The check in was very quick and we were pleased with the spacious and clean room. We have a very well behaved dog with us and we were probably in a dog section, but I really have no complaints. Went to the cafe twice for breakfast and one dinner- both were much better than average and the service was good. Would recommend this convenient location in San Diego!

Our favorite Hotel in San Diego

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is usually our favorite Hotel to stay when we spend the weekend in San Diego. It's not too expensive and the rooms and the views are nice.
The staff is not too swift. We asked for non-smoking and when we got to the room, it was obviously a smoking room and the room next door had a dog constantly barking! I called the desk and after a 15 min wait, got a new room. I like the atmosphere of the place and it seems kick back.
There is usually some convention thing going on, so Saturday night has it's share of tipsy gents wandering around.

Rude Staff and Invasion of Privacy

from ketagyrl
I decided to stay at this hotel after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and was very pleasantly surprised by the nice accomodations. The room was much larger than I expected and had a balcony that overlooked the pool. The bed was comfortable the there was a 27 inch TV. The bathroom was also large, with two sinks and a shower with an adjustable head.
There is no refridgerator and their toiletries are mediocre. There is only dial-up for internet access, and you have to pay 75 cents per local call for 1 hour. After staying there 3 times in the past four months, I've been increasingly disappointed by the service. At 8AM in the morning, they start mowing the lawns and begin cleaning the rooms which leads to an extremely loud environment. Housekeeping does not bother to knock, instead, they open the door then yell "Housekeeping!" as early as 8:30AM. This happened to me 4 times during my last 3 night stay, once when I had just gotten out of the shower!! They do not respect any privacy at all. I complained to the front desk and they notified the head of housekeeping. I also complained directly to the general manager, Kirk, and he was unhelpful and did not seem to want to be bothered. As a guest in any hotel, I would think that privacy would be valued above all, but this hotel does not seem to care nor offer any sincere apologies. I told Kirk that I no longer planned on staying at this hotel, and he asked me, "Why not?" Obviously he did not seem to think there was anything wrong with opening the door on a guest without knocking. There are plenty of other hotels in San Diego that will be more respectful towards their customers!

Budget hotel pretending to be a resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hanalei Hotel is really a Motel-6 level facility with pretensions of being a resort-like hotel. While our room was very clean, the amenities were old and in disrepair. The TV remote did not work and even after it was replaced it always took about ten tries to get it working. The hair dryer did not work and although I reported this twice it was never replaced. The mini-fridge leaked and I had to keep several towels outside of it to keep it from spilling onto the floor. The room service food was not very good and very over-priced. The Hotel Circle location was very convenient for hopping on and off the freeway to go to various attractions -- however it would have been nice to be able to walk to or take a surface street to get to fast food, grocery and drugstore etc. The hotel had no vending machines for snacks and the only place to get candy/chips etc was the gift shop which was extremely overpriced as well. I expect this type of thing at a resort hotel, but not at a budget-level motel. If you can get a deal for $75 on a room or less and you have NO expectations other than a clean room -- go for it.
However, the ads do not give an accurate picture of the hotel.

Hawaiian Escape

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband, 8-year old daughter and I went to Hawaii last month, and of course, had an amazing time. I chose this hotel because of the Hawaiian-style decor that looked appealing over the internet. When we got there, we were pleasantly surprised at how much we felt like we were back in the Hawaiian Islands again. From the moment we walked through the doors, the service at the front desk was personable and accomodating. The decor throughout this hotel was tropical and elegant. Our room was overlooking the poolside area and since we were on the 7th floor we had a nice view. We had dinner at The Islands Restaurant inside the hotel and although the service was slow, the restaurant personnel were friendly and accomodating. As we were leaving the parking lot, my daughter asked us when could we come back again! Definitely a nice Hawaiian escape!

Poor Service and not clean!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed Three nights there. For the price we payed the survice was bad. I had to call two days in a row to get a secound coffee cup in the room. Also there was toys and food around the beds from people befor us. There where holes in the blankets. We travel around ten times a year and have stayed in several places. This one we will not return to.
We also watched a maid walk out to her car. A car had just pulled out and they had set a thermast down and forgot it. She walked over and pick it up then walked back to her car and put it in her car. How honest is that. What else would they take?

Nice for the Price

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I had stayed at the hotel for four nights and it was a pleasant stay. The room was spacious and clean and had a great balcony that overlooked the pool. The tropical landscaping on the hotel grounds was beautiful. The only complaint that we had was the air conditioning wasn't functioning properly...it took forever for it to cool the room and it didn't blow very hard. The hotel is close to the freeway so there was some noise, but it wasn't too bad. I would recomend this hotel to anyone on a budget.

Loved it!

This was a jewel of a hotel. The service from check-in to check-out was outstanding. The lush tropical sceenery made you feel like you were in paradise. Easy access to shopping & dinning made the whole vacation very pleasant. We absolutly will have to stay there whenever we return to San Diego. The hotel had so much to do there it was hard to leave to do over things & who would want to leave such a beautiful place. Hey I want to live there!!!!!!

One night stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
I just came back from my one night stay at the Red Lion Hanalei Hotel.
It was a nice/clean room on the first floor. Larger then I expected and right next to an atrium with a waterfall and Koi pond. Bathrooms were clean, bed seemed clean, and housekeeping was great! Room service not all that bad considering they were completely booked. Everyone was courteous and next time I go to SD I would def. go back to this hotel.
I loved it!

Just got back and it was great.

We just got back from San Diego and booked here based on recommendations we saw on this site. I was attending a conference downtown and needed a place for the family to stay and do day trips.
The hotel staff was constantly cleaning the grounds which were beautiful. The pool area was great. We ended up eating more meals here than intended since there were lots and choices for food and it was very convenient. You can dial room service from the pool and have your food delivered right there. The casual atmosphere and resonable prices suited our family perfectly. I would stay here again.

Probably the best deal is SD !

Nice ! Watch out 'coz the hotel is bigger than you may think. My gf and I spent there 5 nights, we got what we request : king bed, superior room (booked through Expedia) high floor. The room was quiet, pretty big and very clean. The belldesk was amazing, they really helped us out more than once when we needed to find or book something special. We had to call the manteinance guys for a couple of things and they got there in a couple of minutes !The pool and the jacuzzi are nice and open 'til 10 pm. The "glass" elevators overlooking the garden are wonderful! The hotel location is really handy, you get almost anywhere in SD in max 5/10 minutes, plus they give a leaflet with directions to the main spots. Breakfast buffet is good. I would return there anyday. (ps : the lonely planet guide is right, this is probably THE best deal is SD.)

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Coronado Beach If you've never been to San Diego and want to go to a nice beach, go to Coronado. You will not be disappointed.

Fish Burritos. They sound gross - but I was convinced and immediately addicted. They rock my world! They had some really nice ones in Old Town, but I"m sure that a local could point you to a decent place to get one.

Buy tickets at Costco If your trip includes a stop at Sea World, stop at just about any Costco in the San Diego area first. You can buy a Silver Passport for around $75 (a single day Sea World ticket is $57), which gives you admission for a year, free parking ($10 value per car), and discounts at all retailers and concessions in the park. It pays for itself the first day you use it. Costco also sells tickets for Legoland, the Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and the CityPass. Check it out!
