They told us our "garden" room wasn't cleaned and ready when we arrived; so we were shown a nice garden room that was suppossed to be the same as our room. We paid for the room and waited an hour until ours was ready. ( They charged $300.00 dollars that saturday night.)
When the room was ready they gave us the key and told us where it was. It was the old part of the Hotel by the parking lot, with a partial view of the pool from the patio door. The marimba music and the crowd were loud all day. The room was nothing like the one they showed us! A motel Six room would be a good comparison of what it looked like. There were long black hairs from a previous occupant laying on the bathroom floor. The carpet wasn't vacuumed. The bed conforter was human stained. The screen door kept falling off the track. This was very unsatisfactory to us. We
expected them to lower the price for Sunday and Monday night as other hotels do but when we checked out, they charged us $300.00 for all three nights. I will write a BLOG about this Hotel, so every one can see it.

Great Stay!

from A TripAdvisor Member
First of all...regarding the review below saying, "What a dump", that exact same review is made of another San Diego hotel as well...somebody with too much time on their hands. With regard to what others say about the Catamaran being over-priced, what you need to understand is that you are paying for this hotel's awesome location. Sure, you can go to the Hilton Gas Lamp and have greater amenitites, but you are not walking to the beach (maybe to the airport!). This is a 3.5 star place in a great location with friendly people and nice service. In the summer, I would imagine our $99 room would probably cost $200 plus...yes a lot of money but relative to the cost of other hotels and this hotel's great location, a fair price for what you get. Had dinner at "World Famous" (within easy walking distance for my young kids) and the food was awesome!! My wife and I plan to come back.

What a perfect place

Just wanted to let you know our family had a wonderful and relaxing stay. The rooms have just been remodeled. A big improvement over our last stay there. The grounds are very tropical. The staff was very helpful and the whole place was very clean. The location of the Catamaran is perfect for what we like to do. We'll be back.

Over Priced and not very helpful

Survived the fire

We can't say enough good things about the staff at the Catamaran. We were evacuated by the great San Diego fire and decided to stay in a hotel instead of the shelter. We choose the Catamaran on the recommendation of a friend. I'm glad we chose it. The air was much cleaner at the coast and the staff went out of their way to accomodate us. I would recommend this place to anyone coming to San Diego.

Catamaran was great

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family of four just spent 3 fun-filled, relaxing days at the Catamaran. Overall a good stay, but there were a few quirks. For just under $200 a night we booked the most inexpensive room they had - the garden view floor level. Upon arrival, we were told our room would be ready in about an hour and we would have to wait. After over two hours we were still waiting. They kept saying the room would be ready in afew more minutes. We had two energetic, small children with us, so waiting was not easy. I did not find staff or other guests to be especially welcoming toward our small children (5 yrs, 2 yrs). There were more glares than smiles, if you know what I mean.We couldn't understand why they just didn't put us in another room. Eventually we were able to check in around 5:30. Free of extra charge, we were upgraded to a tower studio room (ninth floor), which I was alittle apprehensive about with my kids. The Tower turned out to be perfect. With a kitchenet and extra sofa bed, we were in Pacific Ocean heaven. The room seemed clean, but there was a bad smell coming from sink. The bell hop was speedy. The view was beautiful. (We even got to see distant Disney fireworks at 9:45 every night). We felt like they had made up for the long check-in wait.To sum up the good and bad: GOOD Location. On one side of hotel, cross the street and walk half a block and you are at "the beach" - Mission, I think. On the other side of hotel, Catamaran also has a cove were kids can play in the water and sand (no waves). You can rent boats, bikes, chairs, umbrellas.Restaurants and stores - Many restaurants in the area including Hooters, Joe's Crabshack, Burger King, IHOP, etc. There is a "market' half a block away and a grocery store about two blocks away. We also ate at Saska's (seafood/steaks) down the street and it was WONDERFUL! Catamaran also grills hamburgers by the pool (big margaritas too). I heard raves about the restaurant at Catamaran - Atoll, but didn't get the chance to try it.The Bajia Belle. Boatride free to hotel guests. Loved it. About an hour long ride with ice cream for kids and drinks for adults (pricey sundaes and cocktails). Parrots and free roaming ducks and fish were great. Grounds were beautiful and well kept. Friendly/polite groundskeepers and housekeeping staff.BAD Hotel personnel at front desk was not friendly. Reminded me of robots with attitudes.Swimming pool was COLD. I thought website said it was a heated pool. If it was, it wasn't heated much. We tried to swim one evening and couldn't bear it. Then had to search for towels. I even dipped my foot in one afternoon, and decided a nap was better than a cold swim. No kids pool, thought I had read they had a swimming pool for kids, but I may be mistaken.Game room - tiny, dark, outdated games...Don't relay on this for entertainment for children!Extended stay. Got alot of attitude when we asked to stay an extra day. We were told we would have to change rooms, as the room we were in was taken. So we moved (seven bags and two kids), but we noted that the room stayed dark (no occupants) all night. They also locked us out at one point and we had to go down to the lobby to find a key that would work...again, usually not a big deal, but with two kids in tote....I'm giving a high rating on this hotel due to it's location and the hotel itself. The grounds (duck streams, fish, parrots and flowers) and location are so wonderful that they outweigh the front desk staff and any other problems we encountered. Next time I will probably go to another hotel if I plan to have kids with me. Eventhough they boast of many "kids activities" I felt like this was a hotel targeted at adult couples and convention parties. The Bahia might have been a better choice for us.

Great Service!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have been going to San Diego for the past 5 years for our annual family vacation and the Catamaran Resort was great. They have a great boat that is free for hotel guest that is like a cocktail cruse and you can catch a sunset and have a drink without being nickel and dimed to death, like other hotels. With the hotel located on Mission Bay and just a block from the ocean we were upset we forgot to bring our boogie board and swim fins. My 6 year old mentioned it at check-in and about 15 minutes after we checked in there was a knock at our door and a young bellman was at our door with a boogie board for us to use during our stay. It is great to see there are some hotels that still really care about their guest.. The Catamaran is defiantly one of the nicest hotels we have ever been too.

A good place to relax

from Tarasque
Unlike some of your reviewers, we wern't in the tower, neither did we pay a lot of money for the room. The d├ęcor was a little sombre I guess, but the room was large, clean and well designed. We especially liked the way there was a separate washing area from the bath, shower and toilet. A fridge was available on request as well. The gardens were simply delightful with little water courses running through the central area and with various wild-life to enjoy. We were first allocated a ground floor bay-view room, but changed it for one which was quieter on the other side of the complex. There was after all, a large parrot directly outside the front door and if you like an afternoon rest, that is not what you need! The Pacific Beach and boardwalk is straight across the road, and access is also direct to the Bay Beach. The whole area is very laid back - it's like stepping back in time 30 years, and I guess this reflects on the style of the hotel too. Don't expect staff to be jumping around to meet your every need; just slow down and adjust to the time differential.

Great Place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We returned today from a 16 day stay in the USA the last 5 nights at the Catamaran Hotel. We were not disappointed although our room had a great view of the car park too. The staff were polite and friendly and certainly seemed to know their jobs, our tower rooms with a kitchenette (oh the joy of being able to make a proper cup of tea!) were spacious, spotless and very well appointed. No, neither the restaurant nor the boat hire was cheap, and the day cost of hiring deckchairs was rather excessive but the food was excellent particuarly the Sunday brunch and the kids really enjoyed watching a number of wedding ceremonies being carried out in the grounds over the weekend. It wasn't cheap but it was a lovely relaxing place to stay.

Wonderful Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Recently stayed at the Catamaran over the weekend with my family, stayed in one of their Bayview Suites in the Tower. I booked directly with the hotel over their reservation center, and recieved the exact room the agent described to me (unlike when you book online). Separate balconies from both the bedroom side and living room side, with a fabulous view of the bay and a kitchen. The hotel has a great pool area with music, and snaks, kids really enjoy. The kids also enjoy seeing the duck pond around the hotel and the parrots. The hotel has wonderful grounds, very jungle like, great for photos. The location, however was better than I expected. Don't be fool the hotel is on the bayside, and has a sandy beach, however the Ocean and the boardwalk was right across the street. The Hotel seems to be pack and the location seems to attract allot of crowds, so it can get kind of busy. Do recommend for families. 5 Stars

overpriced for quality

from LesliSLC_Utah
We stayed at the Catamaran Resort July 2003. It's location is ideal if you want to be walking distance to Beach, Bay & Restaurants. Nice Pool area, fitness room just ok. Property is in need of some maintanence and updating, especially considering the price. Wouldn't stay again unless I could be assured an updated room. Restaurant had good food and service, but pricey.

The Cove Highly recommend stopping at the the La Jolla cove. What a spectacular day with view and the shopping.

Best dining options I live in SD and conduct meeting here all the time. Here are the best places that you must try for dining: The Marine Room in La Jolla (ocean runs directly under the restaurant...wonderful place). Oceanair in downtown for the best seafood. Buon Appitito in Little Italy for the best Italian.
