Historical Traveller Reviews of Ramada Inn and Suites Gaslamp Convention Center Hotel

It was a great experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
I went to San Diego for Experimental Biology convention. Booked a room at Ramada online. The price was very affordable. The hotel was in walking distance from Convention Center, about 10 min walk (nice and safe walk through downtown, Galsamp area). They also have a very nice restaurant (just opened up in the beginning of April they said) and they do room service (which is not very tipical for Ramadas). The restaurant was open very late, they have a nice bar there too.
What I also liked about the hotel is that they have free Internet access in the rooms. I have to work a lot on the computer so it was a great surprise for me that I stayed connected (free of charge!).
In general my opinion: nice, clean and sweet place. Good for both business and pleasure.

Awfully awful!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel was horrible. If I had been paying for that room, I would have demanded my money back. The trip was a gift though. The rooms are tiny. The hotel staff was rude. The toilet paper was cheap, the towels were crunchy, the food was terrible. The list just goes on and on. The first night we were there, we were awakened at 3am by the loud music coming from the nightclub next door! Thinking it was a rowdy party in a room down the hall, we called the front desk. After recieving no word back 15 minutes later, we called the front desk again to to told that it was the building next door and that they would do nothing about it. Finally the music shut off 45 minutes later, no thanks to the hotel. The night after that, it was a pair of girls on the balcony of that same club, chattering loudly. We almost asked to be moved, but that proved to be the last late night awakening. We were charged for the buffett, we were charged for two local calls. The only good thing about this hotel was the view from the roof!

Tower of Terror

from Gunnar12
If anybody has been to MGM Studios in Florida and is familiar with the Tower of Terror then they will know what this hotel is like. Horribly dated both in and out, pokey rooms not big enough even for a wardrobe or 2 bedside tables, and breakfast served on cardboard plates. We only stayed here because we couldn't find availability anywhere else, and to be fair the location is very good in the Gaslamp Quarter. But take heed, this bustling neighbourhood makes for noisy nights with no double glazing.
Also beware of worrying strangers off the street knocking on your door in the night begging - security is somewhat slack.

Fine

It is a nice place, clean, attractive and the staff is helpful. I booked it as part of a flight package so I saved about 200$/night which is a great deal. I liked getting to use a real fitness center 4 blocks away rather than having a treadmill in a closet which is what many places think is a fitness center and the breakfast buffet is great. I was on the 4th floor and used the stairs, which was no problem.

There was no place to do work in the room, the pull out desk area from the chest of drawers was too high to be a workspace, but I did find the tables in the lobby a pleasant work area with the player piano and the light from the front windows.

If you need a place with flash and luxury this is not a place for you. If you want a quiet, comfortable, place downtown, for students attending a professional meeting, couples or families on a budget this is a nice place with some style from the turn of the century. Naturally you have to give up some expectations of excess that most people have, but the style and class of the hotel is worth it.

Fair but not exceptional

I was a bit hesitant about booking this hotel after reading some of the reviews but it OK... I guess I got what I expected. The location was excellent and the hotel certainly has a character. We were lucky enough to get a first floor room so the elevator was not a problem, just one flight of lovely marble stairs to negotiate. The staff were pleasant and tried to be helpful although they were unable to tell me where the nearest Bank of America was.. somethng I thought they should know. The breakfast was reasonable and good value for $5 but the valet service was terrible. We waited 40 minutes for our car! Another downside was no internet terminal or guest laundry.. although we were allowed to use the ones at the Comfort Inn 2 blocks away.
The room was value for money as we were two couples travelling together and the 2 bedroom room was fine for us. For one couple, I would go for the Comfort Inn... less ambience but more facilities.. for less money

Unwanted

from A TripAdvisor Member
After completing a 2 week cruise, we had a day (March 6, 2005) we needed a hotel before our next destination. I had booked and paid for three rooms at the Ramada Convention Center a month prior to our arriving. When we arrived, there was one man working the desk, and he was completely involved in writing per diems for the week. After waiting at least 20 minutes, he told us the rooms were not ready, to come back in an hour. We came back about 2 hours later, no one in the lobby, but he still made us wait approximately 20 minutes before waiting on us. He told us he had no smoking rooms left, so we could not smoke, even though my reservation clearly stated smoking rooms. I have never felt so unwanted in my life. I will not return.

cute as a button

I love this place, The hotel is a Historical Hotel, built in the early 1900's I think. The staff were great. We did have to pay for parking but it is Downtown, we didn't need our car.

Great value

from dane811
I had a great experience with this hotel. We got the room at an awesomely discounted price. It ended up being a two bedroom hotel room, which was perfect because we had our daughter with us and she, of course, needed her privacy. :) She's 17. The staff was very nice and helpful. We got in late, or else we would have tried their $5 breakfast. By far, that is the cheapest breakfast I've seen in a long time. The beds were really comfortable and the location was awesome. Within walking distance to downtown San Diego. The only downside was the rooms were a little small. It was nice to have a two bedroom, though.

Booked before I read the reviews.

The reviews are true. We had to wait 15 mins for the Elevator and the stairs are twice as long due to the high old fashioned high ceilings. After being told twice by people that it was too full I had to push my way in. There was a woman who was terrified that the elevator cables would break even though there was room so that's why they told me "no room in this elevator". Only stay there if you get a smokin deal and you are young and going to the Gaslamp to party. Valet was a joke...I think they had to call the valet from some other property to deal with the cars so you are going to wait. Mixed reviews on the staff. The hotel is in a great location which was the saving grace but I would not return. If you can afford it stay at the Prava or the Courtyard which are a block away. FYI, I paid $150+tax+$15 valet on a Saturday. Ouch.

Be afraid, be very afraid

Prison cell, exactly. There was no closet, probably because the room itself is a closet. The carpet was sticky... need I say more? If you do stay here, which I highly discourage, do not go barefoot. There were three channels on the TV, 2 of which were the same. The most I can say for this "hotel" is that they had (hopefully) clean linens, and had a great view from the roof, which is a nice place for a rooftop picnic if you can stomach the tiny, "vintage" death trap of an elevator, hanging from pencil-thin cables, which takes you there. Also, the A/C unit, which is a window-mounted job, was broken. If you are a party-hard college student, this place might not be so bad.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Amtrak Amtrak drops you right off in the middle of downtown San Diego. Puchase bus and trolly passes within walking distance. Buy a 1 day trolley pass for around five dollars. You can take the trolley to Old Town, Seaside Village, & Downtown.

Great little Itallian place If you want to try a good little local Itallian place I highly recommend Fillippi's. There are a few around the San Diego area. The orginal, and I believe the best is located in Little Italy. It has a small deli up front with the dining area in the back. You will notice it because of the line of people standing out front waiting for a table at dinner time. There is another location I have tried in Pacific Beach that is a restuarant only. The food is still good but lacks some of the charm of the location in Little Italy.

Cheap eats For cheap eats on the go, visit Ralph's on Front Street (short walk from Convention Center). Iit has a large deli with sandwiches, soups, and salads.
