Decent hotel, close to airport, nice kids room

Be careful with the airport shuttle bus - there is also a Holiday Inn "By the Bay"

The Kids "suite" is actually just a standard size room with a wall between the two normal queen beds. However, one of the queen beds has been replaced with a set of bunk beds and a dresser with an extra TV. It worked out great for a family of four.

Great Hotel! We would stay here again

We had a great experience at this hotel, once we got over the booking problems. I had reserved a room with double beds back in January but when we arrived they had to find us a room. What was the point of booking ahead??? The first night we were in the back tower this no view, no smoking, no balcony etc. We were not happy with the room and asked if we could move to one overlooking the pool. We were told that those rooms were all booked but we should be able to get into one the next day but we had to call the front desk to arrange it even after they made a note of it in the log book. We called down the next day and were moved to another room overlooking the pool, and putting green. This room was much better with a balcony and chairs that we could sit out on. There is no charge for the use of golf clubs or paddles for the ping pong table. Even with this hotels close proximatey to the airport we did not hear the planes at all. Next trip to San Diego we would definately stay here again and we would make sure we specified which room we want ahead of time.

We were pleasantly surprised by this property! We had a Kids Suite, which was a HUGE hit w/ our boys. They loved the bunk beds, their own TV, & walled off space from the adults. I loved the microwave & refrigerator- a huge plus when traveling w/ kids. The pool & spa were average, but seemed clean & were warm. Sat night they showed a movie on a large screen by the pool & supplied popcorn- a nice break. Our room was clean & even had extra pillows. Food & service at the on-site restaurant were average. This isn't a 4star property, but it's a whole lot more than I expected from this 3star!

Good Value for the Budget-Minded

Upon entering the room, we found the room warm and humid. We turned on the A/C and it took FOREVER to cool. We decided to leave for a while to give the room time to cool. When we returned it still wasn't cool enough. Eventually, the room got comfortable. Parking was a bit difficult but hey, it was free. The pool was nice except we had to ask for the towel bin to be filled. Would we stay here again? Probably.

Reasonable Accomodation

Just come back from a four night stay. It was a typical Holiday Inn, nothing fancy, good value with AAA discount, and clean. I agree with others that a lot of people mixed up this one with HI on the Bay which is close to a lot of attrations, and offers shuttle bus to the same. However, I like this one becasue this location is a bite quiter although one needs a car to get around. While staff are helpful and friendly, they never response to my email concerning my request for storage of luggage both before the offical check in time and after I have check out because of my plane schedules although when I arrive about 12noon, my room was already ready.
The Cafe next door serves good meals and provides good services.

I stayed here for a week in October. The staff was very nice and helpful. The location is close to the bus line (if needed). Stayed in a poolside room overlooking the golf course with a nice landscaped view. Laundry facility is on the premises
The restaurant has excellent food with friendly service.
Had a great time in San Diego.

Excellent stay

Excellent stay. Meant to book into Holiday in on bay in San Diego but moved here due to misbooking after bad experience at a Days Inn. Slight problem with plumbing that was fixed immediately when mentioned. Friendly and helpful staff. Great room plus laundry facilities excellent. Pool and extras plus restuarant excellent.

Needs some work

I have some complaints regarding this hotel.

1. The water in the sink smelled like sewer.

2. The other guests slamming doors all hours of the night

3. The couple in the next room were so "excited" that our entire wall and headboard shook. Our headboard was being pushed back and forth six inches from the wall.

I will not stay here ever again

Great Location, Good Value

We were able to have a kid's suite (complimentary upgrade) for a short trip to San Diego. There was one set of bunks, a queen bed, and they permitted a rollaway. It was tight, but the kids (us, too!) enjoyed their separate area for watching kid shows, and getting to bed a little earlier than their parents. We used the Point Loma Cafe for the "kids eat free" dinner and everyone enjoyed their meal. A big plus for us was the location near the San Diego airport, the harbor, Seaport Village, the the USS Midway. We used the complimentary 24-hour service to the airport with no problems. We would stay here again.

NICE FOR KIDS

First i like to mention, that some reviews on this site mix up this H.I with another one closer to downtown. there is NO Cruise Terminal and no trolley stop at the other side of the street.

The BAYSIDE H.I is at the beginning of Shelter Island and our experience was not a bad one.This is an older property, but our room in the main building was in good shape with comfortable beds. the hotel was very busy (over labour day weekend) and the pool was really a kids' place and maybe a bit small for a property this size. bikes were available for free and our son liked the 9 hole golf and the billard table (also free of charge). front desk employees were professional and helpful, except one big guy who really seemed to live in another world. he did not hand out "kids eat free" vouchers and could not answer any question, in fact i think he did not even understand questions.

surrounding the hotel is some lower income housing and expensive homes are within walking distance. the area does not give a bad feeling.

all in all i think we could have made a worse choice and considering that san diego is an expensive place, one should have reasonable expectations.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Visit Balboa Park (Pan American Exposition site) and Coronado Hotel We were pleasantly surprised by Balboa Park and the Pan American Exposition - very nice gardens among many museums. We ate at one of the food establishments (at the Art museum) and the food was wonderful and reasonably priced. We also visited Coronado and had lunch on the patio and listened to a live band during the afternoon. The patio has easy access to the beach. The food is more expensive but well worth the visit for the ambience. We parked along the road near the Coronado Hotel which was free (parking meters on the weekends/holidays are free) and walked to the hotel. You can stroll thru the lobby and visit the gardens and then go to the shops under the hotel and out to the patio. You can't go wrong with these two tips. Tell them Larry sent you:)

mission beach Love the mission beach area. Visited my brother who lives right off the beach. I want to go back and rent an apartment for a couple of weeks and just hang out in that area. Great outdoor scene--surfing, skating, running, playing on the beach. Very nice people and tons of restaurants and bars.

USS Midway This is a must see in San Diego.
