Avoid this Motel

from CAR09
We just completed a four day stay at this property and will not be recommending it to anyone. We will also be sending uncomplimentary letters to the motel, as well as the travel agency who booked us at this place.

The staff was extremely unfriendly, unhelpful and did not know the meaning of customer service. This is definitely not a hotel/resort but rather a motel trying to be something it is not and they overcharge on everything.

If you are expecting to utilize the shuttle, forget it. We saw it used once. We were told they offered free shuttle service to the area we were needing to visit, but once we arrived at the site we found out otherwise. The hotel recommended cab service was also inefficient.

The rooms were ok, but there is no elevator to the second floor. Carrying luggage up stairs is unheard of!

There are much better properties that should be chosen rather than staying here (especially at the rates this property is charging and the lack of customer service received). We had high expectations, and unfortunately they were completely dashed.

once bitten twice shy

we stayed at this hotel by recommendation from a friend, and although the room was clean it obviously had seen better days. the bathroom sadly needed re-newing and the reception area was very dark and dismal looking. don't bother with the security boxes they are a joke.
the name hotel for europeans means a different thing in the usa, this was definately a motel.
this hotel is good only for people who drive and don't want to walk anywhere. the roads or rather motorways (freeways) are always very busy and theres always alot of noise from them---i would not have liked to have a room at the front of the hotel as the rooms do not have double glazing.
i was glad i only had 4 nights there and should i visit san diego again i know i will not be staying at this hotel again.

We stayed here for 6 nights in August.

The location of the hotel is good - if you can withstand the Interstate (8) running past a few 100 metres away, and don't forget the construction site next door. We clocked this as we approached, and saw the 4 annex buildings. Somehow I just knew (being from England) we would be in the one at the end next to the construction site. Guess what? I was right. When I checked in the only comment they could say was - "I know we're sorry!"

The room itself was fine - well decorated and clean , but small.

Anyway before we unpacked, I checked with the Manager about working time on the site. Don't worry, they don't work weekends, and they don't start until 9am - which was fair enough for us as we will be up and about at this point going to explore the delights of San Diego.

Monday 7:15 am they started. It then took the hotel staff 5 hours of messing us about to get us moved to another room - how can a hotel not know what rooms it has available or will be coming available that day??

Most of the staff, with the exception of the Bell-hop & the woman who runs the shop are genuinely unhelpful - especially if you have a problem. Watch out for the bar tender's tongue if you're not a US citizen!!

The breakfast was poor and expensive for the choice.

All the Annex buildings have key card entry for security, however, each doorway has louvre glass panels, with 1 or 2 panes removed, through which you can place your hand (if your tall enough) and trigger the unlck sensor and thus release the door. I know America is a fairly safe place, but this seems to defeat the object.

$8 a day for car parking - if you have a car you have no option - this appeared to be everybody's favourite complaining point.

The only good thing I can say about this place (and I am being objective) is the pool is pretty good.

Apart from that I'd look for somewhere good to stay if you're visiting San Diego.

It was not bad

I stayed there four days. Before going there, I very worried about this hotel because many reviewers' comments were not so good. But when I went there, the room was clean, not so bad. I guess the hotel was recently remodeled. I could smell paint, and the wallpaper was almost new. But you might find the rust from airconditioner which had new paint. The room was spacious, and clean.

Hate the Handlery Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is in a terrible location, terrible service and terrible overall.

They say the "Fashion Mall" is across the street, which is NOT truth. It is about 3 long blocks, where you have to walk pass a golf course, before you can get to the "Fashion Mall".

The freeway is in front of the hotel, so you cannot cross the street easily, to the other establishments.

We had reserved a room, to attend a wedding at this hotel. The Handlery Hotel promised to pick us up at the airport, as stated, on the invitation. When we arrived, they had no shuttle to pick us up, because the shuttle was taking other customers to Seaworld, Old Town, etc.

Later, we met our friends at the wedding, and they said the same thing. They said the Handlery Hotel did not fulfill their promise to all of us, so they will NEVER stay at this hotel again.

One of the shuttle drivers said the Hotel is in the process of eliminating all rides to and from the airport. But we were promised the free shuttle ride, way in advance of the wedding! Many of us chose to stay at this hotel, because of the free shuttle to and from the airport, which none of us got!

The Service was bad overall. We had to wait awhile to check-in, because there was only one person in the front desk to help so many of us, in line.

There were not enough towels in the room for 3 persons. so we called Housekeeping and they gave us just 2 large bath towels, instead of a complete set, that should have been in the room, in the first place.

And we had to wait awhile, again, to get our luggage, because no one was there to help us.

Because our flight back home is so early in the morning, we wanted to settle our bill the night before. they refused to do that, because they say they have someone in the front desk, 24 hours, so we should just check out, then.

We made our room reservation way in advance. But we were given a room, very, very far in the back.

Based on everything above, we will NEVER stay at any of the Handlery Hotel again!

smelly, dark, dismassal as well hated my stay

I would urge anyone who has any expectation of quality not to stay here. The reception staff don't want to help and are inefficient and quite off hand. I didn't feel secure in my room, anyone could have got in from the balcony. The whole place is rather shoddy. It reminded me of some sort of 1930's British Holiday Camp, Butlin's Style!! It needs updating, or best of all knocking down and re-built, hopefully by another company with higher standards. Disgusting pale pink exterior, flaking paint. Plus it is in the middle of nowhere and they charge you to park your hire car (which incidentally we got from there)! Complementary transfers are almost non-existant. I would prefer to pay twice as much and stay at one of the higher quality hotels across the road. The best thing of all is there is so much to do around San Diego that you shouldn't have to tolerate too much time in this concentration camp.

musty, dank and old plus they wanted to charge for parking!

We just got back from a 2 night stay (May, 7th and 8th 2004) at this hotel after booking our rooms through Priceline. The price was great, but when we got to the hotel the staff wanted to charge us an additional 8 bucks a night to park our car in their lot. After arguing with the desk staff for a while, the manager decided to waive the parking fee.(Very decent of him). It seems ridiculous to me that the hotel wants to charge for parking when, no doubt, nearly all of their customers arrive there in a car! What do they expect us to do with our car, stuff it in our pocket or leave it on the street several miles away? What a scam and how ridiculous that they would want to treat their customers in this manner! One of the desk clerks indicated that almost all of thier customers are upset about this policy and scream at them about their charging for parking, it is the #1 complaint their customers have. I agree, it is just being greedy and stupid. When we got done with our argument about the parking, we arrived at our room that was obviously of very old construction with a recent remodel and painting in the last few years. The room smelled of mildew and there was visible mold and mildew growing in the air conditioning unit (that did not vent to the outdoors). the carpet, furniture and beds were decent. We complained to the maid about the smell and they sprayed some deodorzer in the room. The room was small, dark depressing and had no fresh air available other than opening the exterior window that had no screen. This hotel does not have a "resort" feel and was not a very pleasent place to stay. It should be rated at about 2 stars instead of whatever rating it has. I will not be staying at this old, stinky, stingy hotel again. Good luck if you are using priceline. You might get stuck with a dog like this!

Great place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed here with my son, my sister and her 2 kids in february and we had a blast. We met alot of very nice people. Our room was nice and so was the staff. Very accomodating. Took us where ever we wanted to go and provided us with info. on each location. Pool was great as well. A little noisy & early when they set up for a convention. We plan to come back next year.Highly recommend!

I enjoyed it.

A pleasant place to stay under the right circumstances. The staff is truly first-rate: well trained and courteous, they continually went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. The problem is the hotel itself. It is an old building that has recently been renovated. The furniture is all new (and tasteful), as is the wallpaper and grout in the bathroom. But the walls are quite thin, so you can easily hear noise from the neighboring room. Also, you probably want to avoid this hotel if you or someone in your party is handicapped. There is virtually no handicapped access, and there are stairs everywhere. The other thing to keep in mind is that Mission Valley, where the hotel is located, is not necessarily the best place to stay in San Diego. There are lots of hotels there, and it's not far from most of the attractions, but chances are you'll get a room with a balcony and an unimpeded view of the cars zooming up and down Interstate 8.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

San Diego Zoo and Seaworld Use the free hotel shuttle bus to take you to the Zoo and Seaworld

The Cheesecake Factory A good place to eat the Cheescake Factory is part of a chain. This one in San Diego is a great place to visit. Be prepare to wait as gets very busy on most nights. If the wait is over an hour I would suggest a quick stroll over to the mall & visit the Apple shop for a browse or to access the internet free! The portions for food are large & we felt very full, for a family of four the cost with no alcohol was around $80 not bad considering we had main courses & 3 cheescake desserts to take away. We would suggest not eating in the gaslamp quarter as it is extremely expensive compared to other options.

Baseball Though the hotel had a ticket agency we got tickets for the baseball at the Pardes stadium and they were only $20 (£10) and a great view.
