Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Hotel

This review is of our stay from January 12-16

The hotel is located centrally and easily accessible via several of the major highways in town, a big plus! Our dealings with the staff here were pleasant, quick, to the letter and efficient.

Our first room which was designated as a non-smoking room, had not been respected by the previous guest. A call to the front desk and moments later we were given a new room on the 8'th floor. This room was our "home" for the next 4 days.

This king bed room faced north and overlooked the shopping areas of Mission Valley. It is a very nice view yet the trade-off is that you will hear traffic noise on Highway 8 and the road in front of the hotel. It depends on what you may be accustomed to hearing when trying to sleep and for us we wore 33db ear plugs each night of our stay.

The room itself: the carpet had some marks and slight wear but overall quite acceptable. No odors and it felt clean. The bathroom was equally nice. A few dark marks on the floor tiles and the grout had some cracks but nothing really to complain. The massaging showerhead is a good touch.

The TV channel selection is poor. You have: news, shopping networks, sports and one off's of children's programming, HBO (basic), TBS and a couple of Spanish broadcasts. I suppose they want to get you for in-room movies, video games or internet.

On the "Bounce Back" room package, the morning meals are included at a nominal cost above a bare basic room rate. The selection of breakfast foods is simple yet well covered from egg, bacon to hot/cold cereals, breads and fruit. The berry fruit bowl consisting of fresh blueberries, strawberries and blackberries was excellent and we had this each morning. The service each morning was good.

Parking in the above ground lot is tight and this is used for the daily meetings. If you don't mind a car/SUV parking close and the thought of door dings or scratches don't bother you, this is your lot. Otherwise, the under ground parking at $10/day for hotel guests offers better sized spaces to select from. If you have a sports car with limited ground clearance, the ramp that leads to the underground parking will remind you to ease down carefully.

This hotel has convention/ball room facilities so on weekend nights, you may encounter parties and such. This will quickly use up the underground parking so be aware of that if coming back on Saturday night. As well, the weekend attracts tourists that seem to just let the doors slam shut and bring the noise levels up a notch. Loud talking, kids running up/down the halls and so forth. When we encountered the business guests mid-week, they did not allow the doors slam shut and it was quiet in the halls.

All in all, a nice property we'd return to again for a weekday stay.

Rock Solid 3 Diamond Hotel

from Seattle_planner
I stayed here for two nights at the end of November as the on-site meeting manager for my company. Rooms were clean, beds comfortable, room service prompt. The catering staff were outstanding; better, in fact, than some 4 Diamond properties I've used.
My only complaint was that the Monterey Whaling Company's
food was unimpressive.
Use the free hotel shuttle and swing over to King's Fish House in the Mission Valley Shoping Center. Their food is exquisite.
I will definitely return to this hotel.

Close to Paradise

from Veritas01
Stayed here for 4 nights in conjunction with a conference being held at the Hilton. Very nice place. We stayed on the 6th floor of the high rise building. Very nice, roomy balcony off our room overlooked the property and the bay. It had two comfortable chairs and a small table. The room was large. Nicely furnished. The swimming pool is very large and nicely kept. A whirlpool and kiddie pool are nearby. It was closed the last day of our stay for health reasons (it looked immaculate) and that was a disappointment. The hotel would bus you to a neighboring hotel to use their pool but that sounded like a pain. My only other problem with this place was they charged $1.25 for a local call. I had to dial up on the internet a few times a day and that charge added up. A lot of places I stay at now offer free, unlimited local calling. This place did not. When I mentioned my disappointment about the pool and the phone charges at check out I got a shrug. The desk staff was not the most friendly bunch, though the rest of the staff in the facility was quite friendly. I was able to rent a jet ski adjacent to the property. We also rented skates and bikes there. Reasonably priced. The hotel is located in a seaside park. Beautiful location. The food served at the conference was excellent so I assume the restaurant food was good as well. Of course at an upscale resort that caters to business people be prepared to pay a premium price. The place appeared to be very kid friendly. Several families with small children were there. Nice place.

Was Perfect for me and my son!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My son and I took our very first vacation as my ex didnt "believe in vacations. sd they were a waste o money"......I was so nervous about making sure this was perfect for my 13 yr old son. The hotel was so beautiful!! I am most particular about the bathrm and they were cleaned to perfection and the lighting in the restroom for ladies to apply makeup was great!!! This hotel was perfect for our needs as it was located less than 10 mins from everythg that was important to us. We were right by 2 large malls or a Target for a "forgotten" item. And we were 5-7 mins from 6 miles of beach!!!! How wonderful was that!!! We were right by Seaworld, Gaslamp Quarters, Seaport Village (both a must see) and the Zoo. Legoland was about 30 mins away....a nice drive with beautiful scenory....and maybe 20-30 mins from Tijuana.....the highway directly in front of the hotel got you very easily wherever you could possibly want to go!!! The hotel on our first morning provided a sheet of places to go and how to get there and we used it the entire week. I told the bellman at the end of the week whoever wrote it up did it perfectly...VERY EASY to follow!!!! I would recommend this to anyone . The hotel was very clean and the pool/hottub area was relaxing. I couldn't say a bad thing about it. My son and I went for a week from July 26 thru Aug 1,2004

Hilton so-so

from HotelReviewer83
We ended up at The Hilton in Mission Valley because the one in Gaslamp was full. Although the hotel is ok - the rooms are nice, nothing special, the staff was friendly - this hotel suffers from one big disadvantage and that is its location. The immediate area around the hotel is about as uninteresting as it can be. It is right on the freeway with nothing but other (cheap) hotels/motels and car dealerships. If you want to visit San Diego, stay downtown / in the Gaslamp Quarter or in La Jolla!

Nice Property But Customer Service Needs Help

from thedfamily
We spent 5 days at the Hilton Mission Valley on a family vacation. The property was nice - good size room and very clean. The pool and spa is small, but it was not at all crowded. The food in the restaurants was okay - the Pub food was actually better than the Monterrey Whaling Company - but service was less than positive. Their customer service in general needs some improvement! The hotel promotes local area transportation. That means they go within 2 miles of the hotel and not an inch farther. Every where we wanted to go was "just outside their area." But the trolley stop is close and so is shopping and restaurants.

Excellent Hotel Choice

from Lolababy
Read the reviews for this hotel after I got a great price on Hotwire. Loved this hotel. They gave me the 2 queens and non smoking room I requested. Beds were comfortable and pillows were soft. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Would stay there again!

Needs updating

from cathdav
This Hilton needs some updating and is expensive for the value. Pool is small and fitness center is small. Rooms are a typical no frills hilton. The dining room for breakfast is very reasonable and the staff is accomodating.

Disgusting!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Rooms reeked like mildew, bathroom disgusting, and the hallway up to the rooms smelled like urine.

Nice place to stay!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and I stayed at the Hilton Del Mar for several days in the beginning of April. The hotel was very nice. We had a pool view room with a balcony -- unfortunately, it was chilly and cloudy the few days we were there. I thought it was always sunny in California!!

The pool area and grounds are very well kept. No one was in the pool because it was so chilly. Supposedly, the pool is heated, but I sure didn't get in. My daughter did though and she also used the hot tub.

The hotel rooms are a nice size, and the bathrooms are very large.

We ate breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, and we were about the only patrons in the restaurant. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The food was good also.

The hotel is very accessible - right across the street from the racetrack, close to shopping, and the beach. I would definitely stay here again.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Quietest day at Balboa park Most things are closed on Mondays at Balboa park, this actually makes it a good day to visit because you can wander around and look at the architecture and the gardens without too many people around.

Dining in SanDiego Head to Gaslight area 5th street has two blocks of non stop restaurants. Ole Madrid has American size tapas- much too much adn only marginally Spanish. Don't eat in Mexican restuarant in the old "Old Town" fajitas are better at chains. Hit The Prado restaurant in Balboa Park nice food great atmosphere.

Will never use Hertz again! Hertz had a line around the building when we arrived to pick up our car. There were people behind the counter talking and not helping customers. After an hour in line, a rep talked us into a mini SUV, instead of a full sized car, for an additional amount per day. Turned out to be a little tiny station wagon. After lugging 5 suitcases out to the vehicle and finding it too small, we headed back to the office. There was no way that I was going to get back in that line again. Walked up to the manager to complain. He agreed that the car we had received was not in the correct size category we had upgraded to. He then switched us to a mini Suv. After we transferred our luggage to the new vehicle, we noticed that there was no key fob attached to the key. We had already spent close to 2 hours at Hertz and just wanted to get out of there. We ended up keeping the SUV, although it was very inconvenient to have to unlock the driver's side door in order to unlock any door on the vehicle.
