Stayed Twice, will do it again...

I had stayed here once before a few years back and thought it was just fine. I recently returned for two 5 night stays in October and was impressed. The lobby was quite nice and the staff was pleasant. The rooms had obviously been upgraded and there were finally more than 3 stations on the TV. The Executive Floors were quite nice, with access to another lounge. My only complaint is that self-parking is now $10/night. Good location and close to a lot of things, but you have to take a little walk to find more than 2 restaurants.

Stayed at the Doubletree over the Labor Day weekend and everything was great. Hotel staff was very friendly and extremely helpful with directions to the zoo and Sea World. I found the location of the hotel very convenient to both locations. Room seemed a little larger than your average hotel room and was very clean. They could use more lighting in the bathroom but other than that we had an excellent stay and would definitely stay here again.

Great hotel

Stayed there for a week during a conference. I would definitely stay there again. Great facilities - pool (indoor/outdoor) and gym. Nice pool lounge with "pit" type fires at night. We would sit and chat for hours just watching the fire - felt like camping. The bed was incredibly comfortable - didn't want to get up. We had problems with our bathroom door - very sticky and our toilet was quite noisy. Our neighbours had quite a few tiny ants but we didn't have any. The restaurant had great food - really enjoyed it. :)

Great Choice for San Diego

A great choice for a hotel in a convenient suburban location. This is near hotel circle, and has many shopping centers nearby, including Fashion Valley mall. It is about a 10-15 minute drive to Sea World, and perhaps 20 minutes to downtown San Diego (off-peak, of course). Also, there is a trolley stop just opposite the street that will take you right downtown so you can leave the car at the hotel, if you wish.

The hotel room itself was spotless, looked new, and is maybe slightly larger than a typical room. The bathroom was sparkling clean and even had a Toto toilet (top-of-the line). They have both an indoor and outdoor pool, and a nice-sized fitness room. The staff was very friendly and they have a concierge to help you with any needs. My only complaint was the $10 charge for parking (at least it was covered).

I thought this hotel was really nice. The room was huge and the bed was so comfortable. It was incredibly soft...I had a great night's sleep. And of course who doesn't enjoy getting a warm cookie at check-in? It's also right by Fashion Valley and all the restaurants in that area. The only things I didn't like was that we had to call and let them know that we didn't want the USA Today so we wouldn't get charged for it, and we also had to pay for parking. I wasn't as lucky as the previous reviewers. They asked us right when we checked in if we parked our car, and they charged it on our card immediately. What a bummer! We were only there from 11pm-5am, so we didn't get to enjoy any of the extras like the fitness center or the pools, or the cool firepits.

I agree that the Doubletree was missing some nice additions, such as free internet, free parking, and a minifridge/microwave in the room, but if you are just looking for a place to sleep, you'll sleep well here.

My family and I just got back from a week's vacation in San Diego from 7/20 - 7/25. The Doubletree Hotel turned out to be better than what I expected. The rooms are clean as is the entire hotel. When we got there we had to wait for our room to be ready but only for a few short minutes. The hotel is located just north of downtown (about 10-15 minute car ride) and it's easy to get to. There is a restaurant (we did not try it) in the lobby and there is both an indoor and outdoor pool that are both temperature controlled (and a littly salty) and there is an excercise room with a dry sauna as well. The hotel bar is nice and at night they turn on a few camp fire style chimneys outside the hotel which are very nice. They also have a day spa if you want a massage for about $75. They have an "Oceans Eleven" room on the 11th floor (for Gold and Platinum Hilton Honors members) which is nice with complimentary hors d'oeuvres, an "honor bar" and free continental breakfast. They give you a free USA Today each business morning and a warm cookie at check-in and at night with turn-down service (I am a Hilton Gold member so I may have received this as a special perk). There are a ton of restaurants around the hotel some of which are walking distance. There is a sports bar near the hotel too if you are looking to catch a game. There are also plenty of fast food places around as well as a Starbucks in the hotel lobby for you coffee lovers. Rack rate was $189/night but I got it for $89 / night (friends and family rate) plus about $10.00 in daily tax and it was not bad considering the location and the niceness of the hotel. The only thing that I was dissapointed in was the fact that you did not have free web access (9.99 /day) and there was no mini-fridge in the room but could get one for $20 for your entire hotel stay. We had a small infant and it was a pain getting her cold milk every night without having to pay $1.25 / cup in the hotel lobby ! The hotel website says that parking is $10 / day but I was not charged for it on my bill. In all I would definitely go back and stay at this hotel. The staff was VERY friendly especially Andrew and Stephanie who were willing to accomodate our every need. Talk to Matt in the lobby guest service if you are looking for some good bars to go to. Best part was paying under $100.00 / night for such a nice hotel with a great location. Pretty close to perfection.

Grrreat Stay!!! Grrreat Hotel!

Stayed at this hotel 6/30-7/5 2005 and loved everything about the stay.
The Hotel staff was wonderfull to us. The amenities were numerous, but the icing on the cake were the two BIG fire pots/pits near the pool. They were Grrreat. You could sit around the pool at night in comfort witha drink or a book and the fire roaring. Very classy touch.
The flooring around the entry and pool area looked to be a Quartzite material that looked great. The room was very spacious, beds very comfortable and the Location good. We were assigned a room facing the 163/8 freeways. It was a bit noisy with the sliding door open, quiet closed.
At First, we thought this location was a drawback, but BIG surprise we had a lanai (balcony) and a picturesque view of the TWO different Fireworks displays. One was from the Seaworld Area and one from the Coronado area.
All this plus free parking @ a great price using priceline 75 a night over the 4th holiday was very good. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. I fully recommend this hotel to anyone.

I stayed at this hotel after the recommendations of many on this board since that time I see there have been more postings about the hotel. This hotel is what everyone has said it was, convenient, accessible and a good value. To update somethings, the rooms are clean and the bathroom big enough for a hotel. The cable television has improved since a previous posting last year there are over 30 channels including Fox News, HGTV, ESPN2, and TV Land. Very close to trolly it made it easy to get around. Close to Food For Less and Ralphs that you can walk to get snacks, water etc.

The only minor this is the cookies and hoe they give them out. I arrived at the hotel and checked in at 9am- I really did not want to eat a warm cookie at that time by 9pm that evening when I usually enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack before bed the cookie was hard and obviously cold but otherwise I can not complain the service was good.

If you don't mind being several miles from downtown and the bay, the Doubletree Mission Valley (not to be confused with the Doubletree Club) is a good place to be if you want to retire away from the action each night. It is still a good location because the hotel is directly linked via a 2nd floor walkway to a modest-sized outdoor mall which has several restaurants including a crabhouse, a sports bar, an Applebee's, an upscale italian restaurant and Chinese and Japanese eateries. It also has a popular Barnes and Noble's bookstore and a convenient movie theatre to boot. There is also a 20-screen multiplex a three minute drive away.
Be aware that there are several large newer office buildings around the mall area as well, so it is not strictly a vacation spot, but this didn't bother us at all since the area was not overrun with business activity. Except for the physical presence of the buildings, you'd never know they were there.
If you don't want to drive to the San Diego area attractions there is a trolley directly across the street from the hotel which brings you to places like Old Town, downtown, or even the national border adjacent to Tijuana, Mexico. We took a full day trolley pass for $5 and went to downtown and San Ysidro which is on the border with Tijuana. At San Ysidro you can just walk over the pedestrian bridge into Tijuana itself or take the bus waiting there direct to the main tourist shopping area.
The hotel has a very nice lobby with a second floor balcony overlooking it. There is a nice restaurant there, a bar with some individual flat screen TVs, and a relaxing area. There is an adjacent outdoor pool with fire pits and an indoor one more suitable for lap swimming and an exercise room. The wait staff was very nice and the hotel was not crowded, which pleased us.
The room itself was good---better than a Ramada in our opinion, but not quite a Sheraton. There seemed to be two basic sizes of rooms. We had the slightly larger one and had two queens. There was no bar or fridge in the room. You have a choice of self-service parking in the convenient adjacent parking deck or valet parking---self service cost us $10 additional to the basic room rate, valet was $15. The room rate for us was $179 per night which we learned was much higher than off-season but lower than summer. We stayed the last week of June into fourth of July weekend. We liked the place a lot and would stay there again, just wish the rates were lower, when you add in the tax and parking we dropped over $200 per night.

I was on business travel, pretty impressed. The parking was good, no charge, although I did pay a corporate rate of $139. The room service was good and quick. Staff was very friendly. You can walk to the restaurants and the bookstore - very safe. Good location if you are going to sporting events at Qualcomm. Would definitely go again for business travel or personal.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Using the trolley The ticket machines are not very user friendly. it's easier and cheaper to just punch in all day pass (it costs 5 bucks a person) to avoid having to figure out destination pricing. You can ride the trolley all day and even transfer to the buses with it, no fuss.

Use the public transportation trolley, buses You really get to know a city when you use its public transportation system.. and besides that no driection hassels, parking hassels. This town has a great transportation system!! From our hotel in Hazard Center, and any hotel on the trolley route you can get everywhere! IWe did not have a car, and used the public transportation Trolley, and bus all weekend, and easily got from this hotel to Old Town for great Mexican atmosphere, , the Harbor for the Harbor tour and to visit the USS Midway floating museum, Gaslamp area, San Ysidro/Tijuana border ( I wanted to see the border-town), and a bus that traversed the whole Island of Cornado, and let us off by the beautiful del Coronado hotel. Total transportation costs for 2 days: $18.00 for 2 people!! We chose to take a cab to the airport, but a bus would have gotten us there too.

Trolley The trolley will take you just about everywhere you need to go. When traveling to the Padres game, traffic was stopped on the freeway and side streets. We were able to take the trolley to the game and leave traffic and parking worries behind.
