Construction, bait and switch too
from A TripAdvisor MemberI will try to give as objective a review as possible:
Positives: Nice size rooms with good european bath amenities. Clean. No mice/rats/roaches, although it was the winter season. Nice breakfast and turn-down service. Overall the staff are quite nice and accomodating. The location is great- very safe. Parking with in and out priveleges is $8/day. They only have about 5-6 "free" parking spots outside. The remaining are used to store construction equipment. You can use the business center with internet access for free for 15 minutes- just enough time to catch up on email.
Negatives: They were renovating the pool and jaccuzi. They didn't mention this to me although I had called numerous times in advance. We were unable to use the pool or jaccuzi during our entire stay. They kept telling us they would be ready- ofcourse they never were. No apologizes, no partial refunds. The hotel wasn't booked the entire time, but they didn't give us a direct ocean view. Only a partial view.
If everyone staying there gets the best rate (ie. 129/night) they would be forced to give out at least some of the ocean view rooms. Our shower was broken, but it took them 8 hours to send someone to repair it.
Again, no apologizes.
Overall not a bad experience, but I wouldn't stay there again given the lack of information about the renovations.
Great property
from A TripAdvisor MemberNice but beware of bait and switch
from CabowindsThis was a great hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel itself offers few amenities, but you can easily order in food and drinks from nearby restaurants. The pool area is very nice. The continental breakfast was great, and the afternoon wine and cheese was also wonderful. You could eat your breakfast or drink your wine right by the pool and enjoy the ocean views.
We stayed in 3 different rooms during our stay (2 different Junior Suites, and the Family Suite). The Family Suite was a little on the small side (2 rooms, one bathroom) considering the price. The first Junior Suite we got was on the first floor with a partial ocean view, and our view was mostly of a parking lot. The second Junior Suite was 3rd floor, full ocean view, and it was spectacular. If you book a regular room or a Junior Suite, be sure to get a 3rd floor room with a full ocean view.
I'd recommend this hotel to anyone, and am looking forward to going back there again someday!
Lovely and unpretentious
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe standard rooms without a view and possible street-level noise may not be worth the expense if you like seeing the water from a balcony to feel good on vacation.
Great Place
from A TripAdvisor MemberFell below my expectations!
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe front lobby and registeration area is the size of a normal living room. There was no bellman or a cosigner however, I did see a computer-like device whcih might be the hotel's virtual substitute.
When we got into our room, there was a voice mail message advising that we were being charged $50 for not returning each towel yesterday at the pool. Even after callling the front desk about obviously an older message for the prior quest, the hotel staff failed to remove the message until night-time.
There is no on-site restaurant or lounge. However, there is an ordinary seating arrangement for the "free" continental breakfast and the afternoon reception. The spread for the continental breakfast was very good but we missed the reception because the front desk gave us the wrong hours.
The color picture of the hotel, pool and the ocean on the websites, and in the AAA tour book, are a little deceptive in that the picture makes the hotel and the swimming pool area appear much much larger than their actual sizes.
We stayed here on the Memorial Day weekend had made the reservation for this particular hotel using an online travel service. The service had "special negotiated rate" which was about 25% lower than the regular cost. Thus the registeration staff felt obliged to assigne us to a room near the south west corner on the ground floor. This area is close to the back "alley" and we were awakened early morning from the delivery truck noise. Stating the noise as a reason, we requested a late check-out and got to stay until noon instead of 11:00 AM. At check-out, the supervisor lady asked us if everything were okay. Upon complaining about the noise, she advised us to be sure to book an"ocean front" room next time! This hotel will remain as a low choice for me.
nice but not worth the money

from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for San Diego
Forget about hotel shuttles and taxis Rent a car I was determined to find a hotel that offered shuttles to the area attractions, I'm now happy we chose differently. San Diego is easy to get around and there are many off-the-beaten-path places to explore, ie, vineyards, Torrey Pines area, area golf courses, etc. A hotel shuttle is nice but too limiting to explore such a beautiful and excitig place. I didn't have the opportunity to try the widely advertised Trolley but it seemed like a convenient option, however, we passed it many times while exploring in our rental car and it was always jam packed with people. I guess that means its a popular way to get around, but if traveling with children or possibly ederly or disabled people the trolley may be too cramped.
Everything is outdoors We went to the Prime Outlet Mall north of Pacific Beach in Carlsbad and had an enjoyable morning and evening. Our lunch at Bellefleur was delicious. That evening we went to Fashion Valley Mall and was surprised to find that even with anchors Saks, Neiman Marcus, Macys, Bloomingdales, and the mall being two levels, it was also outdoors. The climate is so mild they build their malls totally enclosed. Customer service everywhere we went was great. It must be the stress-free environment.
Tour the Midway aircraft carrier Excellent. You get your own little headset and walkman, which tells the story at each stop on the ship, so you can go at your own pace and go which ever way you want. The size of the ship is AMAZING, and we spent 4 hours touring her with realizing we had been there for 4 hours.
