s OK...not that great

from A TripAdvisor Member
Well I went to San Diego with a couple of my cousins and stayed at the Bristol Hotel. Here's the infomation you want to know. PROS: Right in downtown, close to gaslamp, nice decor, candy in the rooms, free internet access, valet guys were fast and friendly, provides q-tips and cotton balls in the batrooms, kept CLEAN and updated. CONS: Door in bathroom is a sliding door that does not lock, elevator door opens even before it stops!! and it takes forever!! double beds are too small, bad view (greyhound station), Front desk staff is not as friendly as they should be. Gym is really really small. Sorry to say I wouldn't stay here again, even though it's a cute little hotel.

Believe the horrors you have read about this hotel because they are all true! I have experienced the first hand this past weekend. If you want to relax and be treated to a nice weekend DO NOT STAY HERE! You honestly will regret it. To start the managment staff is very unprofessional. You know a manager doesn't take is job seriously when he wears jeans to a professional work environment. Then you try to exlpain why you are unhappy with the puddles of water in the stairwells and immediately YOU are accused of being the probelm.
Due to shear incompetence, a wedding party was stuck in an elevator for 3 hours because no one could get a hold of a manager!

Please, for your sake and others, do not stay here.

Excellent, except the restaurant

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our stay at the Bristol was wonderful. The room was comfortable and cheerful. The decor fabulous. The staff was helpful and friendly. The lobby is beautiful, though we tend not to spend time in lobbies. It's a good first impression. The only thing we did not like is the food at the restaurant. The service there was slow, unlike the valet or hotel staff. Other than that, it was terrific. We spent a few days there and would return. There are plenty of restaurants in San Diego, so the lack of a great restaurant in the hotel does not hold us back.

My husband and I take frequent weekend trips to San Diego. We have stayed at numerous hotels through out the downtown area. With the new ballpark open it is hard to find an available room with a good rate in any of the hotels near the ballpark when the Padres are in town. We stayed at the W last trip and while we enjoyed it the final cost for the 2 nights was more than we wanted to spend. The W is a couple blocks away from the Bristol so we thought we would give it a try since it was $100 dollars cheaper a night than the "W".
The Room: Our room was overlooking 1st street (the Greyhound bus station side). The opposite side of the hotel looks directly into a building with no view - we were happy with the view. The room showed some wear but was clean. You could notice where the paint had been touched up, there were some scratches in the wood on the furniture pieces and our TV button was damaged but worked. The bathroom and the linens were all kept very clean. The best part of the room was the free internet access - a plus in any room for us. The noise at night was normal for any hotel that is the middle of a city - sirens, trucks, ect. with little noise from the Greyhound station.
The Staff: We had little contact with the staff. Since we know the city so well we had little need to interact with them. The Location: We never take our car to cities like San Diego or San Francisico when there is a great public transportation system available. We rode Amtrack and then used our 2 day trolley pass to get to the hotel - just one stop away. Both the Blue and Orange Line trolley run outside of the hotel which makes it easy to get to any city destination. We found that the overall neighborhood was not too bad. The homeless in San Diego can be found in any location.
Unless we find a better deal we would return to the Bristol for the location and the price. With the money we saved at the Bristol we payed for our train tickets, bought a pair of baseball tickets and had a dinner. We considered it money well spent.

t do it!

Simply the worst hotel we've stayed in. Took a chance, even though it wasn't even in AAA's book. We had a room overlooking the back of the greyhound station. Neighborhood isn't great to begin with, but it was very loud, 24 hours. Room was NOT clean, smelled of smoke, even though they insisted it was a non-smoking room. During our entire stay (thankfully only one night!) they had no hot water! When we called to tell them, they said it was "user error" (I guess I can't figure out the taps when I'm not home.) Turned out the entire hotel had the same problem, but they wouldn't admit it. We got our money back at chekcout, but not without a huge ordeal. Best described as seedy, unfriendly and filthy.

noisy hotel, difficult with billing dispute

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel was basic but decent. It offers few amenities but few are needed in that part of town. They, however, charged me for a bottle of water from the mini-bar that I never consumed and said the only way to dispute the charge was through my credit card company. The desk attendant was rude throughout the exchange telling me that the company would go broke if they took back all the charges customers disputed.
Frankly, if your customers are disputing enough charges to send the hotel into bankruptcy, the company should not be operating to begin with.

Nothing but Problems

from A TripAdvisor Member
First problem: Despite confirmation of my room reservations with the hotel the day before, upon arrival I was told my reservation had been canceled two weeks prior by an internet service I didn't use to book the hotel. Reservation was miraculously found 15 minutes later. Second problem: No hot water for shower in the morning. Third problem: Charge $16 for "honor bar" purchases via credit card when I never received a key for the honor bar in the first place. Overall Problem: Horrible Customer Service!! Every time I discussed a problem with the staff, they were rude and unhelpful.

Rude and Unprofessional Management

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed at the Bristol twice before, both times were regrettable. First time: NO DOOR TO THE BATHROOM - just the hinges! And no hot water all morning. I sent a letter informing the hotel of my poor experience, and received a voucher for 2 complimentary nights (despite the fact that my original stay was for 3 nights). Second stay: I stayed there only because I had the voucher, and upon arrival they had my reservation WRONG - and had already CANCELLED my reservation because they claimed I was a "no show", when really they were the ones who made the mistake. Management --- and said "'well, you were the one who pulled a no-show", among other worse unpleasantries. I also heard this manager refer to me as --- to his co-worker". I have never come across such unprofessional management. Please do not disappoint yourself by staying at this hotel!

Bristol San Diego

A completely delightful hotel. Small enough to exude warmth and large enough to provide excellent service. The rooms are fresh, bright and clean, the reataurant provides both conventional and interestingly adventurous choices and the staff are courteous and warm.A major plus for for me was the free in room high speed internet. This hotel is gem.

Good, but...

from Shawnpo
I have stayed here several times over the last few weeks on business and it is generally speaking a decent place to stay if you want to be downtown. Pros: proximity to Gaslamp, food in restaurant, decor. Cons: cater to party crowd on weekends (very, very noisy), don't seem to keep up with maintenance (lack of hot water - common theme among reviewers), fitness equipment, TV. Even though I don't think I'll stay there again, I could possibly recommend staying there if it was from Sunday to Thursday but definitely not on the weekend if you are not a partier.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Food Close By There is a sub shop directly across from the hotel on First Ave. It's got good coffee in the morning and the sandwiches were huge. Also, there is a 7-11 and a Pizza Hut less than a block away if you need something quick and close by.

public transit to Qualcomm Getting on at the Old Town transit stop rather than downtown will save a lot of time.

Lots of Vagrants and Bag Ladies Be prepared to see lots of homeless, vagrants and bag ladies in this part of San Diego. Seem harmless enough, but clearly the City fathers are not paying attention as this could kill their Tourist industry over time.
