Location, location, location
from A TripAdvisor MemberSatisfactory but train noise Is an issue
from lrathomeRooms clean with free high speed internet, average for the price. Parking was about $10 in their garage. Location seemed safe but desolate at night.
Although close to the waterfront, I would recommend this as a short stay business trip property as it isn't the lovely archectual gem others seemed to believe.
Pure functionality, location, and reasonable price-- but the train WILL be an issue because the whistle sounds! I won't bore you with irrelavances like the free USA today (oh joy) or the continental breakfast and the available indoor plumbing(?!).
s The Beef?
from ferd62A-Plus!
from wahinemanWe were very impressed by this property. The room was immaculate, the service outstanding and the location A+!!! We've stayed at a number of hotels in California, Arizona and Nevada and Hampton rates #1. The little extras that were included were nice (morning Newspaper, great continental breakfast!) My wife and I were able to walk to the waterfront where there are a number of interesting attractions and drove to Seaport Village, Horton Plaza, Sea World, and Petco Park, where we saw the Padres play the Mariners. We also visited a casino at a indian reservation about 45 minutes away where my wife hit a jackpot! Believe it or not we managed to comfortably see all these places in 2 and a half days! Next time we'll visit Balboa Park & the Zoo. Hampton's location to all these attractions is absolutely ideal. As far as hotel parking, we didn't find a problem parking every night. Our room was located facing the front of the property so we didn't hear the train noise at all. Sorry if this review sounds so positive....considering some of the other reviews...but we were very, very impressed, and had a great time!
Great little hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberHad a wonderful trip!
from A TripAdvisor MemberMoral to this story ask for a room at the front and be prepared to walk. ;-)
Very Disappointed
from baileyno6We called and asked about noise. They assured us that the road noise was not bad at the back of the hotel. What they didn't say is that a train runs under your window every hour or so. It blasts its whistle to warn pedestrians, or wake up hotel guests (I'm not sure which).
The help was also loud and rude. We were assured of a ride to the convention center via the shuttle, but it was never available. We always had to walk - and the weather was wet at times.
It was not restful. We were very disappointed.
Excellent Service and Room, But Train Noise
from A TripAdvisor MemberI got in this hotel by chance as I couldn't get into Sheraton or Hilton since they were full. Given that it is relatively inexpensive hotel, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was very pleased with the service - nice staff - always willing to help, a good size well equipped room, has a swimming pool and exercise room. They also throw in free Internet and a complementary continental breakfast. In addition, hotel provides free shuttle within three miles (service came with smile, and drivers were great!). You are close to little Italy and a late night shopping at 7-11. What else can you ask for.
I think every thing about the hotel is great except for one thing on which they have no control. There is a trolley train track that runs just behind the hotel. Because every train has to cross the streets, it is required to whistle loudly several times before crossing a street to warn any (unseen) pedestrian. It means no matter how much you try - you won't be able to sleep past 6 AM because of loud whistles. That noise is so bothersome and irritating that you start wondering whether you should move out first thing in the morning.
I would suggest stay there if you can live with some sleep deprivation, and are used to getting early morning at 6 AM any way, otherwise you will get quite upset (I get up 7 AM, and I was preety irritated by the noise every day!).
Great Night spent at the Hampton!
from A TripAdvisor MemberRandy, a hotel employee, was very kind and easy to talk to. He told us what amenities the hotel offered and informed me that I was on a floor with a lot of Firemen from around the country, so if it got too loud to let him know & he would move me.
I'm pleased to say that there was no noise - almost. The room next to me had the alarm clock go off and after about 30 minutes it was obvious to me that the room was unoccupied. I didn't want to complain about it because it seemed petty but after muting the TV I knew that it would disrupt my sleep since I could hear it through the wall. I called to the front desk and spoke with Randy. He was again very polite and pleasant. He apologized & sent someone right up to turn it off. Even the train that others complain about didn't bother me & the tracks were right outside my window.
I have every intention of being a guest at this Hampton Inn again when my husband and I plan a trip to San Diego because of the professional impression that Randy left me with!
Rude staff and very nosiey
from A TripAdvisor MemberAfter we finally checked in we were told not to take our car out again because we would probably lose our parking space because the garage doesn’t accommodate all of the rooms for the hotel. Ok, so we walked. Everything is pretty close so that wasn’t a problem. The room was clean and pretty nice for the price, but the main reason we booked with that hotel is they advertised a Jacuzzi tub. This tub was barely big enough for me my legs stuck out the end and it only had a couple of jets, it was a pathetic attempt to try and charge more money for a room.
The room was VERY, VERY noisy. We heard the train going all night. In addition to the noises of the train, the train had to blow its whistle every hour when it went by.
We also had a room party going on next door to us and the entire floor seemed to be populated by teenagers that were staying there on a trip of some sort with no parental supervision and the hotel did nothing to try and stop their noise and partying.
At breakfast the next morning I was very pleasantly surprised to see the variety of food offered, but once again the rowdy teenagers swept through right before me and emptied all the food and the staff didn’t replace anything in the time I was there.
Overall this trip was very disappointing.
Top Local Tips for San Diego
Disappointed in Anthony's We had dinner at Anthony's and were very disappointed. It was noisy and the server rushed us through. We had eaten at Anthony's in Seattle and enjoyed it immensely, but the San Diego Anthony's pales by comparison, in terms of food, service & atmosphere.
Natural History and Ruess Science museums in Balboa park The museums doesn't really have a lot for young teens. They are more appropriate for younger kids (less than 13). If you have teens, I wouldn't plan a day visiting these two museums. Reconsider when purchasing the One Day Pass that they offer, unless you have younger kids. We had membership at another museum back home and they honored the card at both places so we didn't have to pay a fee. Find out before you go if you have membership at a local museum where you live.
ask the desk! There are lots of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Ask the desk; they'll give you honest recommendations.
