Historical Traveller Reviews of San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina

Highly recommended

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here in mid July, 2004 (actually the 4th or 5th time I've stayed here in the past 10 years) and it was, as usual, a delight. My room was comfortable, everything was exactly as I expected in a Marriott. My balcony overlooked the marina, the harbor, Coronado island and the ocean - couldn't have been better.

Service was exceptionally good even though there was a major conference going on in the hotel and the ComicCon convention was starting at the convention center next door.

THe access to the convention center, Seaport Village, the harbor and the Gaslight only enhances the benefits of this hotel.

Do not stay here

If my stay at this Marriott hotel and Marina wasn't on our timeshare exchange points, I would have left the minute i stepped into the bathroom..

The Pros: Very well presented exterior... Very pretty pool and hotel was good looking, very apealing!! Hotel service was great, except housekeeping forgot to leave the shampoo and stuff one night, I had to remind her!!

The Cons: The hallways were musty, and I think they were working on this by closing off random hallways throughout our stay. There was highly Limited and expensive parking (It cost our friends $6 just to pick us up from our hotel and the $16 per night and its very hard to get a good spot). I found blood on top blanket as well as on bed sheet, and even on the blanket we slept with (very disgusting, they don't wash their duvets and feather blankets, so thats not just a stain) and the bathroom was not of 4 star quality... Shower curtain had mildew forming on the bottom of it, and was never remedied by the maid, shower head had mildew developing again (same thing, never cleaned) and the toilet had mildew as well..

THe worst of all was the fact that I left this hotel with a rash or bug bites all over my upper body, perhaps from their pool or dirty bed.. They really need to do something about this.. I didn't complain to them because I was barely even at the hotel, mostly seeing beautiful san diego!! But this hotel was such a waste of my timeshare points!!!

Oh yeah, one night we were walking around the pool and saw a mouse running through the bushes!! I'm never returning to this hotel again, I want to check out the one on coronado. I hope this helps you decide where to stay!!

Great Escape

Compared to other cities & locations visited in California, San Diego was a wonderful surprise! The Harbor Drive Marriott predicted all the wants & needs, & was there with the remedy, nearly before I asked! Personal, Efficient & Friendly are not adjectives I use lightly, but aptly appropriate to the 'inth' degree, across all depts. of staff. Even the doormen seemed genuinely interested in making my stay perfect. Comfy beds tout lots of down, making them difficult to leave each morning; a model location, with ample transportation to fit all budgets; trolleys are clean & serve most desired destinations, all the way to border, with unbelievable $5 fare for unrestricted rides for an entire day! Beautiful, & convenient bayside shopping in quaint little shops only a block away, with a $5 (for 2) bench&back tricycle ride back, should you overshop, or become weary. Or, many models of peddle-type vehicles can be rented right at the hotel, for 2-way convenience. Walk to Ralph's; a clean, super-stocked grocery store, with superior quality local wines, from $2.99! Friendly produce workers even let me taste unfamiliar fruit!! After a day of soaking in sights, sounds, & sampling reasonably priced, fresh culinary delights, a relaxing swim in the heated, outdoor pool is embelished with the sounds from an adjacent water fall. Front desk clerks wont tell you where the mail drop is, insisting on giving it personal attention, whether or not you're late arriving downstairs for your every-30-minute airport shuttle ($5), and shoulld you miss it, a friendly cutie will hail you a cab for an inexpensive taxi, for the 2-mile trip. Dont miss the fresh halibut at the "Fishermen's" 2blks. south. Old Town & the Mission area are a must, & the 20-min. ride down to the Olympic Training Center, made our $26/day Budget rental car a bargain. Another 20 got us to the border, where $7 allowed us to park, while a $2 each way, scuzzy bus took us to an unknown area in Tijuana. Some upscale shops beginning to emerge, offering wares by local artisans at varied prices. You'll have no problems finding places to quench your thirst; they'll find you! Dont miss a visit to one of the Indian casinos; at Viejo's (Rt. 8) a 57-store outlet stands adjacent to the casino for non-spinners. San Diego & vicinity (north of the border). San Diego has become my favorite vacation destination, & the downtown Marriott my favorite hotel!!

Very Nice Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife, 4-month old son and I stayed at this hotel from May 9-10 to celebrate our one year anniversary. From the time we checked in we were treated very well be the attentive staff. I learned from other guests reviews that if you want a room with a balcony and a great view to request the north tower. I had booked a bayview room online but upon arrival they were going to place us in the south tower. When we requested the north tower they moved us to a upper floor room with a fabulous view. This hotel is nicely appointed with lush grounds and a very nice swimming pool. It is very close to all the major attractions downtown has to offer. I especially liked it's proximity to Seaport Village. When we go back to San Diego we will definitely stay at this hotel again.TW

marriott vs. pedicabs

from A TripAdvisor Member
Do not go to this hotel they have crazy security people who try to tackle pedicabs in the process of bringing well paying customers back to their hotel and attempt to have them arrested for simply doing their job. I just wanted to get back to my hotel, and my driver had his picture taken as though he were a terrorist. Never trust anyone with only a mustache!!!

Loved this hotel

from caipaula
We just returned from a six night vacation stay at the San Diego Marriott & Marina. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated, comfortable and clean. The staff was very helpful, polite and friendly. We originally had a room in the South tower but changed to the North tower since the rooms have balconies which are wonderful. The bay views are well worth the extra money. The city views are ok but can be noisy from the passing city trains. The hotel has a great pool area and is within easy walking distance of the Gaslamp district (dining and clubs), Horton Plaza (shopping), Petco Park, Seaport Village, and the Embarcadero. We especially enjoyed being able to exit the hotel, walk along the water and see the fishing and pleasure boats, along with the aircraft carrier "Midway" that is about to open as a museum. We rented a car and were a very easy drive from all the major attractions. The convention center is next door so there were sometimes a lot of business people in the lobby but the hotel was very well staffed and able to handle it so we never had to wait for services and never felt crowded. We had kids with us ages 10 to 18. They all loved it and were never bored. We would stay there again anytime.

horrible customer service!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My Fiance and I stayed here last fall and loved it so much we decided to hold our wedding there. We signed a contract, sent invitations, our friends and family made reservations, pretty much everything was set....until we found out (with 2 months to go) that they put the site we chose under construction and they would be happy to still host the the pool. This hotel showed me that they care A Lot more about the big conventions that come thru town than my 'little' 30K wedding. We were livid! We have made plans elsewhere, but we are Still waiting to get our deposits back and it was A Lot of extra Stress, just because of their unprofessionalism and lack of customer service!!!!!

Lovely place to relax!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We (husband, teenage son and I) stayed at this beautiful property for one night and wished we'd booked for longer. We upgraded to a bay/ocean room on an upper floor for $25 additional (using a AAA rate) and loved the beautiful view from our balcony. We could easily walk to the Gaslamp District for dinner and to Seaport Village, as well as to view the harbor area. The pool is fantastic and the landscaping and grounds very lush and beautiful. We would jump at the chance to stay here again! And note that we are fussy and budget conscious; still, this met the needs of all of us.

good conference facility

from Cecili
Recently attended a conference here for 5 days The Hotel is designed for large conferences and there is plenty of conference rooms. The rooms were average in decor. The beds were quite comfortable. Was not too pleased with the bathroom, although large enough, I was not able to keep the door open on its own, without propping it open with the wastebasket. The rooms were small considering the price. Housekeeping decided to install a new shower curtain the last night of our stay, which seem like a nice gesture, although I did not request it. But the odor of the plastic was nauseating everytime you entered the bathroom.
Had a city side view which was nice. Beware that this side is noisy as the train passes by occassionaly and is very loud at the night. Loved the fact that the Marina, Seaport Village, Horton Plaza and Gaslamp District is a short walk nearby. The vending machines on the floor, were not stocked regularly, especially bottled water. There is a 24 hours Ralphs grocery store a couple blocks a way, which was convenient instead of paying hotel retail store prices for incidentials. Liked the location, but would only stay here for a conference and not a vacation stop. Staff was very friendly and attentive, especially at the front desk.

Never got to stay there

from A TripAdvisor Member
We Never got to stay there, because when I called to confirm our reservations I was told they could not promise me a non-smoking room or one with a king bed, however I was told that if I keep calling back they might find what I wanted. So much for getting reservations in advance. I cancelled my reservations and will go else where

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Casa De Pico One of the best places to eat mexican food!! Formerly located in Old Town, now located at 5500 Grossmont Center Dr. San Diego, CA 91942, they still have the same great food and margaritas! Once you try Casa de Pico, you will be hooked. The staff is great, they always do more than expected! The last time we were there my toddler son was very hungry and crying, and the server brought him a little soup while we waited for our dinner to arrive. My favorite is the carnitas!

Mall on 1st street and the Gas Lamp District Wonderful 4 story outdoor mall on 1st street! Really good deals at Abercrombie, Aeropostale, American Eagle, and Hallmark!! It's a must experience. Also, has a Ben & Jerry's!! The Gas Lamp District is amazing. You can walk the entire area, and see any kind of shop you can imagine. It's an experience in itselt!

Bondi-new hot spot On Friday and Saturday night, this seems to be the place to be. It is a new Australian restaurant on 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. The front is all open and the style is industrial (gray, metal) with some cool design features (glass jellyfish tenticles hanging from ceiling, seating in straw pods). They also have a unique breakfast menu.
