Ruined Wedding Night

After booking our Wedding Night several months in advance. Two attempts were made to check in the day of the ceremony. Only to be told the room was not ready.Flowers and Champagne were delivered by friends,and assured by the front desk, to be put in the room. At 10:15 p.m.
following our reception, we tried to check in. Only to be told our room had been given away. No rooms, no sympathy. No help. Because our luggage was to be delivered later, we could not leave and go on to a new hotel. So we sat and waited. By this time we were so exhausted and frustrated,we just went home. No appology on behalf of the Hotel. IRREPLACEABLE!!!

Shelter Pointe was a pleasent place to stay. We were there July 18- 21, 2004. The room was cleaner than just about anywhere else we've stayed. Most would say the room was a little small, but it wasn't cramped. We had a patio. The overall appearence of the facility was classy and above average. The staff was friendly and helpful. This place, however, shares the pool with people from the marina, and got overused, especially on Sunday. (quite messy monday morning, out of character with the ambience of the place) The location is great, plenty of greenspace and walkways. Never heard a neighbor, was never disturbed. Parking was easy and convenient. But I think we lucked out, the morning we left, the city folk showed up with their jack hammers to rock the 'hood during this peak holiday time.

Good hotel - no in room internet access

We stayed in this hotel in July, 2004 and were assigned a handicapped room the first night. There was absolutely no counter space in the bathroom and the shower stall had a hand held showerhead - it doesn't work well for tall people. We finally were moved to a better room on the second floor and were much happier. We overlooked the pool and really enjoyed sitting outside watching the swimmers. The hotel also offered a water aerobics class which we attended. It was a good workout.

One of our complaints is the lack of high speed internet access in the rooms which was promised to us to be in place this summer. The hotel does have ONE computer for everyone to use and, as you might imagine, it is very busy. The front desk told us internet access in each room was supposed to be in place later this year. We'll see.

We found a card in our room telling us the complimentary robes provided would cost $49 each if we took them. We never received the robes in the first place and made sure the front desk knew that.

Our other complaint is the lack of free workout facilities. There is a private health club which charges $10 a day for hotel guests to use. We thought that was high. There is also a charge to park in the hotel lot.

This hotel is in a beautiful setting and offers lots of places to walk and enjoy the outdoors. You can watch ships go past on their way to San Diego harbor or see planes take off from the Naval Base across the harbor. That can be a little noisy at times. We discovered several restaurants we liked much better than the hotel offered - i.e.; The Red Sails (great view and good food), Brigintine (good seafood) and Point Loma Seafood. The hotel van is willing to take guests to all the attractions at no charge.

Just OK, but...

We spent two nights in mid May. Inexplicably, we were assigned a handicapped, non smoking room: not so good if one is more than 3 1/2 feet tall.
Pretty quiet and great homemade cookies at the front desk; decent location, but their parking situation is confiscatory! We parked on the street and walked the 30 meters to our room.

Nice Beds, views and pool area!

I stayed here Thanksgiving - 2001.
It doesn't matter where your room is, you have a view of either the harbor or the ocean which may predict why the rates are high. Shelter Island is a very nice tranquil spot and this hotel is right at the end - wonderful ambiance. The beds were the most comfortable I've ever slept in for a four star hotel. Liked the big comforter. Liked the pool (great for adults and lap swimming) and the grass area around it.
No complaints - the pool could do with waiter service. I'd stay there again.

OK, not great

View and location were great. Room was small for
three people. Bathroom sink area could hardily
hold a toothbrush. Fortunately we didn't spend much time in the room. My biggest complaint
was with the restaurant. AJ's. Service is slow.
Food is terrible and expensive. Do not waste your
time. After the first morning we ate somewhere
else for breakfast.

Terrible tap water smell

We stayed June 11-12 2004. The room was very nice as are the grounds. The airconditioner was poor at best and the water...ughhh! The tap water has a horrid sulfar rotten egg smell. It was stomach turning.
We had some plumbing problems which took two calls to the front desk before it was fixed. It is a nice place but a little overpriced. I would like to give it a second chance but the tap water smell was just too much.

After being out all day at the beach with my family, I came back to a room where the beds were not made, no clean towels, no toilet paper and a nasty message telling me that since I did not check out by 1 pm, they were charging me an extra day. I called the main desk and they told me I had only booked for a day, I told them the confirmation number which was a reservation for 2 days, not one and they acted like they were doing me a favor by giving me the same rate as the night before... no apology, nothing...... I do not recomend this place at all, and you can bet I will be spreading the word around town.

Lousy, bad price, small rooms, bad advertising

Booked a junior suite with a view of the San Diego Bay several months prior to Memorial Day. Arrived on 5/29 to find partial view of a dumpster and parking lot. Room was small, dark, and musty. On a positive note, the front desk was helpful in finding accommodations at a different property unrelated to Shelter Pointe. The hotel's website is misleading and basically false advertisement. I booked the room with an employee over the phone and was assured I would have a partial view of the bay. The manager claims they are changing the sale's pitch for their rooms, however many other properties are available in San Diego for similar price and better accommodations... Stay away!

Go Somewhere Else

I stayed 3 or 4 nights at this hotel in September 2003 for a convention and it was dissappointing. The pictures on the web-site are taken only from the very best angles -- if the camera moved a little to the left or the right, you would see that the overall location is not very nice. The area is very crowded. The front of the hotel overlooks a Navy base across the bay - - very unattractive. Our room at first glance was well appointed and tastefully decorated. However, there was a strong musty/moldy smell and I have a terrible sense of smell due to allergies and usually don't detect odors that other people do. The room was also cramped for two people. Our room was on the back side of the hotel and had a small patio but it was right next to a walk way so there was no privacy and we had to keep the curtains drawn whenever we were in the room. The view on this side of the hotel was not very attractive either. The service was definitely a notch below many other hotels I have stayed at. Staff were not particularly professional or friendly. I believe my rate was about $130.00 or so per night. While this is reasonable for San Diego, I cannot recommend this hotel.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

San Diego is great Explore the waterfront and get over to Coronado island. The zoo and Seaworld are nice but I just like the waterfront and Coronado beach, the best. Go after March so you are assured of sunshine

Point Loma Cafe This pace is great for breakfast and is reasonably priced. It also has one of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever been in, fantastic.

Dollar Rental Got an awesome deal with dollar rental so I would highly recommend them. The staff was great and they did not mind if we kept the car longer then we originally wanted. Also I would most def check out Old Towne San Diego and be cautious of the zoo. The zoo closes at 4pm but once you are in you have until 6pm
