Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Lamplighter Inn and Suites Hotel
Best for the price
We just returned from a seven night stay at this hotel. We reserved two rooms. One was a family suite with a separate bedroom with two queen beds, a full kitchen and a separate living area. The hotel was very clean. The rooms were spacious and the price was right. We booked thru Costco Travel. The free breakfast was excellent. The location was about 20 minutes from the main tourist attractions. I would recommend this hotel.
Bestwestern Lamplighter Inn San Diego area
Hi. I want to thank Busymom3 for her positive review as that was the deciding factor for my booking of this hotel. I have two boys 10 and 7 and this was a very clean hotel. They loved the heated pool especially in the 67 degree highs we experienced. (we are from the heat of Texas) My husband was also pleased. The floral setting and the smell of Jasmin right outside our door gave the hotel a tropical feel. The staff was very helpful and courteous. The Manager was very pleasant also. The area does not truly represent this nice hotel but it's only-15 minutes from most attractions, Seaworld, Balboa Park. 30 min to Legoland. HW 8 West leading to HW 5 N or S is 3 minutes away. There is a Kosher deli across the street, a CVS, RiteAid, Vons groceries, Ralphs groceries and a couple of restaurants a few blocks down the road. We took advantage of the cont. breakfast which was a pretty good variety. If you are searching for a good hotel stay for less than hotel circle or oceanfront prices, I would suggest this one. I would go back again. Thank you again busymom3 and thank you David.
I spent three nights at the Lamplighter and found it to be clean, comfortable and very good value. The check-in was effortless and the staff very friendly. The room was clean, comfortable and had everything I needed for a short stay. The skylight in the bathroom was particularly nice. We skipped breakfast as the breakfast room was always full and there was nowhere to sit (a comment echoed in other reviews). There was no difficulty to getting to the various San Diego tourist spots and there are a number of restaurants and take aways near the hotel. Other than missing out on breakfast, I was entirely happy with the Lamplighter and would stay again without hesitation.
A Gem off the Beaten Path
This place was very clean! A bit off the beaten path, but worth a stay overnight when you just want to come back to a place to sleep and maybe take a swim! Manager wants to please you and is picky about maintaining the Inn. I can tell our room was recently remodeled...very nice!
Avoid Woodstocks...didn't like the Pizza. But the mexican place next to it (hole-in-the-wall) was very good.
Pool lit up at night by lights in trees and little touches (fresh towels draped over the lounges for your use) were a surprise.
Get a room toward the back and be prepared for some guests departing early (workers for the electric company were staying here). Also, breakfast was fine, but as posted here...seating is a problem and there is only a small desk in your room to 'eat' at.
Place was a gem!!! Our family of 4 enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for your kind review of our hotel. As I take great pride in my staff & our hotel It is important to me that all of our guest have a pleasant & enjoyable stay. Looking forward to you staying with us again.
Sincerely - General Manager
Better than the average motel
My husband I stayed here with our 2 dogs Easter weekend. This is great pet-friendly lodging for the budget-conscious traveler. The staff was very friendly, including housekeeping. If you have a car and don't mind driving everywhere, I highly recommend this place. The room was so clean (there wasn't even a hint of mold in the shower, which I have seen even in high-end hotels) and the bed was very comfortable. It had everything we needed and is in an up-and-coming area of El Cajon Blvd. A few blocks away is Woodstock's Pizza, one of the best pizza places in California, as well as a supermarket, drugstore and 2 sandwich shops. Not a walkable neighborhood (about a mile down is the ghetto), but very quiet and well-lit at night. We'll definitely stay here again!
t need to check in early!
When I found out about a yearly "inspection" about to take place, I figured that this hotel would be fairly decent and clean--at least for the two nights we were to stay there. That was pretty much true. I'm not sure how it may be during the rest of the year, however. I will say that the breakfast room is SMALL with very few tables and chairs although there are signs that they don't want you to take your food to your room to eat. Go figure. But if you do find a space to sit and eat they have the make-your-own waffles which were pretty good. This hotel also will not let you check in early under any circumstances. No exceptions. That was our experience.
As I take great pride in my front desk staff & their excellent guest services I was surprised to read this about not allowing our guest to check in early. Being that check-out time is not until11:00AM, my housekeeping staff needs time to get into the rooms & get them ready for the days check-ins. But if there is a room ready in the catergory that the guest has booked, we will always check the guest in early. I sincerely hope this guest will give us another chance.

Not bad if need to be near SDSU!
We wanted to stay near SDSU and found this motel after a search on this site. The room for the price was acceptable, it was clean and the front desk was very accommodating. They even gave us a goody bag at check-in. My son loved the waffle maker at breakfast and has now insisted that we purchase one so he can have fresh waffles at home! Starbucks is about 2 blocks away so in my book...all was OK!
Average BW yet comfortable
Stayed for one night during Thanksgiving weekend with my family for a visit to Sea World and Las Americas Outlet near the Mexican border. The rooms were nice. Breakfast was good with waffles, bagels, eggs, fruit, juice, etc. Although I have to agree with the previous comment made re: the breakfast area to be cramped and small. I can only imagine during summertime when the hotel is booked - there would be so much traffic getting breakfast. The drive to/from Sea World and the outlet wasn't a problem for us - only took 15-20 minutes! Overall, it was an enjoyable stay.
A Beautiful Place to Stay
The street that this hotel is on is not an example of what the hotel is like! El Cajon Blvd leaves a lot to be desired but this hotel is clean and beautiful and the staff helpful and nice. We were pleasantly suprised by the wonderful grounds and heated swimming pool. Traveling with small children, we like having a separated sleeping and tv area. This hotel was perfect for that. It was like a small apartment. Very clean and well remodled. The pool is beautiful and heated, my kids enjoyed it very much! There is no hot tub but the pool area does have a gas bbq if you are so inclined. We did not use it on this stay. We have relatives who live within blocks of this hotel, it was very convenient for us. We didn't have to go far for the beach or other attractions, although we were not in San Diego for that. The staff was exceptional. The breakfast was wonderful, complete with waffles! All in all, I would recommend this hotel in a heart beat.
Fabulous hotel at an affordable price
We recently stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in a 2 x queen bed room and really enjoyed our stay. Our room was clean, nicely furnished and had very comfortable beds. The hotel is located very close to the University in a good area. We had a car and found the location very handy for visiting the locations of Seaworld, Zoo, Animal Park and some shopping malls. We loved the fact that it was not located in the 'tourist' areas of downtown. In saying that, I would not choose this hotel if you do not have a car.
The breakfast provided was great value - juice, cereal, muffins, toast, waffles & fruit (apples). Finding a table can be a challenge if the hotel is fully booked - we took ours to the pool and ate it poolside instead.
The staff at the desk were very friendly & helpful with directions, restaurant ideas and shopping destinations. The service provided by them was really outstanding.
Overall we loved our stay and it would definately be our 1st choice when we visit San Diego again.
Top Local Tips for San Diego
Don't miss the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Inexpensive and educational.
There are no guarantees about winter weather in San Diego. It was COLD and RAINY while I was here.
Huge Outlet Stores
Las Americas, close to Mexican Border, take I-5S and take last US-exit (don't pass this exit!!!). At Las Americas there were a lot of stores for shopping! Fair prices!
