Historical Traveller Reviews of Howard Johnson San Diego Sea World Hotel

mixed review

from onvacation4
Although the rooms had been recently updated (the washroom & decor looked nice but the carpet was stained) the outside of the hotel really needs work.
Thin walls, could hear the neighbors all night.
Breakfast was okay. They had the basics plus hard boiled eggs which is always nice.
We felt that it was overpriced for what you get.
Very busy area, ice machine in a bad location-right by a busy atreet.
The staff was friendly though
Easy to get to Sea World & the Zoo.
Great little Mexican restaurant right next door!

Thank you for your review.
We have our carpets professionally washed quarterly but try our best to keep them clean between the washes. I can see we need to work on that some more and appreciate your review.
We have just completed a renovation of the exterior with new paint, walkways, parking lot, ralings and landscaping.

Yuck !!

Stayed based on other reviews

I was using TripReward points to stay in San Diego, but didn't want to use a ton. Based on other reviews on this Howard Johnson property, my daughter and I decided to give it a try. We were not going to be in the room much as we had four full days planned. It is a basic hotel, but one should know that they are not booking the Ritz. You get what you pay for. The staff was very nice. The breakfast was acceptable. Would have been nice to have a microwave in the breakfast area. I did like having the mini refrigerator and microwave in the room. I did request two times to have the light fixture at the closet fixed and it never got done. The workman did come but must not have come back as he said he would.
There is a Walgreens about three doors down that is very convenient to have. Not terribly far from Old Town. We took a cab, but those in shape might try walking one way. All in all, I don't regret staying here at all. It is exactly the "class" we were looking for on this trip. Would stay here again.

I appreciate the suggestion about a microwave in the breakfast room. I will see if we have room to accomodate one.

Went to San Diego for a wedding and originally booked at a Super 8 with the rest of the wedding party and guests- but hated it there so went across the street to Howard Johnson.
I walked in and was greeted with a smile - complete opposite from Super 8. We were quickly checked since we were to attend the wedding within a hour and half's time and the room was clean newly renovated and just plain wonderful. I was so pleased with everything there- Good job!!!!!

Nice Motel

The hotel was cleaned and was in a good location. My family and I had comfortable queen size beds. We arrived early and the room were not ready so they held our luggage. The front desk was friendly espcially the manager David. The only disapoinment I had of the place was the breakfast. By the time I arrived by 830 there were only bread bagels and cereal left to eat. I was so disappointed that I went accross the street to Einstein Bagels to get a muffin.

It was okay.

The hotel was clean and comfortable. It was quiet using the A/C despite the busy traffic outside. The staff was helpful with directions and any questions we had. The breakfast had beverages, cereal, fruit and bagels...it was average. There were busy times when one could not find a place to sit because there were only 6-7 small tables. The hotel was very close to Old Town San DIego and about 10-15 minutes from the Zoo and downtown. There were many restaurants and places to shop, but it was a highly trafficed area. The hotel was good for the price, but I think I would like to be closer to the downtown atmosphere next time.

Great Stay would definitely recommend to anyone!

My husband and I took our 3 kids to SeaWorld and stayed there 3 nights. The kids room was awesome- 1 queen bed and a bunk bed wich our kids loved. Very spacious rooms. Our king Room was newly remodeled and the decor and furniture was very nice. The only problem we had was the walls are thin. However, everyone seemed to quite down around 10 so it wasn't a big deal. The bathroom was very nice, the AC worked, the bed was great. The continental breakfast was very convenient and offered a variety of pastries, bagels, and cereals. The kids really loved the pool, they spent half their time there. The pool is a little small but we were lucky and were the only ones who really used it. The staff was also friendly and helpful in recommending places to see and dine at. Very great stay at this HoJo!

We just returned from staying 2 nights at the Howard Johnson Inn at Sea World. We were a group of 25 going down on a mission trip to Mexico. I initially was looking for a motel that provided airport shuttle service, shuttle to Sea World, and a continental breakfast - at the best rates possible. We had reservations at another motel (Days Inn Suites next door) that at the last minute raised their prices. So 3 days before arriving I was frantically telephoning around for alternative motel arrangements. All I can say is the Howard Johnson Inn was superb. The reservation people were very helpful, the desk staff (especially Dave Miller) were awesome, the rooms were big and looked to be newly renovated (and they went out of their way to help us with roll-away cots), the location was great (across the street from a variety of stores and restaurants), and they bent over backwards helping us shuttle our group where and when we wanted to travel; and the rates were reasonable. The pool is a tad small; and the breakfast is simple. I guess it depends what you want. If it is fancy lodging; this is probably not your best bet. If it is adequate lodging with excellent service at an affordable price - Howard Johnson Inn at Sea World provides this.

t stay here again

I was attending a seminar in San Diego so I thought I could save a little money from my budget staying here. The complimentary shuttle from the airport was ok but they took forever to come to pick me up. Then I get to the hotel and the room that they had for me was right next to the stairs on an inner corner area of the hotel. I didn't think it would be that bad but all night long, cars pulled up in the parking area and turned at the point where my room was. It was noisy from the cars and the people going up and down the stairs, not to mention it seemed to be a good place for loiterers to stop and hang out and talk all night long.

Next, I wanted a cab to the seminar and they said that the shuttle could take me. They neglected to let me know that I would be charged for the shuttle. Then I found out later that had I taken a cab, it would have been less expensive than the flat rate the shuttle was charging me! What a racket!!

Lastly, the area just didn't feel safe to me. I'm female and traveling alone but I usually don't feel uncomfortable or unsafe. This place however, didn't make me feel as if I could relax. The ice machine was outside in the parking lot basically and the lobby had those safety doors after 8pm (or some hour like that) in which they had to see you and buzz you in. It was not worth the cost savings to stay at this place.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

tours .I highly recommend private, VIP tours to the Zoo and Wild Life Park.

Don't miss Balboa Park Museums When you get tired of the theme parks and zoos check out Balboa Park and it's many museums. Beautiful architecture and many things to see and do with your family, friends or by yourself. Turned out to be our favorite day and wish we had spent more time there and less at the parks. Right by the San Diego zoo and easy to find. Don't miss the great IMAX movies.

When you get there From the airport, do not take a taxi if you dont have to. They will rip you off. If you ask them how much they charge, they are likely to say something like 18$ or 25$. They dont tell you until you reach your destination that those amounts are PER PERSON. Be careful if you MUST use a taxi.
