Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Island Palms and Marina Hotel

Better than the Three Best Westerns

from newthings
We stayed at the Palms for one night. The staff was extremely helpful and the restaurant waitress was very helpful and friendly too.
It was quiet, however, some 20-somethings had a loud party in one of the rooms and my husband went outside and politely told them to quiet it down which they did.
The room was fine with one big exception: THe fitted Sheet on the bed was too big for the matress and so it did not fit properly. When we lowered the sheets and blanket before we went to sleep, the whole bed came apart and it became worse and worse throughout the night. This was also a problem in the previous Best Western we stayed at. Their fitted sheets don't match the size of the mattress.
Otherwise, the marina was lovely - the restaurant food was ok, the place was clean and it looked much better than most of the run of the mill Best Westerns on the main roads.

We have had better experiences here. But, we will be back.

We just stayed at the Island Palms for two nights. It was our third visit. We were a bit more disappointed then our previous visits. The first night we went to the pool in the evening and it was freezing. So we decided to ask them to turn up the heat. We went to get a towel and there were no towels at the pool. We went to call the front desk and the house phone by the pool didn’t work (good thing it wasn’t an emergency). So my husband had to walk to the room (without a towel) to call the front desk to request towels and the pool to be heated (and he told them the phone wasn’t working at the pool). They assured us the pool would be heated by the next day. The next day we left to go to lunch, we arrived back to the room around 12:30 and the maid had not come yet. So we headed to the (hopefully warm) pool, which was still COLD. At this point we were a little perturbed. For the second time I asked the nice gentlemen (seemed like a manager) if he would PLEASE heat the pool. He assured me it was at 85 degrees, until he felt it for himself. It was maybe 70 degrees. After swimming in the cold pool we headed back to our room around 2:30 and the maid had just started cleaning!! So we let the kids play in the grass outside our room. You know those cute ducks around the property? Well those cute ducks wandering around the property have to poop somewhere…. Yep on the grass. So our kids had duck poop on the bottom of their shoes… yuck!
We have experienced a more pleasurable time in the past, but we will be back. We also really like Humphrey’s Inn two hotels down, I would venture to say I like Humphrey’s better. Both are nice places. Humphrey’s seems more tropical to me with a much larger (warmer) pool.

Very disappointing

from meaveg
I found out that people's opinions of hotel rooms are very similar to movies.....we all see it differently.

I stayed at the Island Palms because it got pretty good reviews. When I arrived I was really disappointed. It's very old. Big spill stains on the carpet. Worn bedspreads. Maybe I wouldn't have minded if I was spending $50 - 80 a night but at $160. it's ridiculous.

The grounds could be a lot prettier but obviously there's no gardner or groundsman.
Upon checking out I was really surprised to see that they charged us for the morning paper they put outside our door. Also after having our room cleaned we were left with no large towels and no additional T.P.

The waitress we had for breakfast needs to find a job where she's not working with the public.

The best part about staying here were the ducks who came to our door in the morning for breakfast.

I do not recommend staying here unless you get a really really good rate.

Great deal and delicious food

We were down in San Diego to see a concert at Humphrey's By the Bay and many of the hotels were booked but we were able to get in at Best Western Isalnd Palms in Shelter Island. We went down there without knowing much about the hotel and we were genuinely surprised by the quality of the food, the size of the room (we did have a suite) and the beauty of the grounds. Would stay here again in a heatbeat. We thought the suite was worth the extra money - and our view was lovely.

Very nice!

Nice place! Stayed for 3 days in August 2004 just to get away for a mini-vacation. The grounds are not spacious but very tropical and nice. The rooms are older but renovated and clean. We had a problem with the bathroom light flickering. The staff were so nice about fixing it (even though it took a while). Actually, the rooms could use better lighting. All the staff were very accomodating & pleasant. We enjoyed the restaurant though it was small but uncrowded. The waitress wasn't as perky as she could have been, maybe because it was in the morning. We would stay here again in the future.

this place is stuck in a time warp!

from Ternana
We 'endured' a couple of nights at this place last week, save your money for somewhere that's good. Having prepaid we 'stuck it out' for the 8 hours each night we spent there.

Our room was dark, decorated by a visually impared decorator from the '50's and bloody noisy with passing trucks, trollies et al from 5 am on. The small pool area was dominated by screaming kids.

On the plus side the staff were helpful and very pleasant. The small bar area was OK for a quick beer.

Being from out of town we also asked the front desk for a good local restaruant, we were directed to the 'Red Sails' about 1 mile away, avoid this like the plauge people, unless you enjoy a menu dominated by deep fat fried food served on plastic plates and plastic glasses and a ''15% service charge added to your bill for convenience''. Although it does look out on to a working harbour.

Stay as the Shelter Island Inn Instead

from A TripAdvisor Member
After staying at the Shelter Island Inn down the street from this Best Western some months prior, we decided to try the Island Palms because their restaurant was more conveniently located on their property. We loved the room and the view. However, after making our reservations several months in advance, and after driving 6 hours, I had to fight to get the bay-view room that I had requested. Why do they make you do that? We were disappointed that the balcony was not private and we could hear everyone's coming & going on the walkways. The food and the service at the restaurant was lousy. We tried it twice and gave up. We love the area and plan to go back. But, we will stay at the Shelter Island Inn next time. Their rooms provide much more privacy and the view is even better.

What a paradise!

We were in a suite for 2 nights and it was wonderful! It was really more like an apartment than a suite. We had a full kitchen--including a full size refrigerator, stove, dishes, pots and pans, etc. The bathroom was huge and there was plenty of room in the bedroom and in the living room. The view outside our room was phenomenal! When we opened our curtains we saw a beautiful green lawn (not something we see very often in Arizona!) as well as a fantastic view of the marina just steps from our back door. In the back of the hotel is a great walking path which runs the length of the marina. In the front of the hotel is another great path with fantastic views of the bay. We felt very safe there even when walking at night. Our children enjoyed the huge pool which also had a great view of the marina. We hated to leave and will definitely be back next year!

Beautiful rooms and Resort....

from A TripAdvisor Member
The rooms and marina view were amazing. The bathrooms are huge, and even some have private porches.
The reason why I only gave it three out of five was due to the fact that the restaurant and its staff were very unhelpful.
The day we arrived we ate a horrible meal there. Because, we wanted to give it another chance we ordered room service for breakfast. The food was cold, the milk was warm and they forgot the toast. We ordered again and it was never brought. They also charge a 15% service charge for the horrible service
Eat somewhere else and not at the Blue Wave or whatever it's called, but enjoy the view.

Beautiful view and a clean room

from Vixkix69
Well,I have been reading the reviews and this hotel had the fewest bad ones.So....I booked for 6 nights.I called to confirm twice [just in case].I got exactly what I had requested....a full marina view and a king bed.The room was ok.It wasn't overly large or new but the bathroom was roomy, the shower big enough for two [with a nice glass door] and the sink counter was great.
Yes,having the frig in the bathroom WAS a little weird but it was ok.
The view was GREAT and the bay was also near by,in front of the hotel.GORGEOUS!!!
Every morning,I opened the blinds to that blue marina at my window/backdoor,full of boats and ducks.Ducks came to my door.
If you want a great view to wake up to [not necesarrily a luxury room] and a super cleaning staff, then this may be the place for you. It's close to everything [if you have a car].
I got a great rate price for it at --------------------------------- Thanks!!
