Convenience with character!

We just got back home after staying at Kings Inn from 3/7/05 to 3/10/05 and enjoyed our time there. The price we found was great ($60/night) and the location was right in the middle of San Diego and close to everything.
The hotel staff were courteous and polite and saw to our needs and our room faced the pool, so there was no audible highway noise. There was, however, a loud water noise whenever the neighbors took a shower. There is plenty of parking here and easy access to your rooms.

However, security is not the best & that can't be avoided for this kind of hotel. Each night expect to get pizza ad slipped under your door by unscrupulous people that the hotel recommends you avoid...these pizza places have no address & up to a $7 delivery charge.

They have 2 restaurants on-site. One mexican, and one breakfast place (The Waffle Spot). We had breakfast there on our first morning in San Diego and it was ok...nothing to write home about. The decor was interesting at best, and the waffles were about average. The service was poor.

They have a unique pool surrounded by all the rooms and a jacuzzi. The pool hours end early at 10pm and for some reason the heated-pool was on the cold side. Stay in the jacuzzi.

If you enjoy a retro look and value your money, this is the hotel for you. When considering the price, they rate 5/5 stars.

Budget Priced Hotel with Poor Location

I stayed at the King's Inn for several nights in January 2005 as part of a business trip. I was attending a convention at the Town and Country Resort nearby, so I chose to stay at this hotel rather than pay the higher prices at the (overbooked) convention hotel.

THe hotel is located on Hotel Circle, which is a loop drive straddling I-8 flanked with hotels and not much else. The selection of restaurants, stores, and other amenities in the immediate viscinity is limited, but a large shopping complex is easily accessed by driving east on the interstate, and Old Town is easily accessed by driving to the west. The close location to the interstate makes it relatively easy to start driving to other locations in town, although traffic is still a problem. The location was very noisy, as the interstate is located across the street from the hotel.

The hotel rooms were clean and decently decorated, although it seemed that the decor could use updating. The window latches were notably flimsy. Unfortunately, the rooms are exceptionally noisy because of the close location to the highway, and the building construction does little to dampen out the noise.

The desk staff were not particularly polite or attentive. The cleaning staff inexplicably left windows open but otherwise did a good job with cleaning.

The price was particularly good for the Hotel Circle area. I made reservations in advance, and received one night free. This kept costs very low.

The hotel does contain two restaurants. One is a Mexican bar and restaurant that I did not bother looking at too closely (especially with Old Town nearby). The other is a waffle shop which incorporated bizarre drawings of cartoon characters (anthropomorphic breakfast foods wearing medieval costumes that looked like they were drawn in the 1970's) into its theme. I never felt like eating breakfast there, but it did look tempting.

Ultimately, I would recommend this hotel for a budget traveler that needs to stay on Hotel Circle. For other travelers, I would recommend looking beyond Hotel Circle for better, quieter locations.

Decent, clean, affordable, courteous

From NYC I stayed for 5 days Feb 7-12. You are on service road of Rt 8 (like all the hotels on the "circle"... convenient but not pretty). Alfredo & staff were excellent, room was immaculate. Shower leaked a little. Two restaurants in lobby were fine, again very courteous. Considering that u r saving a few bucks I would stay here again.

Way past its peak

Plus: Cost of room for 5 days.. inexpensive
Staff done a good job cleaning.
Rooms, though worn, were cleaned very good.
Grounds, spa, and pool area kept very clean.
Staff friendly and very helpful

Minus: Room and Lobby smelled musty and smelled of disinfectant
spray.
Toilet ran..I fixed it.
Tub drain slow, Hotel repaired immediately after I reported it,
however, it backed up two days after they unplugged the drain.


Resturants (2) Service good, food so-so. Waffle Spot overpriced. The Amigo Spot did not have steaks on Christmas eve.

I probably would not stay here again

Great pool area to relax around, 2 restaurants both excellent food and service. a little isolated if you do not have a car,but we found a couple of other restaurants within easy walking Distance
hotel staff very pleasent and helpful.
So impressed we are staying here over the New Year in 2004

Above average budget hotel

While this isn't a 5 star hotel...it was definitely more than adequate for our needs. The room was spotless with everything in good repair, the pool is above average and well maintained and the location, being near the intersection of several interstates, was perfect as long as you have a car. It was fun in that sort of campy kitschy way! No complaints here. Enjoy!

Nice place to stay

My kids loved the pool. It was very close to our room. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. They have a restaurant called The Waffle Stop. The waffles were so good and our waitress was the best, she had a great attitude. The rooms were average, I liked the fact that they had information about places to visit in San Diego and places to eat. This is a great place to stay if you are on a budget.

What a dump.....we were travelling around California and, unfortunately, had not done our homework for our stay in San Diego, arriving late and taking the first motel where we could find a vacancy. The first room offered to us stank - so we ended up with a suite which, inevitably, cost us twice as much - having previously stayed at the MGM Grand Las Vegas (which was CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER!! and nicer) - this was a let down and cost us dearly. Why don't any of the guide books tell you to AVOID Hotel Circle??? It is a complete mystery to me why anyone would want to holiday on the freeway...which is exactly where the Kings Inn and the Hotel Circle are. Staff were courteous here but, hey, did we feel ripped off.

Great Deal

Stayed at the Kings Inn with my younger sisters for one night during a trip to Cali. As 3 girls under 26 traveling alone, it was a safe and clean hotel. Easy to get to downtown San Diego and attractions, it's right off the freeway which was a definite plus. It's not a 5s star resort, but if you are looking for a place to stay that will provide a nice bed while you spend your day enjoy the sights of San Diego, this is perfect. And a great price. Also, the restaurant is one of the GREATEST breakfast spots we've been! And we're from Chicago, "King of Greasy Spoons", but this place was so good we ate there are first night, then left LA to eat there before we flew back to IL!!

Upon arrival, we were a little disappointed with this property. We did not call ahead for a reservation, so our experience may be due to this fact. Our room was not ready when they said it would be, and the hotel restaurant was closed. We were not given an apology or a discount coupon for our trouble. No room discounts except for AAA are taken here. The room was pricey for not having microwave, fridge or coffee maker, and two of the light fixtures did not work. Since our room still wasn't ready after an hour, they switched us to a lower floor room. Right next to the stairs. Words of advice...never ever stay in a room next to the stairs or the ice machine. Kids bounced a basketball outside our room until close to midnight. I was startled by the loud plumbing when a neighbor apparently took a shower. I had to keep the AC running to drown out the noise in this family oriented hotel. The room service prices were pricey. We chose to eat our meals next door at the Travelodge. Albie's and Adams restaurants were excellent there. Parking was inadequate at Kings Inn. We got to park outside our room once. One man staying a couple doors down had traffic coming to his room at all hours of the day and night. Not sure what he was doing. Overall, the staff was nice and probably would have chased the basketball kids away if I wanted them to. If you don't plan to be in your room much, stay at Kings Inn.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

The Waffle and Amigo Spots Even if you are not staying at the Kings Inn, come for breakfast. Friendly service, delicious food--not a greasy spoon. Would be fun for kids; theme is based on Sir Wafflelot and he is a life-sized figure in lobby. The Amigo SPot had mariachis on Friday night and my meal was delicious. You can also find 10%-15%-off coupons on-line. Not mainstream but one of those little holes-in-the-wall that we all seem to enjoy!

Search online for rates and call the hotel to make reservations I initially call the hotel directly and ask for prices, I look online and several websites had lower rates that what the reservations department was selling the rooms, I call back and ask them if they could give me the rate that I found online and they agree to it, I save $275.00, I tought that they where going to give me the unglyest rooms because we shop arround for a lower price, but they give us great roons by the pool as we ask for.

Saving $$$$ Getting around it will be MUCH BETTER if you rent a car, cost from the airport to the hotel was over $20.00. the next day we got a car for only $17. and we got to drive all around North , South to the Border, East to Escondido an dwest to ALL the beaches.Highly recomend Balboa Park many thing to see x FREE. except the inside the museum.
