Good hotel for families

Just came back from a 2 day stay here in the "large 1 bedroom" suite. The room could use some updating but it was clean and had everything we needed, although we couldn't get the high-speed internet to work. Breakfast was perfect for our family of 2 adults and 2 children. The location was also good as we could walk to some good restaurants for dinner and Starbucks was across the street. Unlike some others, we didn't particularly notice sirens after the first one.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the hotel is excellently located in Hillcrest, but also is surrounded by hospitals so ambulance sirens are likely at any hour of the night..try to get a room at the back off Washington, they may be quieter. The rooms are roomy, but I also heard that the internet access was non-operational while we were there. The hot tub also had a notice on it saying it had been closed by order of health authorities!!! Breakfast was so-so.

Kitchen was clean and had everything we needed to do our own cooking for a night or two, which we needed after 5 weeks on the road.

Ups and downs

The good-nice spacious rooms, full kitchen. The bad-internet service must be some guy holding an aluminum dish up on the roof-really bad, cuts off every 5 minutes. Front desk doesn't seem to know anything about anything-can't give directions, can't give change, hopeless. The ugly-this hotel is right next to TWO hospitals, one with a helicopter pad. Sirens screaming all night, copters landing and taking off, don't plan on sleep. I can't return here.

Great Location

The location was great, just walk outside you have access to tons of shops and restaurts. There wasn't a place I didn' like. The Bombay had great food and if you want a good breakfast you can go to Hash House a Go Go...very good..but be warned that the portions are HUGE. The hotel needs to be renovated, it hasn't been since the mid 90s, the parking is tight, although free..HUGE PLUS. The rooms huge and were very clean with fresh towels, dishes were washed for you. Full size kitchens were great, except it says you can make toast although they do not provide a toaster, but you can use the oven to toast. Also, even thought the bathrooms were very clean, the water temperature constantly fluctuated while taking a shower.

We just came back from our trip to California .We stayed 4 nights at the Sommerset Suites .It was great. It really was like having your own apt there.The area is fabulous. So many incredible restaurants.We went to the Bombay which was great for India cuisine.We also took the kids to the Corvette Diner and it was a blast.Both these restaurants are about 1 block away. Also there is a candy store called the Candy Depot right near Bombay the fellow that runs it was so nice ,the candy selections were fun .The shuttle sevice from the hotel worked very well for us .and was way cheaper than a cab.They will take you anywhere within 2 miles I believe and that is lots of places as the hotel is so central.We liked the hotel we payed $ 111 per night and really this was a great deal.

I read all the reviews here and made the choice to stay at the Sommerset Suites on our last trip.
I regretted that choice as soon as i walked into the room. It did have a seperate sleeping area, which was what i needed with 2 small children. That was the only thing i liked about this hotel. I stay at hotels often and for what we paid i was dissapointed. Maybe it was only the room we stayed in, i'm not sure.
The carpets were filthy! I have a baby that crawls and has allegies and this posed a huge problem for a 2 day stay. The room smelled (from what i assume was cigarette smoke or pets).
I did like that it had a refridgerator, oven and real sink. However the sink leaked and the garbage disposal clogged.
The breakfast was a disaster. There were not enough spoons or forks to go around and the lines were too long. We just wanted to give the kids oatmeal, after making it realized there were no spoons. We left with 2 hungry and crying kids and ate elsewhere. It was nice they did have oatmeal and waffles available.
Maybe this would be an ok hotel if you stayed on a weekday or don't mind dirty floors. Parking was free. I am going to persue a refund for at least 1 nights stay. We only stayed because it was a holiday weekend and hard to find another hotel 2 room suite. I would not stay here again. I'll stay at a Staybridge if i need a 2 room suite again. I've had ok luck with them.

Great value at Sommerset

We just returned from a California vacation and spent 4 nights at the Sommerset suites. For value it couldn't be beat. We got a 2 room suite for an internet special averaging ~134 per night.

The pros: Free parking, free continental breakfast, minutes to Seaworld, the Zoo, Old Town or Gaslamp district and easy walking into the Hillcrest area where there are a number of decent places to eat. And if you are there from 5-6:30 there is free pop, beer, wine and some snakcs on weeknights. Staff was friendly and courteous.

The cons: Parking is tight on one side of the lot, they have them marked for compact cars but larger cars park there and make it a tight fit. The mattress (as pointed out by another reviewer) was a bit thin on the sofa bed, but our daughter was light enough that it did not matter to her.

Compared to what some of the other hotels were charging this was a great deal.

Clean, Decent Place in a Great Neighborhood

For San Diego, this was a very reasonably priced hotel. The rooms were cleaned well everyday and were quite satisfactory. The hotel gave us an upgrade to their largest room on the property -- a wonderful treat with plenty of room to spread out.

The Hillcrest neighborhood was great! There were lots of small, neighborhood restaurants with excellent food.

The hotel had free parking -- a rarity in San Diego and transportation to the airport. The continental breakfast and social hour were okay (very basic, average food), but the wonderful lady who hosted them made up for the mediocre food.

The only drawback was the sofabed. The mattress was a bit on the thin side. I believe that it is time for the hotel to replace the sofabed mattresses.

Good Location - spacious rooms

Stayed here for a weekend. Currently the place is redoing their pool area. I believe they said it would be completed in April or so. Our room had a king size bed and was spacious. Good view out the balcony as we saw some fun times. :^)
My partner and I are gay so this hotel was close to the bars. Hamburger Mary's was a happening place. Flicks on Friday is great deals with the $2.00 drinks. Happy hour from 5-6pm at Sommerset was good. Transportation provided to and from airport was also good. They also have transporation to the zoo. This place isn't high end but for the price and location you can't beat it.

Very convenient location, very family friendly

We stayed four days at Summerset Suites during our Thanksgiving weekend. We enjoyed our stay very much, there is a nice kitchenette equipped with everything you'd need to cook (there's free breakfast but we cooked eggs, bacon and things that we like to pamper ourselves). There are many nice restaurants nearby, a few supermarkets such as Whole Food, Starbucks and Carls Jr are both within walking distance. Its location is superb, close to all major attractions at San Diego. Staff is friendly, too. There is complimentary breakfast, social hour snack, and free parking. The only cons are that it is surrounded by hospitals. Yes, hospitals are on all four sides, so you'd expect to hear siren sometimes(we don't hear too much noise though due to the thick window) and the rooms are not as modern as other new ones. Overall, I will definitely stay here again.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Ca$h only.... the taxi drivers are very aggressive about getting cash only for fares, even if you call in and tell them that you plan on paying by credit card. I stayed there a week and out of 5 cabs I got into, only one did not hassle me about the credit card. My last cab, I called and told them about wanting to pay by credit card. And guess what? Nobody showed up. I had to hail a cab that was passing by on the street or risk missing my flight. My cab showed up after I had loaded up the hailed one, which was over 15 min after they'd promised to be there.

Hillcrest Area Hillcrest is a very safe, quaint and happening part of town. There are plenty of dining options, shops, and nice people in Hillcrest. If you stay at the Sommerset suites, take a walk around town, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Get a 3 day pass We were in San Diego for a 4 day visit. We purchased a 3 day transport pass from a Trolley Satation ( they all sell them at a vending machine. Cost $12 each ) , this includes unlimited transport on all buses and trolleys. You can go all the way to the Mexican Border and just walk over to Tijuana.
