Every time I go to San Diego, I stay at the Best Western Hacienda Hotel. The hotel is very accommodating, the rooms are always clean and the hotel grounds are lovely. Room rates are very reasonable. I have never had a bad experience at the hotel. I love being in Old Town San Diego, they have some of the best mexican restaurants. If you decide to stay at the Best Western Hacienda Hotel, you will not be disappointed.

Update for price conscious travellers

I wrote the review titled 'location, location, location in July. Anyway, my wife and I visited again this September and it was again an excellent base for our travels. As someone else has mentioned the trolley is located 200 yards from the hotel and ideal for Padres, Chargers and most shopping.
Main reason to add another review is to advise travellers to visit the San Diego tourism office which is located about mile north of the old town exit on the I5. I saved $30 a night by visiting there rather than booking on-line with any of the so called best deals. The chance you take is that they have rooms available!

Still a great place to visit.

Loved the location of the hotel and the layout was charming. As per other reviewers we found the stairs a challenge with our luggage, but soon got used to them. The pool was lovely and the staff friendly and helpful.

My family booked several rooms here while attending a wedding. We had a fabulous time and found this location perfect for easy access to Sea World, Mission Bay, the Padres (the trolley is near so you don't have to fight the traffic to go to the game), and shopping in Mission Valley, Horton Plaza, and Old Town. There's a great Sushi restaurant called Harney Sushi just down the street where we went twice.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I was there with my son who is mildly Autistic and everyone made us feel welcome and accepted.

It was fun to stay in this unusual layout with the hotel going up the hill. Though there are a lot of stairs, it's not that hard on those for whom stairs are difficult, if you get a room with easy access to the elevators.

If you want to stay in Old Town San Diego, this is a very conveniently located hotel. It is an easy walk to Whaley House, the Old Town State Historic Park, Bazaar del Mundo, lots of shops, and MANY restaurants. SeaWorld is about a 10 minute drive.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, but nothing special. We stayed in a suite, which had a separate bedroom and a twin size sofa sleeper in the living area. There was a bit of a noise problem between rooms, and the bed was not the most comfortable, but overall we had a wonderful stay here. The staff is VERY friendly and helpful, and the grounds are really lovely. We would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Hacienda Hotel in Old Town San Diego in August of 2004 for four days. I booked my reservation site unseen but on the recommendations from other Tripadvisor reviews. I really liked this hotel. I had an early morning flight and the hotel shuttle picked me up at the airport less than 10 minutes from when I called them. My room was spotless and quiet. The grounds are beautiful and it is centrally located in Old Town. The staff is so helpful. I would stay there again.

The place is very nicely decorated, the outside gives you a very relaxed feel. The premises is well secured, so one would feel safe there and it is a convenient location to many attractons.

The rooms inside I would say are average. I didn't feel they were wow..denitely spacious though.

My room in the lower level 400, was somewhat noisy. It is closest to the street. I stayed 3 nights.. the garbage truck was annoying in the early morning the last two days.

I would go back, but stay in a differnt room.

I agree with the previous reviewers. This is the best location!! Central to Old Town and the zoo.

Great place for a "base" when visiting San Diego. I would agree with those who indicated that the hotel is "spread-out". Probably not good for those who can't or don't want to walk far as there are alot of stairs! I also would not decorate in the manner of which our room was as the wood and furnishings were very dark. However, over-all, it's a great, clean place. We didn't notice any "sound-proofing" problems. The staff was very accommodating and the restuarant has great mexican food.

I stayed here with my 2 kids ages 4 and 7 for 4 days Aug 11th. It was great. A wonderful location for old town. The room was very clean and spacious. My son has severe food allergies, so with the microwave and frig, I could prepare almost all his meals. Also, we could all pack a lunch for our outings. There was plenty of counter space too. We arrived late and I wanted a quick good restaurant that was still open. The bell hop didn't just tell us where to go, but walked us to "Freds". There wasn't any parking under our building, so the bell hop had someone move his car. I needed directions to a grocery store and the front desk printed it out for me. I was extremely happy with the service.

We arrived in San Diego in mid-May without a room reservation. While contemplating what to do, my husband suggested that we get the "haunted house thing over with". He was referring to the Whaley House in Old Town. We arrived in Old Town and saw a Best Western next to the Whaley House, but thought it would be too pricey for us. We approached the front desk clerk who shocked us initially with the price, but he worked dilligently with us to get us the best price on our room. DISCOUNTS! We stayed for four days. Our room was lovely and overlooked the Whaley House. We spent most of our time on foot, enjoying all the wonderful things Old Town has to offer. Unfortunately, the secret must be out, because I was not able to get a room there in July. I am hoping to stay again at the Hacienda in December. Room service was great. The room was lovely - and quiet. We took some of the best naps of our lives in that room. I think we were on the 6th level. I enjoyed the exercise, but by husband didn't enjoy "the hike".

Great for kids! They felt like every day was an adventure up and down stairs, across "plazas" with water fountains, flowering bougainvillea everywhere; smallish pool, but plenty of swimming area for kids (any age, just no diving) and a hot tub adjacent (not big but enough for one small family or group of friends). Staff very swift to replenish poolside towels, to clean pool when palm tree debris fell in. Very large property, terraced with many small clusters of rooms on different levels of the hill, connected by many terracotta & glazed tiled outdoor stairs. Elevators avail. to most levels, but a little confusing at first because of the terraces. Parking not convenient, but plentiful. You get used to it.

Front desk staff very helpful to me, not so helpful to others, I observed. In house restaurant scenic, tasty and courteous waiters every time! Totally awesome location. You cannot ask for a better location. Minutes away from airport, but not noisy; steps from Old Town, etc.

Hotel is barely soundproofed, though. People complained about our noisy, bouncy kids; I heard the baby crying all night next door and the heavy heeled guy upstairs avery night.

I didn't expect a five star situation, and so was not disappointed! This is a three-star in my opinion, but they need to work on soundproofing.

I would definitely stay there again, esp. with our 9 & 4 year old.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Midway The MIdway Museum is a MUST! If you have time before your ship leaves, put your bags onboard then stay in the harbor area and visit. We spent over 3 hours there, so start out early in the day-hours are 10 to 5, 7 days, but allow lots of time to take the free audio tour, listen to the veterans talk, visit the bridge, peruse the flight deck and stop at the gift shop. One of our best museum experiences anywhere and i am not a military history kind of touring spouse. Many of the volunteers had served onboard and their true stories were riveting, especially those of the naval pilots. Get your picture taken at the entrance--30% of proceeds go to Museum. Adult Admission is currently$15, $10 for 62+ seniors, $8 youth,free for 5 and under, or active duty in uniform. See www.midway.org or call 619.544.9600.

walkable easy to get around using the trolley and buses.

Fred's Fred's was a great place for local Mexican food, and we ate there 3 out of 4 nights. I also highly recommend Jack and Giulios for Italian, which is where we ate on the off night from Fred's.
