Historical Traveller Reviews of Courtyard San Diego Old Town Hotel

Clean, Friendly, Great Location.

from TxDoc
My expectations were really exceeded by this beautiful hotel. We stayed 3 nights July 7-9. It is in a great location just a block from all the shops and restaurants in Old Town. It is literally five minutes from the airport and just about every major attraction in San Diego which was great for us since we were there to do the tourist things. Friendly staff, clean and beautiful building and property. They have a nice breakfast buffet with indoor and outdoor dining. Pool is nice for an early afternoon dip although it gets shaded pretty early by the building. They have underground gated parking (an extra cost) which is nice. Overall I thought it was a wonderful place and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Friendly, Central. Gorgeous

We just stayed 3 nights at the Courtyard by Marriott in Old Town San Diego.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. My family members were arriving at different times and they made this very easy. The room was large and very comfortable. We had the buffet breakfast for 10.95 which included indivually made omelets, freshly made waffles, fruit, biscuits and gravy, cereals and breads. We ate out on the patio. It was a very pleasant meal.
Parking is 12.00 per day, but it is hard to find parking on the street in this busy part of the city. It was worth it. The hotel is 2 blocks away from Old Town. Strolling along the streets, seeing the old houses and churches is very pleasant. We had a fabulous meal at the Old Town Mexican Cafe. With hand made corn or flour tortillas and great chile rellanos, it was a superb Mexican restaurant. We liked it so much that we ate there twice.
I would highly recommend a stay at the Courtyard.

Old Town was great

from jercha
Wow this hotel is inches away from the I5N Hwy entrance. I was in my Mission Valley training class in less than 10 minutes. All other San Diego tourist attractions are all just off the freeway. For a whole week the freeway never backed up which added to the laid back atmosphere of San Diego.

Old Town has great food cheap to expensive. mostly Mexican style restaurants. If you want oceanfront look elsewhere. The hotel was an easy 2 block walk to restaurants and shops.. I reccomend the Baja Lobster and Old Town Cafe. Hotel Breakfast buffet is convinient but pricey @$10. I reccomend the cheap $3 breakfast Oharry acros from the Catholic church.
For a relaxing breakfast with pastries go to the Living Room cafe also acroos the church.

The shops are really cool. Prices are reasonable considering a trip to nearby Tijuana only yielded a few dollars worth of savings. The trolley tour starts 3 blocks away. The red train is about 4 blocks away. The train is a great way to go to the Mexican border if you dont feel like driving and paying parking $8. Driving back to the USA also takes hours to cross the checkpoint so I reccomend walking and taking the yellow cabbie.

Old Town is just a mile or so away from Navy facilities, Grocery, Fast Food.

My only complaint is that my room had a connecting door so I could hear the kids next door playing and watching cartoons. The hotel is next to an elementary school. If Marriott management are reading this they should help landscape the school fence across the hotel. The fence is so ugly compared to the beatiful hotel landscape.

My room was in a 1 level hacienda style section with a patio. Street parking is sufficient. Underground is $12. I prefer street if your room is near the street.

Great location; good value

Nice property; very good service. When checking in, ask for a room that doesn't face the freeway. Soundproofing is more than adequate; it's just that the view is better facing north (Old Town) as compared to south (Interstate 5).

Omelet/pancake chef at breakfast was especially talented, and especially nice; and that's saying a lot since all the employees were especially professional and good-natured.

Depending on time of year, you may be able to avoid the $12/day parking fee if you park on the street.

Once again, every employee seemed to truly care that the guests had a good visit; and did their best to make it that way.

A Nice Surprise

Very pleased with trip experience at San Diego Old Town Marriott Courtyard. The staff was very nice and friendly. Rooms clean and food was incredible for a great price. Would highly recommend.

Perfect for us!

from pegcap1
We just returned from a five day trip to San Diego and stayed in Old Town at the Courtyard Mariott. It was perfect for us. The price was right and the location terrific. I had read the reviews so asked for a room on the courtyard side and thus was not bothered by any freeway noise that others had mentioned. The location right off Interstate 5 made it perfect for our day trips to downtown San Diego, the zoo, Balboa Park, La Jolla, Seaport Village, and Coronado Island. And every night we walked into Old Town for dinner, so convenient, and we didn't have to drive anywhere at the end of the day when we were tired from sightseeing during the day. Had good food every night: Mexican, Italian, seafood. We also used the lobby and fireplace to relax and read the paper...with the fireplace on since we were there during rainy season and it was a bit nippy! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again...price and location do it for me!

We stayed for a night prior to a cruise in Jan. I booked it through priceline and it was an excellent price-it is clean, within walking distance of old town-the staff was great and they have airport pickup and shuttle to the cruise ships-would stay again even if we weren't cruising!(O:

Great Location So So Hotel

from Historiana
Just a couple of blocks from the main part of old town, this hotel has an excellent location. It is very easy on and off from I-5 and you can get anywhere very easily. However, the rooms are a bit on the lean side - my wife, eight year old daughter and I were pretty snug in the room. The hotel offers free high speed Internet but charges for local calls. Unlike many other Courtyard hotels there is no free breakfast. Parking is in two indoor lots on either side of the building at a cost of $10 per day.

A must stay

We had such a wonderful time. I was very picky about making reservations and drove my travel agent bazzerk. I read all the reviews on this hotel and thought that if people were that happy it has to be good. When we arrived the room was wrong and we had to make an adjustment, which I would have rated this hotel a 4 out of five but the staff was so quick to please it was wonderful so hense the 5. We got our room and had to ask for a frig for the baby formula and they came up with a large college dorm size which was perfect for all her formula and snacks. The hotel was imaculate and the staff, I can not say enough about the staff. Everyone greeted us with a warm smile and by our names each time. The general manager came by our table each morning to ask us how our previouse day was and suggestions of places to see and go each day. The location was also great. Walking distance to everything in Old Town (if you are tired from walking all day they will drive you anywhere you want to go). It is also next to the highway so going to other areas was quite easy. I give the staff a 5+star rating. The room was clean and everything looked new and well kept. While I wanted to stay at a resort hotel I am glad we decided not to. The hotel is not fancy like a 5 star hotel but I will say the service is just as good if not better and that made all the difference. We look forward to coming back to San Diego (which was a wonderful trip in itself) and we will deffinitely stay here again. To top it all off, a week after we arrived home we recieved a very warm thank you letter from the general manager (not a form letter). I still smile thinking about it.

Loved It!

Don't pay attention to all the haters -- this hotel is a fantastic bargain!! We stayed there for 5 nights in March 2004 and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Granted, we weren't looking for a 4-star deluxe hotel experience -- we were looking for a nice place to sleep/hang out at while we stayed in San Diego, and that is exactly what we got. We booked through a discount web site for half of the going rate, and were not treated like second class customers at all, including during our 11:30pm check-in. Yes, this place is right next to an on-ramp for I-5, but we were given a room with a pool view (opposite side from the freeway) and were never once bothered by traffic noise. We appreciated the location -- about 3 short blocks from the Old Town District and its many bars and restaurants (many with very cheap happy hour specials!). We didn't eat at the restaurant, but the bar was sufficient, as well as affordable. The lobby area was clean and comfortable, with ample space to relax in, as well as a fireplace that is probably not needed most of the year. The pool and hot tub area was very nice -- we were able to swim outdoors comfortably in mid-March, and the propane heaters in the courtyard kept us warm after we got out of the pool. All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience, and I would definitely recommend this hotel (and the Old Town neighborhood) to anyone visiting the area!
