My party of 6 arrived with confirmation number in hand for 3 deluxe King w/balcony rooms. We had double-checked with the hotel 3 days earlier when we started out by car and the front desk confirmed our reservation. We arrived road weary the first night and were told that they had only one of the rooms we reserved, the other two being the “cozy queen.” "Cozy” is an understatement. 2 suitcases and 2 men couldn’t walk around the room. One person would have to stay on the bed to let the other move to and from the bathroom. THERE IS A REASON THE ROOM PICTURE ON THE WEBSITE IS OF THE CORNER OF THE ROOM.
We repeatedly asked for a manager and were told none were available in person or by telephone and concessions could not be made with out the approval of a manager.
We were concerned that the last arriving couple was not going to be able to fit in such tight conditions as he was 6'4 and 270 and needed a king bed to be comfortable let alone fit his wife.
Despite much pleading and complaining about how we had confirmed, we were told they couldn’t accommodate. We went to the car and searched another hotel nearby that had kings and went in to cancel the reservation and magically they had a room the third part of our party could have at no additional charge. If we could just be patient and accept the upgrade to a suite, all would be made good in the morning when a manager was available to discuss concessions.
The next morning we were made to feel like we were granted the privilege of having our reservations honored but no apology was forthcoming for the terrible room that we had stayed in and for having to wake up extra early to have time to deal with the hotel management.
Mr. Johnson, the front desk manager, told us that we would all be comp'd the parking expenditures for the poor customer service we had received and that the third couple would be "allowed" to stay in the suite for the remainder of the stay.
During the stay the rooms were not well cleaned and refreshed, one room didn’t get toilet paper restocked and we had to call and get some brought to us. After 3 calls, an extra roll was donated from another room. The extra toilet paper was eventually delivered to the wrong room.
The mirrors would fog from the shower and reveal pornographic images left by a previous guest; the refrigerators would not cool anything to below 57 degrees. You could not drink the complimentary coffee in the room because there were no cups in one room and only decaf another. The TV's were a different brand and size in each room, all circa 2000, no flat screens, no digital reception and the color tint function was broken in our room so we watched TV in blue and orange.
Breakfast was included with the stay but if you slept past 8am there was no French toast, bacon or sausage. They bill themselves as a "Hip Hotel near Sea World | Zoo"...anyone paying attention to anything "hip" knows you better have bacon.
This all culminated in a phone call from Mr. Johnson to my cell phone after leaving and 80 miles out of town telling us that it turns out since one of our party got the room they wanted, no one would be compensated for that first night and parking charges were added to two of our credit cards.

DONT STAY HERE unless you want to pay good money for a renovated broken down motor lodge, right off the loud freeway, directly under the flight path of landing jets to the San Diego airport and the worst customer service. They fail to realize that it’s not about the money; it’s about customer service and being played by management.

Travelocity!!!

from contactme99
Found a good rate of $75/night for two nights, July 29-30 (Fri-Sat), through Yahoo Travel whose booking partner is Travelocity. After a horrendous drive due to very heavy traffic (took us five hours to travel from LA to San Diego), we were told upon check-in that the hotel was fully booked and that we had NO reservation! The hotel informed us that it has not authorized Yahoo nor Travelocity to use the hotel's inventory since the hotel uses only Orbitz and Expedia as partners and does not do business with either Yahoo or Travelocity. Not only did we have to worry about where to sleep (every hotel we called was fully booked), the credit card charges for a non-existent reservation by Yahoo/Travelocity kept us extremely anxious. Fortunately, as the hotel staff was helping us sort things out with Yahoo Travel, one room (from a last-minute cancellation) became available, though the rate was not $75/night ("We haven't had that rate in over five years," according to the hotel); we had to pay $150/night (their cheapest rate possible). The hotel staff was very helpful: as my partner and I got settled in our room, they continued trying to track down our reservation, using the printout I gave them from my "confirmed" booking with Yahoo Travel. (Always make sure to print your online bookings!) Yahoo Travel forwarded the Super 8 Motel's call to Travelocity, which passed the call to about five people. Anyway, our reservation was finally found after 45 minutes of the call being passed around. Apparently, what happened was that some stupid agent from Travelocity's online booking center in India actually made us a reservation at the Hotel Ceci in PARIS, FRANCE for those days -- and not for $75/night but at 75 POUNDS per night (!!!) so I had to warn my credit card company about expected bogus charges. (No charges nor apologies have come from Yahoo Travel to this date.)

Anyway... about the hotel: the rooms that are okay and that have two beds are on the front (north) side of the hotel. The room we got, which faced south (the building under construction), had one double bed. It was clean (good), but aesthetically speaking, I'd give it a low 2 out of 5 stars (old and ugly). I'll give the staff 6 out of 5 stars, however. From the manager to the front desk people (especially Frank) to housekeeping, everyone was simply splendid!

Also, the location is also perfect. Tip if you're eating at Little Italy's "British Pub" Restaurant (GREAT food at afforable prices): if you're sitting at the patio area (where about 10 tables are available), inform the LONE waiter of your presence and don't wait for him/her to give you the menu (tell him/her where you're sitting, grab the menu, and give him/her your order); otherwise, you'll wait for a half hour before s/he realizes that you're around (then you'll wait another half hour for the menu to arrive, another half hour for the waiter to get your order, another half hour for your order to arrive, and another half hour for your bill to clear). We literally spent over 2 & 1/2 hours there during our first meal; it was reduced to one hour after we learned how to navigate "the system." This is a very busy retsurant and there's only ONE member of the wait staff serving people during lunch and dinner, even on the weekends.

Parking tip: if the lot in front of the hotel (north side) is full, go back around on Columbia St (west side) and right after the main building and right before the one being constructed is the hotel's other parking area (sort of 'basement parking').

Great location, great service

from netmadre
We stayed at the Super 8 Bayview for 2 nights last week. It was great! Good value and awesome location--only a few blocks from the harbor and right in Little Italy. The view from the upper hallways was wonderful. We could see the fireworks from the harbor on the 4th of July perfectly. The staff was so helpful and friendly and the service was fabulous. We were there with a family group and I will say that I would DEFINITELY pay the extra for the double queen rooms as opposed to the single queens--MUCH larger. The single queen rooms are rather small. Also, breakfast is only juice, coffee and danish so if you need more, you may want to walk the 5-6 blocks to Denny's. Get directions from front desk. It was a nice walk and didn't take much time to get there. Very interesting Denny's--it's PINK and inside an oriental restaurant. Also, be sure to try out Filippi's-- fabulous Italian food.

We had NO parking problems, as they have now opened up an underground parking lot in the adjacent building that they are working on. I 'heard' they are turning this Super 8 into a Clarion when construction is complete. Not sure if they will keep the current building and remodel or tear it down and re-build. At any rate, they have a big construction project going on next door and that is what we were told. We had no problem at all with construction noise since they didn't start working until 7 or 8 am and we were up well before that time.

This is right in the flight path for the nearby International airport, but we weren't bothered by the noise at all.

Had a great stay and would highly recommend.

Great Value!

I was recently on a business trip and stayed at the Super 8 Motel. It's not ritzy accomodations, but if you want a decent, clean room in a nice town like San Diego and not pay a whole lot for your lodging, then this is the place. Its located in a great neighborhood, Little Italy. Lots of great restaurants. Its a 10 minute walk to the downtown area, or a three minute trolley ride. The trolley is only a few blocks away. Make sure you stop by the Waterfront Bar down the street. Great place to have a brew or bloody mary with your breakfast or brunch, especially before heading to the Padres game. Attractive waitstaff, too. Make sure you tip Lindsey well.

Good Value

from Phaedra72
Just returned from a 4 night stay at this hotel. I was hoping for a room overlooking the bay, but was put on the opposite side of the hotel which in hindsight was a good thing, because construction is going on on the bayview side of the hotel.

My room was very clean, spacious and comfortable and quiet during the evenings. I spent my days exploring San Diego and only returned to the hotel to sleep. You will hear planes flying into they airport, the usually start around 6am. But it didn't bother me, and it was nice to watch them flying by the hotel.

The staff were friendly and courteous, the cleaning staff will give you extra towels without any problems, if you ask for them. They did an excellent job of cleaning my room every day.

I would recommend this hotel to people looking for basic and clean accomdations, you cannot go wrong with this property.

Parking Can Be a Headache!

from tip
We spent a week in California during late April of 2005. We found this motel on an internet site and got a rate of $59 which is excellent considering that it is downtown. The room was very clean, but parking can indeed be a headache! They have approximately 100 rooms with somewhere between 35-40 parking spaces (and that may be a very liberal estimate). In fairness, they are constructing more rooms and more parking. Upon arrival there was an "Art Show" in the Little Italy neighborhood and the adjoining streets were mobbed! There was a young man stationed in the motel lot to keep it open for patrons only, but I think that they had closed the barn door after the horse had departed! There was only one space left that was a very tight squeeze on a hill and it took me several attempts to back into it. The young man suggested that we leave the car for the night (it was only 3:30 p.m.) and that squashed our plans to go out to dinner and do some sighseeing. After checking-in we decided to take in the art show and have something to eat in Little Italy which actually was quite nice. The next morning, much to our dismay, we discovered that the parking lot was still giving us a headace as someone had scraped our rental car putting a small dent into the fender along with a foot long black mark from his/her bumper. Thankfully we were able to buy some turtle wax and buffed it out although it took twenty minutes of elbow grease.

We spent three more nights at the motel and were able to find parking each night in the lot. After a trip of two days to Anaheim, we returned for one more night before we flew home. As I said, we did have a very clean room. There is construction going on from Monday-Saturday, thus if you want to sleep late, ask for a room on the side of the building away from the construction. They have a continenatal breakfast of coffee, juice, and a very nice selection of pastries (a cut above the usual motel breakfast fare.) The clerk was fantastic and gave us directions to the trolley to Petco Park where we saw the San Diego Padres play.

The motel itself is very convenient to the harbor and Interstate 5. All in all, a decent place to stay, but until the construction is finished, be prepared to face parking headaches!

Buget with a view!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here with 3 children 7, 11, and 14, and my boyfriend. We were a bit concerned about the accomodations due to the fact that the closest parking was three blocks away. There was a street fair going on which took up all of the on street parking. This motel has about one parking space to four rooms, therefore when it's busy there is not much parking. Also the San Diego Internation Airport is near by and the planes could be a little loud if you let it bother you. But, it ended up being a great place to stay. It was very clean and had comfortable beds. The kids enoyed the pool and the hot tub. And the view of the harbor is very pretty. Little Italy is fun to walk around with some cute shops, and Filipis is a great hide-away resturant to eat at for family - don't let the line out the door worry you.

Great Location, Inexpensive and Nice People, Clean Rooms

from JJR60616
We stayed there a week in December 2004 because our son graduated USMC Basic Training at MCRD.

It was inexpensive, in a totally cool area, and was a very friendly place.

I selected this place based on the TripAdvisor comments and was not dissapointed in the least.

The rooms were a little small and basic, but clean and safe.

I saw some of the other places near it that didn't get such great reviews, and you could tell the difference.

Just make sure with the construction going on that you request a room on the opposite side.

We didn't even rent a car...the shuttle took us everywhere we needed to go. (Don't forget to tip the driver!)

You can't find a better deal for the money!

Good for the money

from marilynm4310
We stayed at the Super 8 Bayview for 5 nights recently - one before a cruise and 4 after. The thing to remember is this is a motel not a hotel. And it is an older motel.
Our room was on the the 4th floor. All rooms have outside entrances and those above the 1st floor can only be accessed with your room key to open the gate going up the stairs. We had a room with 2 queen beds - they were in good shape and fairly firm. The room also had a table and 2 chairs, a desk with mirror over it, the stand that held the TV also had 3 drawers for clothing. There was a microwave and refrigerator in the room also. The refrigerator was larger than many motels. The sink was outside of the bathroom which held the tub/shower and toilet. The room was in good condition and kept clean.
They are in the process of remodeling and adding on and so there was a fair amount of construction noise during the day, but we were out exploring so it was no big deal to us. The remodeling should be done in the summer/fall of this year.
There is a limited number of parking spaces and a small pool and hot tub in one corner of the parking lot.
In the lobby from about 6:30-8:30 a.m. you can get pastries, coffee and juice. There are no tables to eat at, but 2 couches inside and a table and chairs outside. Most people seem to take the food back to their rooms.
The staff are friendly and willing to help with any request. They have a lot of tourist information in the lobby as well as the room.
The motel also offers a shuttle service. They go to the airport, cruise terminal, train station, etc. They have one set time a day to go to and from the Zoo and Sea World. The motel is located about 4 blocks from the trolley which can easily take you downtown as well as to other locations.
There are many good Italian restaurants within walking distance.
All in all it is a good value for the money in comparison to other places in San Diego - but it is a motel not a hotel and does not offer the services of a hotel. With the money we saved by staying there we were able to do more in San Diego. If you don't plan to spend a lot of time in your room, this is a good value.

Nice Budget Hotel

from caldonna61
I stayed at the Super 8 for 7 days in January and was very pleased with the staff. Everyone from the manager to the shuttle driver were very pleasant. I was a little taken aback at the thought of no internet access and was a little disappointed with the continental breakfast (no milk/powdered substitute instead!) but the free parking was a definite plus as well as the central location to downtown, Coronado, I-5, etc. There are many restaurants and bars (the Waterfront on Kettner Blvd. is a local dive that should not be missed!) in walking distance and the trolley is only a few blocks away. You must understand that this is an absolute budget, bare-bones, no amenities motel. At this writing, the motel is undergoing construction, so please keep in mind that if you hang out during the day...it's going to be loud. However, if you're like me, coming in to shower and jump back out again for the evening, you'll find the noise level at night to be non-existent. If you're looking for a cheap hang, this might work for you.
