Only good thing is location - sort of

If you're going to Petco Park, this is an ideal place to stay for proximity only - but be warned. The hotel does not have sufficient on-site parking so if you don't get a space (for which apparently you have to get there a few days before your reservation), you will be made to park, for the same rate, at an open overflow lot, right on the street, a block away. If you get a room in the front of the hotel, you'll hear every single noise, voice and car on the street below you (even from the top floor) until very late into the evening. And half your bathroom (i.e. the sink) is right next to your bed. The showerheads are nice, however -- if that's what you're going for.

Great Location

After reading some of the reviews, I was afraid to go to this hotel, but found it to be an excellent location for walking to most things. Upon arrival, I asked for a quiet room and was given Rm 410 which was quiet.
The room was small, but adequate for sleeping only. Carpet needed cleaning as our white socks were dirty from walking on it. Breakfast was ample. I would stay there again mainly because of the convenient location, and the price was right.

Will go back.

Great location for the Gaslamp District. Check in straightforward, if a little impersonal. Hotel very clean but definately no frills. Room size is adequate, just. Window air conditioner somewhat noisy, much less so than the street below our window in room 205, we were able to sleep fine though. Shower is great with good flow. Bathroom sliding door with no lock didn't bother us. It worked! Front desk not able to supply a razor or a current Visitor magazine with TV schedule. Free breakfast better than expected with waffles, two kinds of omlettes, sausage and the usual drinks and bread. The free internet in the business center and laundry machines are a real plus as is the room fridge and microwave. Parking at $14 is cheaper than other hotels in the area. We paid $426 for three nights 8/31-9/3/05, includes tax, with $52 for parking. I don't think you can do better for the area.

Never, ever again

I was happy when I was able to get an affordable room in San Diego in the summer! That is where happy ended.

Everytime we went through the front door, we were greeted by pan-handlers on the outside. "Any change mamm?" The odor outside the main door was unbearable to even the people working the front desk. It turned out to be the degreasing of the restaurant nextdoor. Oh yeah, I want to eat there!

The parking lot was tight, but then, I drive a large Suburban. The front desk did give me a spot I could get in and out of easily, but someone was illegally parked there and I was forced to take a different spot.

I had requested a room with tow doubles as I was traveling with my mother and children. When we checked in we found only a full sized bed. I was told that they didn't have any other rooms with two beds available. They volunteered blankets and sheets so the kids could sleep on the floor. Yuck!

The air in our room didn't work well and opening the window just let in the noise and smells of the outdoors. The ceiling fan was our only relief. Having our window open was scary as our view was the of the room through the courtyard! (Maybe 10 feet?)

Traffic was bad that night too as there was a Padres game at Petco Park. The restaurants nearby were packed with baseball fans trying to eat before the game!

Our bathroom door did not have a lock on it. It was merely a sliding door without a latch.

Our room was small and the bed was about a foot and a half from the sink. Not much room for brushing teeth or doing hair!

We stayed only one night and then moved to a pricey hotel on the Bay. It was a beautiful hotel in a safer neighborhood. We paid three times as much a night, but felt it was a much better deal!

I would never stay here again!

I would never stay at this place again! It was absolutely the worst hotel I have ever stayed in! I have no idea how they got rated as a two star hotel, they were worse then the motels we stayed in!

The bathroom had a sliding door that did not close unless it was pushed from the outside and was all scratched up on the inside. There is no sink inside the bathroom, just a toilet and bath! To wash your hands you had to CONVENIENTLY go into the room itself and wash your hands in the sink that was about a foot away from the bed! There was barely enough space in the room to set down two suitcases! We were constantly tripping over each other and our things! You couldn't even wash your hands or face without waking up the other person in the room.

The air conditioner was tiny and attached to the window, not only was it not very effective it kept turning off in the middle of the night! There was a nail sticking out of the chair in our room! There was also a very weird stain/burn on the carpet next to the bathroom that was the size of a large mellon. The whole time we were there the phone flashed as if we had a message...there were no messages when you checked, but it kept flashing!

The staff was not rude, but they were uttely unhelpful! They told us they were full and didn't offer to upgrades us to a bigger room even though we repeatedly asked them to. We later found out on the last day that rooms were available!

They did have a great breakfast and we got a great price on the room, but I would never stay here again! I have stayed at 3 other very nice Comfort/Quality Inns before, but this place was absolutely horrible! If you choose to say here, don't stay in room 313 (although I doubt other rooms are much better)!

I was in town for one night which just so happened to be the week of a very large convention (comic-con). When I arrived, as soon as I entered the lobby, I thought I had walked into a transient hotel. I hoped the rooms would be nicer than the lobby. Nope. Not at all. Sink next to the bed, AC hanging out of the window, blinds that don't close if you want to use the AC, and a bed that made the floor a better option.

Now if I was paying 100 for the night I could live with this dive, but at 300 for just one night, I was kind of insulted. As a frequent traveler, I stay in Comfort Inns often. The 1st chance they had to rip me off they did. And not only did I get taken for a ride on rate, I had a room not worthy of one star.

This place provided all that was needed for a < $100/night stay. The b'fast was tasty and plentiful, the room had a fridge and a micro, and the location was second to none. I'm going back to SD in 8 weeks and will be staying there again. Besides, I'd rather spend the money I saved on the nightlife and activities versus a room in which I'm really only going to sleep, shower, and shave.

Nice but Noisy

My husband and I stayed here for one night only as we were going to a Padres game at Petco Park. The hotel and room were very clean. Staff was helpful and attentive. The rooms have a microwave and refrigerator which is nice and are average in size. My husband is 6' 4" and has trouble with most hotel room showers but did like this one because of the shower head can be moved higher than regular shower heads. Parking is behind the hotel and costs $14.00 a night. It is within walking distance to Petco park (we could actually see the park from our room window), Seaport Village, Little Italy and of course the Gaslamp district. As other reviewers have mentioned they have a great free breakfast from 6:30 am to 9:30 am. There was omlettes, cereal, muffins, bagels and you can make your own waffle. The neighborhood can be a bit iffy it at times if you walk away from the ballpark. Just look for the nice streets and you will be OK. My only complaint was the street noise is very loud and I mean loud. Even with the air conditioner on it was still very noisy espically after a ballgame. There are a lot of pubs and bars in the area so that adds to the noise level. I don't know if the back rooms are quiter but you might want to ask when you check in.

This hotel is in a great location within walking distance of restaurants, clubs and shopping. The room is rather small and quite noisy, with a window air conditioner allowing in street noise, but its location more than makes up for that. We stayed two nights and didn't have a problem until the morning we were to check out. The toilet overflowed around 5:00 a.m. When we called the front desk for assistance, we were told maintenance staff didn't come in until 8 or 8:30. We asked for a plunger to at least try to get the water down, but were told it had been given to another guest and was not available. The front desk did bring 3 extra towels to help soak up the water from the floor & carpet, but we had to stay in a foul smelling, wet room until housekeeping arrived around 8. The housekeeper finally brought up a plunger. We never did hear from maintenance. The front desk staff was most unhelpful in trying to resolve this problem.

Can't beat the price and the location. I was able to walk to my convention, and restaurants. My room was Clean, I got free breakfast.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Taking a petty cab Amidst the taxis, buses, and trolleys, you will people riding bikes with a back seat for two. These are petty cabs, and they congregate around the downtown waterfront and in front of major hotels on Harbor Drive. These are local people who know their way around and can get you to places you wouldn't otherwise find. While they pedal, they dispense advice about what see and provide practical information that you won't read about in your tour guide or Go San Diego book. These petty cabs aren't metered, so what you pay is a matter of negotiation. Taking a petty cab is a great way to get the lay of the land in the downtown area after you have just arrived. Taking a petty cab can also be a great way to wrap up a trip with a few sights you missed.
