Although residents of San Diego, my wife and I stayed for our 18th anniversary. The improvements and expansion being made in downtown San Diego make the Horton Grand an excellent place to stay. If your a baseball fan or just enjoy the night life in downtown the Horton Grand provides you the ability to do all of that and more. Upon returning for the evening we were quickly reminded of why we chose to stay there. Peaceful and very romantic.

I have stayed in hotels all over the US and the Pacific. I have never stayed in a hotel that was more enjoyable and have never stayed in a cleaner better-kept hotel either.. I dream of coming back and have recommended the hotel to everyone coming to SD.

The staff is literally the worst I've ever encountered in my many travels. Downright rude and nasty. I'm paying how much a night to be treated like I'm irritating you?
The walls are PAPER thin and it sounded like people were doing jumping jacks in the room above us. Literally. We called downstairs about 3x but they obviously weren't interested or competent enough to stop the jerks above us from partying over our heads at 3AM.
Go to a Motel 8. You'll get a better night's sleep and at least get what you pay for.

Stayed here for a conference at the Convention Center.

I used the valet service to park my car. I went for a walk the next morning and saw that my car was parked ON THE STREET around the corner from the hotel. I surely did not expect to pay $20 to have my car parked in a space I could have easily done myself. WHAT A SHAM!!!!

Horton was Grand

The Horton grand was able to give us 10 rooms when we had to leave another hotel. The rooms were great. They were clean and very pretty. The people there were so helpful. Thank you Horton Grand Hotel.

Stay Far, Far Away

I stayed here for a three-day seminar and was totally disgusted with everything. The service was horrendous... the rooms were so noisy! At all hours of the night, people were running up and down the halls laughing and screaming. The walls are paper-thin. I could actually hear the person in the room next to me snoring all night. Street sweepers or garbage collectors came by every morning at 4:00 a.m. and made sleeping impossible. The A/C never worked properly and it was a HOT night in S.D. I will never stay here again and I have encouraged the people who put on the seminar to steer clear of this place!

We booked this hotel due to its convenient location near the convention center.

The morning after our first night, we sat in the restaurant of a DIFFERENT hotel (the one at the Horton couldn't seem to be bothered with acknowledging us standing there for about 15 minutes), and called about 6 different hotels, trying to get a room somewhere else.

The rooms themselves are clean and relatively comfortable, but there are serious flaws - the fireplace was a mere two feet from the end of the bed, the pull-chain toilet, while quaint, is extremely loud, there is no comfortable chair in the room to sit in (it's the bed or nothing). There are no mini-bars, and the vending machines are not on every floor.

Unfortunately, we had a street-facing room, and the construction noise made an "ideal" alarm clock for us - even though it started about 3 hours earlier than we would have liked to have been woken up.

However, this pales in comparison to the absolutely atrocious and abysmal service and staff.

Even though my fiance and I were both booked in one room, they were confused when I tried to check in. The lady who works the front desk was rude, brusque, and generally extremely unfriendly. As I mentioned, on our first day, we went down to breakfast, and there was no-one to even seat us. We stood and waited for a good 10 to 15 minutes, to no avail. One employee walked through the dining area, looked at us, and kept right on walking.

After checking out, our attempt to collect our bags from the bellboy took another good 15 minutes; we had to walk through the halls of the lobby and hotel to find someone to open the room for us. When we asked the bellboy/doorman to please call a cab, he did not even look at us while dealing with someone's car keys, and answered "the cabs are all full. They're not taking calls." If he was busy, a statement to that effect would at least have been appreciated, i.e., that while he was busy, he would have someone else call.

He refused to make the call or even acknowledge us again, which meant that we had to walk for several blocks with mutliple suitcases until we flagged down a taxi. When we asked the cab driver about the cabs not taking calls, he was extremely confused.

I understand that the hotel may not normally need that much staff, but for a YEARLY event (this was not the first year), such as a convention that had every hotel for 5 miles booked solid, perhaps they ought to consider hiring one or two extra bodies.

In short, I absolutely do not recommend this hotel. The quality of service completely undermines any charm its psuedo-Victorian veneer may offer.

Nice location. Incompetent staff.

Great location. Extremely noisy at night. Nice rooms. Horrible service and incompetent staff.

Unbeatable location...

My BF attended a Microsoft conference this week in San Diego, and we rather randomly chose a room at the Horton Grand. After reading the decidedly mixed reviews here, I was prepared for a so-so experience, but was pleasantly surprised. The Horton Grand has an odd feel about it, as if the owners can't decide if it's a sophisticated city hotel or country bumpkin lacy kinda place. Very pleasant lobby, loaded with history. As soon as we checked into our room, the front desk called to advise us we were being moved to a better room, as ours did not have air conditioning. Room 414 on the fourth floor was indeed much better, with a view over the treed courtyard, and a charming balcony with a wrought iron railing. Loved the big windows that opened, the gas fireplace and our comfy bed. No fridge, though. There didn't seem to be any breakfast at the hotel, but a couple blocks away is Ralph's, a wonderful grocery store with great take-away, and one block away is Cafe 222 with EXCELLENT breakfasts. I had one of the best dinners EVER at Candelas, a very charming sort of nouvelle-Mexican restaurant on 3rd Avenue -- try the shrimp and the halibut! The Horton is in the Gaslamp district, where you will find many interesting places to eat and drink. I took the Old Town Trolley Tour, which will give a good overview of the entire city, including Coronado, for $25.00. If you're coming to San Diego with business in mind, I would suggest you stay elsewhere, but this is a good low-key spot for a romantic get-away.

Good Location, Beautiful interior

from ConcertboyPT
I stayed at this hotel last month and was pleasantly surprised. Some of the reviews were not very complimentary, but I had no complaints. True, it is in a heavily trafficked area, so there is noise late into the evening, and early in the morning. However, it is in an EXCELLENT location, close to everything in the gaslamp district and walking distance to the trolley. The interior of the hotel is beautifully furnished with antiques and the numerous lounge areas are very nice.
Staff was coureous and provide us with everything we needed.

Look elsewhere!!!

Booked to stay there last weekend. The only good thing about this place was they let me check right back out without hassle. It was as if the front desk clerk understood very well that the Hotel stinks like cigar smoke and is in deperate need of repair. From beat up funiture in the room to water damaged floors. I paid 30% less at the Wyndam in down town and it was wonderfull.

I stayed at the Horten Grand Hotel with my wife in August 2003. It was the worst experience. We booked the room from expedia. The review make the hotel sound great but when we got there. The room was very very small, and the room so bland, and not that clean The room was not nice at all and the front desk so rude. For the cost of this hotel there are a lot of better hotels in downtown San Diego. They make it sound great about ghost and all that. What a joke if I was a ghost I would look for a better hotel to haunt. Also you will get woke up at 0530 by the trashtruck outside the bedroom window. The rooms are just plain awful. S.G.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

PETCO Park This was my first time to PETCO Park but certainly not my first time to a sporting event. I found it confusing to navigate around the park due to the Western Metal Supply Company wharehouse in left field. Its a beautiful park but hard to navigate.
