Construction, bait and switch too

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Pacific Terrace from Dec 5-8. I had read all of your reviews before and called to find out particulars and request an ocean view room. There was a $129/night special, which is a great deal.

I will try to give as objective a review as possible:

Positives: Nice size rooms with good european bath amenities. Clean. No mice/rats/roaches, although it was the winter season. Nice breakfast and turn-down service. Overall the staff are quite nice and accomodating. The location is great- very safe. Parking with in and out priveleges is $8/day. They only have about 5-6 "free" parking spots outside. The remaining are used to store construction equipment. You can use the business center with internet access for free for 15 minutes- just enough time to catch up on email.

Negatives: They were renovating the pool and jaccuzi. They didn't mention this to me although I had called numerous times in advance. We were unable to use the pool or jaccuzi during our entire stay. They kept telling us they would be ready- ofcourse they never were. No apologizes, no partial refunds. The hotel wasn't booked the entire time, but they didn't give us a direct ocean view. Only a partial view.
If everyone staying there gets the best rate (ie. 129/night) they would be forced to give out at least some of the ocean view rooms. Our shower was broken, but it took them 8 hours to send someone to repair it.
Again, no apologizes.

Overall not a bad experience, but I wouldn't stay there again given the lack of information about the renovations.

Great property

I thought this was a great property. We stayed in an ocean view room and the room was awesome, great view, huge balcony & the staff was awesome. You can get good rates through www.expedia.com - I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat.

Nice but beware of bait and switch

from Cabowinds
The hotel is very nice - well kept and a lovely facility. However, they use blatant bate and switch tactics with room locations and reservations. They actually have relatively few ocean view rooms but will take your upgrade money when making a reservation and promise an ocean view. Upon check in, when you find that you did not get ocean view, they will claim that this is only a "request" and they don't have any right now, unless you are willing to pay an additional $150 per night. Take it or leave it, they keep your money and that's it.It's a scam but it works for them!

This was a great hotel

I was very impressed with this hotel. It is in the heart of the Pacific Beach area of San Diego, with easy access to anywhere in San Diego. The neighborhood was a little seedy, but the hotel property itself was very nice. The beach was GREAT for a California beach. We were there in late August, and the water was warm enough for body surfing and boogie boarding. It was also fun watching the surfers.

The hotel itself offers few amenities, but you can easily order in food and drinks from nearby restaurants. The pool area is very nice. The continental breakfast was great, and the afternoon wine and cheese was also wonderful. You could eat your breakfast or drink your wine right by the pool and enjoy the ocean views.

We stayed in 3 different rooms during our stay (2 different Junior Suites, and the Family Suite). The Family Suite was a little on the small side (2 rooms, one bathroom) considering the price. The first Junior Suite we got was on the first floor with a partial ocean view, and our view was mostly of a parking lot. The second Junior Suite was 3rd floor, full ocean view, and it was spectacular. If you book a regular room or a Junior Suite, be sure to get a 3rd floor room with a full ocean view.

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone, and am looking forward to going back there again someday!

Lovely and unpretentious

Expensive and luxurious; professional staff; clean and attractive rooms; great location for easy beach access. I called two months ahead of time and the deluxe oceanfront rooms were all booked, so we splurged on the Presidential Suite here for 1/2 our vacation and chose a budget-rate hotel for the other 1/2. Huge, gorgeous room on the third floor in the center, facing the ocean. Totally outrageous expense for we middle-class travelers since we never used the kitchen, jacuzzi tub, or huge stereo sound system. However, we totally indulged in the pool, deluxe (really!) continental breakfast, great location on beach and boardwalk for interesting people-watching. You're NOT in a La Jolla type neighborhood, but it didn't feel scummy or dangerous. There were many families at the PTI and couples of all age ranges. We gladly paid the $8.00/day parking since street parking is extremely difficult and the rental car was nice and safe. The staff was gracious and expedient with requests. In fact, I needed a doctor on a Sunday afternoon and the staff called one who came to the hotel within the hour! (The bill was high, of course, but less than the room rate :0). Overall, I would come back here to stay if I could get a deluxe oceanfront room or jr. suite.
The standard rooms without a view and possible street-level noise may not be worth the expense if you like seeing the water from a balcony to feel good on vacation.

Great Place

We were pleasantly surprised at the great service and amenities at this hotel. Every employee was eager to serve. When we asked for additional pillows, it took 2 minutes for them to bring pillows......and they brought 2 more than we requested! They had chocolates each night and when we checked out they asked if there was anything they could have done better. They had complimentary drinks each evening, complimentary breakfast, and we could hear the waves crashing on the beach as we slept. It is a ways off the freeway but we would stay again......eagerly!

Fell below my expectations!

This hotel is over-rated. It is not fancy but it is very well situated--facing the ocean. It also has at least a couple of front desk supervisors who need some lessons in customer service. This part of the town also happens to be in proximity to beach type partying crowds of the restless. The rest rooms in the hotel enterance common area were kept locked and required keys--for good reasons.

The front lobby and registeration area is the size of a normal living room. There was no bellman or a cosigner however, I did see a computer-like device whcih might be the hotel's virtual substitute.

When we got into our room, there was a voice mail message advising that we were being charged $50 for not returning each towel yesterday at the pool. Even after callling the front desk about obviously an older message for the prior quest, the hotel staff failed to remove the message until night-time.

There is no on-site restaurant or lounge. However, there is an ordinary seating arrangement for the "free" continental breakfast and the afternoon reception. The spread for the continental breakfast was very good but we missed the reception because the front desk gave us the wrong hours.

The color picture of the hotel, pool and the ocean on the websites, and in the AAA tour book, are a little deceptive in that the picture makes the hotel and the swimming pool area appear much much larger than their actual sizes.

We stayed here on the Memorial Day weekend had made the reservation for this particular hotel using an online travel service. The service had "special negotiated rate" which was about 25% lower than the regular cost. Thus the registeration staff felt obliged to assigne us to a room near the south west corner on the ground floor. This area is close to the back "alley" and we were awakened early morning from the delivery truck noise. Stating the noise as a reason, we requested a late check-out and got to stay until noon instead of 11:00 AM. At check-out, the supervisor lady asked us if everything were okay. Upon complaining about the noise, she advised us to be sure to book an"ocean front" room next time! This hotel will remain as a low choice for me.

nice but not worth the money

i stayed here on my first vaction flying solo.first off the the service was inconstant one day they are more than willing help you next they will tell you your on your own, snobby is a good way to put it but not all are like that, room where nice but they had smelly pillows and cheap toilet paper .i have stayed at nicer hotels for alot cheaper price.

Classy without a snobby attitude

from oldbokers
We just returned (6/1/03-6/7/03) from the PT. We had a jr suite room 203. This is a great place to relax. Our 4 year old enjoyed the heated pool (all of the hotel is family friendly). All of the staff were friendly. Rooms were very clean. Maid service was very fast. You can even buy sodas from the mini bar for $1.25. Secure parking in the basement. Easy walk to restaurants and shops. The staff make this place. Expect clean rooms and superior service. We would stay here again.

Thumbs up Pacific Terrace - Thumbs down Pacific Beach area

from A TripAdvisor Member
Classy, but not snobby! Impeccable service, wonderful breakfast, great views! My only caveat, I was not aware that Pacific Beach was a college party town type beach. I was looking for a more family-oriented type town in which to stay, with picturesque shops along the shoreline. What's around the beach at PB is mostly bars and restaurants, catering to the party scene. When simply looking for a place for us to get ice cream, all we found was a grungey little place that was so dirty I would never eat there. We drove all the way to La Jolla just for ice cream! And I am not a rich, snobby, nothing is good enough for me type!!! Although the Pacific Terrace exceeded all my expectations, the beach area did not. My next beach vacation will be a family oriented place. But... if your heart is set on San Diego, Pacific Beach, this is the place. The pool was great, hot tub great. I have not a single complaint about the property. It was fabulous!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Forget about hotel shuttles and taxis Rent a car I was determined to find a hotel that offered shuttles to the area attractions, I'm now happy we chose differently. San Diego is easy to get around and there are many off-the-beaten-path places to explore, ie, vineyards, Torrey Pines area, area golf courses, etc. A hotel shuttle is nice but too limiting to explore such a beautiful and excitig place. I didn't have the opportunity to try the widely advertised Trolley but it seemed like a convenient option, however, we passed it many times while exploring in our rental car and it was always jam packed with people. I guess that means its a popular way to get around, but if traveling with children or possibly ederly or disabled people the trolley may be too cramped.

Everything is outdoors We went to the Prime Outlet Mall north of Pacific Beach in Carlsbad and had an enjoyable morning and evening. Our lunch at Bellefleur was delicious. That evening we went to Fashion Valley Mall and was surprised to find that even with anchors Saks, Neiman Marcus, Macys, Bloomingdales, and the mall being two levels, it was also outdoors. The climate is so mild they build their malls totally enclosed. Customer service everywhere we went was great. It must be the stress-free environment.

Tour the Midway aircraft carrier Excellent. You get your own little headset and walkman, which tells the story at each stop on the ship, so you can go at your own pace and go which ever way you want. The size of the ship is AMAZING, and we spent 4 hours touring her with realizing we had been there for 4 hours.
