Mixed feelings

from A TripAdvisor Member
Well, we just came back from a 2 week stay at Ocean Villa. Heres the scoop:

- great location near Sea World, we were on the second floor with a balcony.
- beds were comfortable and price was ok at $64 a night (with entertainment card)
- nice view beyond the dog beach
- room was dirty with dust balls on the ceiling
- bathroom had some ripped up dry wall, kitchen not too nice but worked.
- towels were not too clean
- the planes flying overhead were a bit noisy
- for 25 minutes of long distance calls was charged $52.00. No warning of that and the manager doesn't seem to care
- dog beach is full of ____!!!

good news - renovations on the way
bad news - we will pay for it
suggestion - go elsewhere

Horrible Experience

When I called to make a reservation the first time, I spoke to a very polite young man, named Adam, and was quoted at the AAA disc rate, and only charged a half day for the third day since my husband and I were going to be leaving about 7PM. I wasn't ready to actually make the reservation yet, so Adam told me to just call back and give all the information he gave me to whoever answered the phone.
I called back 2 days later, to make the reservation. (Yesterday.) To make a long story short, the girl, Kelly was just incredibly rude. She didn't want to give me the discounted price for the third day, she spoke poorly of Adam, she tried to charge me an extra fee for my service animal, (illegal) she was really snotty when I told her I have AAA- I don't even know why I went ahead and made the reservations. I figured, she's young, she's stuck working a Friday night, in a ----- mood, whatever. Anyway, I slept on it and today I just didn't feel good about the whole thing. I called and asked for Adam- I wanted to make sure Kelly hadn't done something screwy with my reservations- She said he wasn't there. I know she recognized my voice. I think she thought I was calling to complain about her.
About 3 hrs later, she called me back and said her manager had not approved the half day price for the third day. I told her to cancel my reservations and shred my cc info. She, in a very snotty voice said "OK," and hung up really fast.

Aggh! All this just to try and get away for a couple of days!

Save yourself the headache! Plan to stay somewhere else!!!

t quite what we expected, but tolerable

When we first pulled up we weren't sure at first that we had the right place since it looked a bit shabbier than had been advertised, but decided to not judge right off the bat. We had requested a room with an ocean view to sleep 4 adults. Although the view was just what we wanted, the room turned out to have 2 double beds instead of 2 queens as we had been told, so it was pretty cramped. One person even got accidentally shoved out of bed during the night. The other visitors and their dogs were relatively quiet (except for the first Friday and Saturday night where it was a little rowdy), but the main noise issue was the plane flights that made for some rough sleeping especially on the first night. As someone else described it, the accomodations were on par with a Super 8. Room was simple, a little dated, but sufficient. Suprised the kitchenette only had a stove and fridge and no microwave, but it worked out. Since we didn't spend much time in the room, this was ok, but we'll try somewhere else the next time we stay in S.D.

Whatever you do, don't stay here!!! I wish I would have trusted these previous negative reviews. This place is the PITS. Their website is DECEIVING - it advertises that they have 3 types of rooms, all with kitchen-type amenities. While making reservations I told attendant I had 2 very young children, but room had NO bathtub, only a shower stall! I told attendant I needed the kitchenette, but did not get one! The truth is that they only have a "few" rooms with kitchenettes. The room had no A/C either. Dark, disgusting stains on the carpeting. I spoke to desk clerk and told her we could not stay there because 2 babies needed a bath and we needed a fridge for formula, etc., but clerk was unsympathetic. We left without staying and they still CHARGED my card ($150)! I will be reporting them to BBB and anywhere else to WARN other weary travelers of their deceptive practices! There are BETTER hotels in San Diego that charge the same or less. Try Ocean Park Inn instead. They are FANTASTIC!

Happy Times!

If you like to travel with your dogs like we do, this place is fantastic. The dog beach is right outside, and the rooms have sliding glass doors going out to a shared fenced in dog-run area.

This was the most relaxed and easy trip that we have ever made with our 2 dogs because of the above reasons. Also, the staff were very friendly and accepting of our dogs, not a bit uptight. They really put us at ease. The rooms are fairly plain and utilitarian. Ours was the most basic one, but some have small kitchenettes.

Ocean Beach is nearby so it is easy to go into the downtown area there to eat or shop. There are also a few upscale restaurants nearby the Inn. We ate at one called The Bungalow and the food was great as was their wine list.

t expecting The Ritz

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading some of the reviews here I went to the Ocean Villa Inn with very low expectations. What I found was just a very nice, clean, average kind of motel. Yep, it's pretty much like any Super 8 type motel you may have stayed at with the wonderful advantage of being right behind Dog Beach and a policy that allows our big yellow lab to come on vacation with us. This place is all about location and from what I could see, it may not be The Ritz, but it is nicer than most of what is in the neighborhood. After walking around the neighborhood, my travel partner gave me the thumbs up, "You definitely picked the best place in the area." Let's face it. When you travel with a large dog you don't have a whole lot of choices.
The neighborhood is very dog friendly. We found a Dog Wash just 3 blocks in one direction and an outside patio restaurant (DayBreak) that is dog friendly just 2 blocks in the other direction.
My boy is sound asleep, snoring, at my feet right now. He's exhausted from having so much fun running with the other dogs on Dog Beach.
I'm glad I trusted my instincts and didn't put too much stock in some of the negative reviews. I'm kind of a silver lining kind of guy anyway.

Will never return!

A place 'now' not to stay. We first visited the motel several years ago and it was wonderful. The staff did everything they could to accomodate us and our two small dogs.... even got color pictures of us and our pets to take home. We, of course, stayed there many times and told all our friends about it. We constantly saw the place change on every visit for the better. Our first visit this year was the start of a downward spiral.... new management, new staff and the loss of the friendly manner guests used to get. We tried to speak to the manager and he or she (we could never find out) was never kind enough to see us, even though we were told the manager was in the office (We found out the managers office was directly behind the front desk). The place was not only unfriendly but even the guests were not the same.... many times during our stay my wife was scared to go out at night because of the caliber of guests we would run into. Never again... A good place gone down the drain.

Never again!

After looking at website decided to try hotel. After a long drive we arrived late to find the office closed. Had signs on door to go to a room. Had to wake up so-called night clerk who greeted us without a smile. After drive decided to just sleep but was awakened by jets from the airport (6:30 am) along with a dog which decided to do its duty on our patio. Told that we would have a view and were on the beach but not so, no view and beach was close to a 10 minute walk away and it was a beach that allowed dogs to run loose. Not a beach we wanted to have our kids play at. Carpet was so soiled that we were afraid of walking on it. Our kids feet turned black just playing in the room. When we asked for towels so we could take a shower (only one set of towels was provided) it took more than hour for them to bring them to us. Toliet backed up and was given a plunger to fix it ourselves. Desk clerk was rude when we asked for another room and when we asked for the manager who we saw in the office he would not come out to speak to us. Found a clean hotel at a better price just 10 minutes away which was really on the beach and very family friendly.

Great for dogs. period.

Recently got a puppy from a breeder, and now our travel plans have changed dramatically. As for a short trip from LA, we decided to stay a couple of nights in San Diego and seek all the dog friendly activities around there. Found out this motel is the only one that's right behind Dog Beach and pet friendly. Now what can you say? We booked a room immediately and never bothered looking elsewhere. It's in a pretty funky neighborhood, it's like you've been taken back to a surfer town in the fifties. Small salt box houses, There's are camper trailers all over the place, and I think a lot of people leve in them too. The room was from the 50s for sure, too. Appliances, etc... It's almost like they're keeping it that way to blend in with the neighborhood. Despite of that, the room was pretty clean, and as I noticed the floors were tiled (not carpet), I understood why they meant by pet friendly. Actually, I liked it better, because you know the floors are clean. The pools were heated, and it was a blast for our kids. Unfortunately no dogs in the pool. Well, the dog had the entire ocean to swim in. Ours is still a puppy, so she went through a lot of socializing with other dogs through her morning walk. Simply can't beat the fact that a pet friendly beach is right behind your hotel room. Some things that you don't like: Really thin walls... You can hear the person above you walk from the bed to the bathroom at 2AM. Morning calls... The first plane from San Diego airport leaves at 6:30AM and flies right above you. But hey, the dog doesn't care!!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

3rd Corner Winery & Restaurant Great romantic affordable unique atmosphere for wining and dining. Affordable. Smoked duck salad, sirloin steak, chocolate marquis and goat cheese raspberry desert were all delicious!

Sea World San Diego If you love penguins, listen closely to the 1:30 penquin talk. They ask a question from the information they've given. We answered correctly and got to go back into the penquin exhibit. We got to pet two penquins. The highlight of our trip to San Diego.
