Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Hotel

from peekoeThe hotel is located centrally and easily accessible via several of the major highways in town, a big plus! Our dealings with the staff here were pleasant, quick, to the letter and efficient.
Our first room which was designated as a non-smoking room, had not been respected by the previous guest. A call to the front desk and moments later we were given a new room on the 8'th floor. This room was our "home" for the next 4 days.
This king bed room faced north and overlooked the shopping areas of Mission Valley. It is a very nice view yet the trade-off is that you will hear traffic noise on Highway 8 and the road in front of the hotel. It depends on what you may be accustomed to hearing when trying to sleep and for us we wore 33db ear plugs each night of our stay.
The room itself: the carpet had some marks and slight wear but overall quite acceptable. No odors and it felt clean. The bathroom was equally nice. A few dark marks on the floor tiles and the grout had some cracks but nothing really to complain. The massaging showerhead is a good touch.
The TV channel selection is poor. You have: news, shopping networks, sports and one off's of children's programming, HBO (basic), TBS and a couple of Spanish broadcasts. I suppose they want to get you for in-room movies, video games or internet.
On the "Bounce Back" room package, the morning meals are included at a nominal cost above a bare basic room rate. The selection of breakfast foods is simple yet well covered from egg, bacon to hot/cold cereals, breads and fruit. The berry fruit bowl consisting of fresh blueberries, strawberries and blackberries was excellent and we had this each morning. The service each morning was good.
Parking in the above ground lot is tight and this is used for the daily meetings. If you don't mind a car/SUV parking close and the thought of door dings or scratches don't bother you, this is your lot. Otherwise, the under ground parking at $10/day for hotel guests offers better sized spaces to select from. If you have a sports car with limited ground clearance, the ramp that leads to the underground parking will remind you to ease down carefully.
This hotel has convention/ball room facilities so on weekend nights, you may encounter parties and such. This will quickly use up the underground parking so be aware of that if coming back on Saturday night. As well, the weekend attracts tourists that seem to just let the doors slam shut and bring the noise levels up a notch. Loud talking, kids running up/down the halls and so forth. When we encountered the business guests mid-week, they did not allow the doors slam shut and it was quiet in the halls.
All in all, a nice property we'd return to again for a weekday stay.
Rock Solid 3 Diamond Hotel
from Seattle_plannerMy only complaint was that the Monterey Whaling Company's
food was unimpressive.
Use the free hotel shuttle and swing over to King's Fish House in the Mission Valley Shoping Center. Their food is exquisite.
I will definitely return to this hotel.

from A TripAdvisor MemberThe pool area and grounds are very well kept. No one was in the pool because it was so chilly. Supposedly, the pool is heated, but I sure didn't get in. My daughter did though and she also used the hot tub.
The hotel rooms are a nice size, and the bathrooms are very large.
We ate breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, and we were about the only patrons in the restaurant. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The food was good also.
The hotel is very accessible - right across the street from the racetrack, close to shopping, and the beach. I would definitely stay here again.
Top Local Tips for San Diego
Quietest day at Balboa park Most things are closed on Mondays at Balboa park, this actually makes it a good day to visit because you can wander around and look at the architecture and the gardens without too many people around.
Dining in SanDiego Head to Gaslight area 5th street has two blocks of non stop restaurants. Ole Madrid has American size tapas- much too much adn only marginally Spanish. Don't eat in Mexican restuarant in the old "Old Town" fajitas are better at chains. Hit The Prado restaurant in Balboa Park nice food great atmosphere.
Will never use Hertz again! Hertz had a line around the building when we arrived to pick up our car. There were people behind the counter talking and not helping customers. After an hour in line, a rep talked us into a mini SUV, instead of a full sized car, for an additional amount per day. Turned out to be a little tiny station wagon. After lugging 5 suitcases out to the vehicle and finding it too small, we headed back to the office. There was no way that I was going to get back in that line again. Walked up to the manager to complain. He agreed that the car we had received was not in the correct size category we had upgraded to. He then switched us to a mini Suv. After we transferred our luggage to the new vehicle, we noticed that there was no key fob attached to the key. We had already spent close to 2 hours at Hertz and just wanted to get out of there. We ended up keeping the SUV, although it was very inconvenient to have to unlock the driver's side door in order to unlock any door on the vehicle.
