel that happens to be in the right location. The setting is great and it does have easy access to a lot of San Diego but that is where it stops.
The resturant is excelent but very basic. Good food, great service, it just needs some updating. Good 2 star "motel"

Good Value

My husband and I (retired but in our 50's) spent 5 nights at the Dana Inn in Nov. 2003. We knew from reading the reviews that this wasn't going to be a deluxe hotel, but that was ok with us because we planned to be out sight-seeing every day. The rooms are very average, but clean! Pretty courtyard. I can see why it caters to families; lots to do at the marina and close to Sea World and Mission Beach. In fact, we walked back to our room after visiting Sea World. I will say that if I had only planned to stay at the hotel and just relax around the pool, I probably would have chosen a fancier place, but it was just fine for our agenda and a reasonable price too. The Red Hen restaurant on the premises is great for breakfast.

Not Ideal

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband booked a Disneyland/San Diego trip for our Honeymoon last November, and our final stay was at the Dana Inn and Marina. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. The entire hotel was under construction, and the rooms were less than ideal. The furnishings were very old, and the bathroom was not ideal, due to the fact that you had to hold down the handle just to flush. The view of the pool was nice, and the staff was helpful. Just not a good place to finish out the Honeymoon. Our travel agent must not have done the research. Call ahead to make sure the construction isn't going to be near your room.

Lives up and beyond its great reputation

Even before checking in, the staff were very helpful with confirmation of the booking and the late check-in. After checking in, we got a phone call asking if we had settled in and if there was anything we needed.
The internet connection wasn't working too well and after the two visits of Maintenance (both within minutes of calling) we were called up to ask if everything went well and to let them know of any needs.
This kind of customer service is exceptional and as we left, the directions to the gas station were perfect. Also, how many hotels tell you not to use their vending machines as the shop outside is a lot cheaper?! Sea World is close by and the main freeway links to other places are right outside. People, when you visit San Diego, choose this gem of a place!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Sea World My sister in law and I had the dumb idea to go on the Atlantis ride at 4 p.m. We got so drenched...not just a little wet...but miserably wet. Right when the cool air started rolling in. I have never felt so gross and wet and cold. DO Not go on this ride without a change of clothes and a poncho.
