The property is nice and the view is great, but the hotel is very old. They claim to be a 4 star hotel but this is misleading, it's about 2 star property, as far as the facility also the staff is 2 - 3 start level of service staff. If you can get a room at the main building at high floor for $50 - $75 it's worth it, but more than that it's a rip-off. Enjoy your vacation! Ron.

Exceeding expectations

Stayed at Islandia for one week. Can not be more positive and complimentary. Grounds and location are spectacular. Personnel were all welcoming, pleasant and exceptionally helpful. Room was immaculate - housekeeping was top notch. Do not understand water issues on earlier reviews. Shower and faucets were perfect. Setting was quiet and tons of space for jogging and walking. Pool was newly renovated and just reopened - beautiful. New lounge in tower building is relaxing and offers informal dining along with the Islandia restaurant that sits on the water with beautiful views that include playful seals. They even created whole floors that are nonsmoking so you don't have a hint of persent or prior smokers.
No complaints whatsoever - will return and recommend to my clients!!

Extremely Pleasant Stay!

Based on the mixed reviews we had read about the Islandia, my fiance and I were curious to see for ourselves what lie in wait. We'd booked this hotel, as well as airfare & rental car, through Hotwire (highly recommended and economical, but that's another story!) for a four-night stay in mid-April 2004. Upon arrival, we were met by gorgeously-landscaped, sun-drenched grounds, everything in impeccable condition. Upon entering the main lobby, we were met by a very cheerful chap who offered to help us with our bags and pointed me toward the main desk. The smiling attendent was cheerful and professional, and we were checked in to a tenth-floor, ocean-view "tower" room in no time flat. The lobby, by the way, was beautiful and comfortable. Our room was spectacular! The view from our little balcony was breathtaking, offering world-class sunsets and picture-worthy vistas of Mission Bay and the Pacific. The breeze that floated into the room was perfect, as well. The room was large, and contained a king-size bed, TV armoire, writing desk and chair, two easy chairs, a small table, and the usual nightstands and lamps. The balcony included two patio chairs and a small table, perfect for cocktail hour! The bathroom was clean and elegeant, with real marble and fine tile flooring. No problems with amenities or anything of the sort. The little complimentary coffee maker even worked like a charm (not to be taken for granted at other places.)In short, between the typical perfect San Diego weather, the location of this hotel, the recreation opportunities of which we took advantage, and the Islandia itself, we had a memorable, satisfying visit. We will happily return to this hotel, and have already recommended it to several friends. Five Stars!

not a Hyatt quality hotel

The views are the nicest part of this Hotel --Also the location for sightseeing is good also.

BUT the rooms are very worn and the employees have a terrible attitude.
Everyday we came down with a list of things that needed to be repaired.
The shower door was not working therefore we couldn't take a shower without flooding the bathroom. The toilet ran all night long. No shower caps and 3 towels for 4 people. Because of the reviews here i called the manager of the hotel before we arrived to make sure that our room was in good working order and that's what we ended up with. I'd hate to know what we would have gotten if i didn't call ahead. I'm very disappointed that Hyatt hasn't been more aggressive in making this a better hotel, because the location is beautiful.

amazing views

This room more than meeted our expectations. The views were amazing and the service was great. They went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. The only downfall with this hotel was that they did not have bathtubs, although the shower pressure more than made up for it as did the views.

t stay at the Hyatt Islandia

We equate Hyatt Regency hotels and resorts with luxury accomodations having stayed at several Hyatt hotels in the past and being very pleased. This was not the case with the Hyatt Regency Islandia in San Diego. The parking situation was ridiculous. Too many cars, not enough spots available. In additon, hotel guests are charged an $8.00 nightly fee to park in their lot. Our room was in serious need of renovation (ceiling tiles pulled away from the wall, water stains on the wall and extremely average decor). The water in the shower and sink only ran hot water - we nearly scalded ourselves in the shower. I'm convinced the water in the toilet bowl was even hot judging form a couple of warm experiences. We ran out of t.p. and were brought a partially used roll apparently from another room. Even the kleenex were not replaced when empty. We cannot comment on the food as we never ate at the Islandia.
The hotel notebook gave no offerings as to food and prices in their restaurant. Their only casual restaurant the Baja Cafe was closed for remodeling. We requested a ocean view which turned out to be a view of a small bay with salt water. Overall the place was a big disapointment.

Some good, some bad

My husband and I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hyatt Islandia. We had a package deal from Expedia, but we figured the hotel costs were not all that inexpensive. From reading reviews at tripadvisor, we knew to ask for a Tower room at this hotel. When we first arrived they were going to put us in the "motel" area on the first floor. That was an area that had been complained about on trip advisor, so I was happy to know to steer away from those rooms. And, I believe, that staying in the Tower is all around your best bet. The only king bed room available was smoking. They allowed us to check it out and it really would have been unacceptable. They, then, said we could have a room with two queen beds and we went with that because the view over the bay was beautiful. And, that was really the best part of staying at the Islandia. The views over the bay are striking and I would urge people to try for a room with this view. They have little patios outside each room that you can sit and relax. The grounds of the hotel are very pretty, nicely landscaped. The pool area was very nice.
Our room was standard, nothing fancy, but it was clean and neat. It was quiet at night. We were on the 7th floor. Some of the rooms in the motel area were right on the parking lot and might get noisy. The self parking was $8.00 per night and it was a nightmare. The spots were so tiny and at times we had a very difficult time getting into the car and we are thin people!!! There was renovation going on for their restaurants, but we ate breakfast the first morning at the Islandia Grill, which was still open. It was one of the worst breakfasts we've ever had. We opted for the buffet at 12.95 each. The eggs were cold and rubbery, the french toast was cold, the coffee was cold. We did not eat at the restaurant again. Overall the staff was friendly, helpful, and pleasant. I liked the location. There are walking paths around the bay from the hotel and we found this relaxing and pleasant. I believe you could also rent bikes and kayaks. They also had fishing boat excursions. We did not go to Sea World, but it was within walking distance. All the things we did in SD were within an easy drive from the Islandia. We did have one problem with the room. Our cold water in the bathroom was consistently running hot water. We complained once and they attempted to fix it, but the problem continued. We did not complain again as we did not want to be moved if they couldn't fix it.
We told them about the problem upon checking out and they said they would look into it. Overall, I believe the location saves this somewhat older, dated hotel. If I could get a great deal on a room rate, I would stay here again. But for a "Hyatt", I think I expected something a little fancier.

Got a great price on Priceline. Hotel was quite nice but a bit dated looking. Overall our room was fine and the bed was comfortable. Biggest complaint was the Islandia Grill restaurant at the hotel. Got food poisoning after eating there.

I had an excellent stay at the Hyatt. We were put on the 15th floor of the main tower with a beautiful view. The staff at the hotel was ALWAYS courteous and friendly. The location of the hotel was great. We walked to sea world one day, and took advantage of the running trails that go along mission bay. Downtown SD, La Jolla, Coronado and Old Town are all short drives away. The cafe where we had breakfast had very nice food and attentive waiters.From my experience there, I highly recommend this hotel. (BTW.. try and get a room in the main tower.. the Garden buildings did not look as nice)

Everything Overpriced

Rooms are overpriced for what they are. We got a room that was ground floor in overviewing the San Diego bay. Must admit not the most breathtaking view, but at night it was nice and quiet, especially sitting outside on the little patio. Bicycle rental was closed when we were there, nothing we could do, just relaxing. Must drive everywhere, as well as going to the beach. The beach was quite dirty and unimpressive. All and all, an OK hotel, but the name Hyatt caused it to be overpriced.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

City bus Get hooked up with a bus pass and transfer. The bus lines go everywhere and the bus route maps are easy to read. AND they are ON TIME! For 1.75 a ride and a transfer quite a deal from the crooked cabbies who try to get more money or who dont know or act as if they don't know their way around town- hence a longer trip-more fares!

It's your choice If I were you, pick a different hotel.

Get a GPS San Diego has a lot of highways that intersect and are rather confusing if you've never been there. Even with a GPS we found ourselves in the wrong lane at the wrong moment and ended up on a different highway. Some of them are six lanes going each direction, so I highly recommend bringing a GPS or getting your rental car with one.
