Busy hotel, but liked it

We loved this hotel. Especially the cookies that you get when you check-in. This hotel is busy!!! I do agree that things are a little unorganized at this place. We were driving from L.A. and were trying to book a hotel in San Diego over the phone. We were using a Hotel Coupon Guide book, which advertises special prices for walk-ins. We called the Double-Tree directly and they gave us a quote which was higher than what was advertised ion the Hotel Coupion Guide book, because they were close to capacity. So we called other hotels in Hotel Circle, they were full but were able to check on other hotels in the area, they told us there was availability at the Double-Tree and quoted us a lower price than the Double-Tree itself....which seemed a little strange, but we took it, and when we got there they did not have our reservation on file. Apparently when the reservation was made through the other hotels it was sent over via e-mail, which they did not check, meaning they did not have our reservation. Luckily they had a few rooms available. We ended up extending out stay for 2 additional nights. My advice is check a few sources for pricing to find the lowest price for this hotel.

Customer Service needs Upgrading

Stayed here five nights on business in mid July'04. The positives first: the beds were comfortable, the TV had HBO, the decor was nice.

The negatives: The restaurant was being renovated so we were informed (via a note in the elevator) that there was no food available on site. However, the next day we noticed that there was some sort of breakfast buffet. We had to go to work so we asked about it when we returned that evening. We were told that it was free since there was no hotel restaurant. It would have been nice to have been informed of that when we checked in. OK, so we planned to have the buffet in subsequent mornings before heading out. On the last day, however, there was no food. There was again a note posted in the elevator saying that the restaurant was now back in business so there would be no buffet. This upset us because we had budgeted just enough time to grab something at the buffet before going to the airport. We did not have time to go the restaurant. This could have been remedied by letting patrons know the situation THE NIGHT BEFORE. And putting notes in the elevator is just not adequate. The front desk should be telling people. Also, they should take the time to make a flyer and put it under the door. This caused a lot of bad feelings with my co-workers and me.

Another negative had to do with housekeeping. A couple of days into the stay, we noticed that there were not the number of towels that there should have been. We phone the front desk and were told it would be taken care of. When we returned to the room the towels look like they had been DUMPED on the bathroom counter. They were not even put in the towel racks. Another thing was that towards the end of the stay, one of the toilet paper holders was empty and not replaced. Granted, there was another one, but to me it showed lack of attention to details. Our coworker down the hall found a pair of underwear in the closet....not his!

Another thing: when we asked for information on getting a taxi, the desk staff seemed scattered and confused. They finally rounded up a bellman who was somewhat helpful. You would think in a city like San Diego that the staff would be more knowledgable.

This place seems to have the potential to be a really nice hotel but not the way it was run when we were there.

I would stay somewhere else next time.

We did not have a booking for this hotel and arrived at 11 am - we were given a great clean room overlooking the pool. the hotel was spotless the staff were friendly and the hotel was in a great location off the freeway - 5 minutes to sea world and about 20 minutes to the zoo you are also about 15 minutes away from mission bay etc and coronado which is lovely.
the hotel food was ok in quality and price.
the pool was a good size and clean towels were alway available for use. overall a great hotel.

Honest Review--Worst in Mission Valley

I have stayed in many doubletree hotels. This is by far and away the worst one out there. The rooms are not that clean. It is noisy as anything as it is right on the highway and the staff is as close to incompetant as is possible. Generally this is due to the General Manager of a property, whom I ran into while I was there. When I asked him about certain problems I had he was not only rude but seemed not to care at all. I should only hope those who are planning a trip to san diego read this review, and if you really want to stay at a Doubletree, stay at the one across the street on Hazard Drive.

Double Tree Club Perfect for kids

The Double Tree Club hotel was pefectly located for all the kid places (Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Legoland, SeaWorld) and the airport. Granted there is nothing there but a big hotel strip, kind of ugly at best, but your freeway access to all the spots and to/from airport is excellent. I traveled alone with two young kids and managed to get to all the attractions with never once getting lost. Also, fit in Old Town (very close to the hotel) and La Jolla on the way back from Legoland. And all of this in just four days! The hotel has a great breakfast buffet for the kids at $4.95, parking is free, the rooms are big, much bigger than a brand new resort hotel we stayed in in Maui. Kids were swimming in the pool every evening. Most of the staff is pretty young (looked like they were barely out of high school) so not terribly knowledgable but freindly and attentive. The linens, fixtures, tiling, etc in the rooms definitely show signs of age, but all was clean.
If you are on a budget and doing the kid thing, not looking for a glamorous hotel, this is a great place to stay.

Noise,noise,and noise.

haveing stayed at the Doubletree in El Segundo.LAX.(and had a great time) we thought we would stay at the Doubletree in Hotel circle.first thing to say is if your looking to stay on a quite hotel on hotel circle this is hard due to the freeway. I found it hard to find a room which was quite.!!!. I asked too see a few rooms on check in. if you are anywhere near the front you get BAD traffic noise. if you stay in the back you are near the ICE MAKER machines in the corridors which make noise constantly (these are on every floor) if you ask to be on a high floor because of the traffic you get the noise from the hotels Air conditioning on the roof.So if like me noise drives you crazy. STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. if this is not a problem. then this Hotel is in a good location. Rooms are average but large.pool, and public places are nice, but I think the rooms could be updated (not up to usual doubletree standards)..washing maching & dryer available (small charge). to top it all on our last night (stayed 4). we went to bed at 11. after getting to sleep (trying not to hear the traffic, ice machines & air conditioner on the roof) we were woken up by a workmen drilling at 12.30am !!!!!. I called reception and was told they would stop the noise. at 1.30 it started again !!!!. by this time we were MAD !!!. and finally got back to sleep at 4.30. I complained next morning and was given a free night. but that was not the point. Would I stay there again ??????. no, I don't think so.......only if I get hard of hearing.....

We chose this hotel after our "usual" hotel in San Diego was booked. Not a great choice. The frige didn't work, the A/c left our suite hot in one room cold in the other, the sleeper sofa was a joke, we ended up putting the sofa matress on the floor because it was so uncomfortable. Staff was very nice though. All requests were handled promptly and parking was free in the garage, which is a plus for San Diego. The pool area was clean and open til 11pm. The cafe downstairs was clean and we thought the food was great, although a little pricey. It was okay, but I would try someplace new before staying here again.

We stayed there the weekend of April 9-12, 2004. We were throughly impressed with the property and I couldn't disagree more with the previous two reviews, they must have been staying at a different hotel than us.

We had a spacious one bedroom corner suite. Everything worked and the room was immaculate. The staff was very efficient and friendly. You cannot beat the wonderful value here.

You do need a car if you stay there because the only thing within walking distance was a 24hr mini mart. With a car it is in close proximity to everything, shopping, a zillion restaurants, and right off the freeway (we had a room right next to the freeway and the noise wasn't a problem at all).

I have zero complaints. Mind you I am the type of traveler that expects the best and will complain if anything is wrong. I am used to staying at premium properties: Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Halekulani in Hawaii, etc. We visit San Diego frequently and we have decided that this is the place we will always stay.

I read all the reviews before coming to this place and tried to keep an open mind. My husband's company had a conference and they were paying for the room so we couldn't stay anywhere else. The location of the hotel is great. However, all of the hotels in the hotel circle location have a great location. We had an ok check-in experience. Some of the reviews complained about the parking and I fully agree. We have a small car and to manuever through the lot was very difficult. The room was funky. We were on the second floor right near the elevator. (There were no other rooms as there was a junior high marching band competition and they were sold out.) The carpet in the second floor lobby was torn and old. When we got in the room, the sink was broken and both phones did not work. There were also a limited number of power outlets so finding a spot to charge my phone was difficult. One of the lamps was also broken. (The swich to turn it on had been broken off.) We tried to call down to get this stuff repaired but our phones didn't work so we walked down and the girl took our information and nothing was fixed until the evening before we checked out which was two days later! There are many other hotels in the area which seem much nicer such as Marriott and Holiday Inn. If you are in it for the Hilton Honors Points, I still say this place is a don't.

I arrived after ten p.m., looking for the valet or just someone to greet me as I arrived.

The person a the front wasn't very friendly and was not wearing a name badge. So I really didn't think he worked there. He put me in a room that smelled like body waste and it was very noisy.

The next morning, I demanded a different room, so they upgraded me to a suite.

There was no room service and you have to park your on car behind the hotel, which was scary.

I will never, ever, ever stay at this hotel again!!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Only One Mile Take a ride 1 mile to Old Town and eat at Guadalarjas! There is a great Wine Cabana in Old Town as well.

What has happened to the zoo? The "legendary" San Diego zoo - what a joke! It's unnecessarily huge, extravagantly expensive, and where were all the animals - out for cleaning? We walked and walked and walked from one empty cage to the next, occasionally spotting a napping animal hiding way in the back under some leaves. We paid $100 for tickets to see vast amounts of "animals off exibit" signs? The tram takes FOREVER to get on, and doesn't last very long. The bus ride is nice, but when there aren't that many animals to see... The food is insanely expensive. I never appreciated my own zoo in Albuquerque so much. I think we may have more animals, at least that you can actually see, and you can get around ours on foot in one day and see everything. That may not appeal to everyone, but my feet really appreciate that! Plus, we don't go bankrupt from one day's worth of entertainment. In San Diego, go see Balboa Park instead- it's stunning!

USS Midway Good walking shoes, take your time and see the entire ship it is amazing and well worth the time
