Fire alarm sounded at about 8:30 and it was found that some teenagers had pulled it. No fire. Then at about 10:15 the front desk called my room to see if everything was ok...not at all welcome. They did take the parking fee off my bill. If it wasn't for the prime location I would never stay there again. Staff did not seem concerned about the fire alarm and it's consequences.

The hotel was very nice and the pool was big. We had many problems with our room keys, but the we spend 4 nights at this hotel and the hotel itself was very nice.

We found the front desk staff to be very friendy and helpful but will not stay here again. We stayed in room 207 which is a handicapped room, not sure how it passes as that, there was barely enough room to squeeze through walking at the end of the beds. My husband had to repair the TV cable to get tv to work, you could see the hallway lights shining through all four sides of the door jam at night. The toilet is a handicapped version but it slanted upward in the front, so being 5'5' my feet dangled 2 inches off the ground. The cleanliness of the room was questionable with hair laying on the bathroom floor when we arrived, burn marks in comforters. We were also told that a roll away would fit easily in the room, there was hardly any room to walk without the roll away. The location is great if you're going just to the beach, we did not feel this was a safe area to stroll around the streets with children. We found this to be more of a college party beach, which was ok, but we did have adults screaming and chasing each other through the halls at 1:30am which is not acceptable to me, of course this is not the hotels fault, but that is the kind of people this location attracts. We will not stay here again. A couple positive notes to leave on, the front desk staff was very nice and helpful, there was plenty of parking. There is an awesome surf shop within walking distance that was so friendly and accommodating, Pacific Beach Surf Shop 858-373-1138, they did an excellent surf lesson for beginning teenagers. The view from the room was very nice.

Enjoying March Madness

My family stayed at the Blue Sea for three nights in March, 2005. The positives for the property are:
-The hotel is newly renovated and suites are available.
- Rooms were clean and confortable. Ours had a small fridge. Nice oversized tub/shower- bathroom was nicely appointed.
-The property is located directly on the boardwalk and is oceanfront. Pacific Beach is a surfer beach which made it a quite an interesting place. Surfing lessons are readily available at several shops next door.
- The pool area although small was heated and enjoyable with a jacuzzi.
- Several good restaurants right in the area including the World Famous Restaurant in the Surfer Hotel next door.
- Most of the front desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
- Security guards were on duty at night the entire weekend.
- About a fifteen minute drive on weekend to the San Diego Zoo and Old Town. Only a ten minute drive to Sea World.

The negatives were:
-It was Spring Break and there many college students staying at the hotel and in the area. All in all, they were not too rowdy and the hotel did have security on guard all weekend. Both families and students co-existed quite well but this may not be right for everyone.
- The hotel is adjacent to a small public parking area. There were several homeless people staying on the beach.
- No continental breakfast. However, there is a coffee concession open in the mornings until around 1pm.

Keep in mind this is a Best Western and not the Ritz. I do think it is one of the better Best Western's and our experience was quite positive so I consider it above average overall. Enjoy your stay in San Diego!

we had room 567-3rd floor listed as a partial ocean view but a great view! room was clean and spacious. staff was friendly and the location was great. will stay here again!

Had a couple of problems

While I found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, I would never stay at this hotel again. We had to change rooms three times and each time there was something broken in the room (television, air conditioner, toilet). After three tries we got a room with only a broken air conditioner. The temperature was on the cool side, so we decided that rather than move again we would just keep the window open. Unfortunately, the next day when my husband tried to take a shower he found out that the hot water didn't work. He had to go to a room downstairs to shower. I would not recommend this hotel for anything other than its location.

Good Value

This hotel is right on the beach. However, the part on the beach is for surfers only!! You may not swim here or boggie board. That is over a 100 yards or more away. This is also a local hang out. College area. Lots of partying going on. And they can drink on the beach. Good place to stay in off seasons or during the week, if you want to surf. Clean rooms and ok pool.

This hotel is a Best Western, not a ritz carlton. The rooms are very nice and clean, good in room coffee, very nice staff, and the best view of the Pacific ocean on the west coast. I like this hotel better than the Hotel Dell in Coronado. You can not beat this for the money. We are very happy and plan a trip back next summer.

The positives were the location of the hotel to the beach and restaurants, the friendly staff, housekeeping and the great rate that we got off the internet. The only little negatives were that the rug was pretty soiled, it was a very tight squeeze between the beds and dresser and a small pool area (limited seating). FYI, Pacific Beach seemed to be more of a college age party scene than a family destination.
All in all, we had a good time.

Nice Hotel, Great Views

I have just returned from a two week driving tour of California and picked this hotel on facilities and location. It was by far the best hotel we stayed in. We stayed for three nights and the rooms were huge, clean and modern. We paid extra for a partial sea view and didn't expect to get a kitchenette aswell. The views were brilliant of the pool and sea. The people on the front desk were very helpful and there was plenty of parking. There was plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Seaworld is ten minutes away by car.I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to San Diego, I would certainly stay here again.

Family Friendly Excursion

A great family hotel. We booked a VERY inexpensive internet rate and were upgraded to the suite upon our arrival!!! Superb, awesome front desk personnel. Ample parking, its not only underground, but also outside. We always found a space and they told me the reason we were upgraded is because they were quite full. Perhaps people didn't know where all of the lots were and thought there was only the underground spaces? Also read my review on the Ocean Park Inn. We stayed two nights at each, two adults, and two children ages 8 & 11. The OPI won my higher ranking, but it was only because the Best Western was a bit more outdated on the inside. The pool is better at the Best Western because there is a deep end, again, it depends what your requirements are. Both pool areas were combination locked and secure and ample area to sun yourself and feel comfortable. No bugs. Highly recommended, don't take your family to a hotel on hotel circle next to the highway, stay right on Pacific Beach and shop for your rates! For me, internet rates are always much lower than calling the hotel directly. Shop the airline sites directly for airfares, the major travel internet sites DO NOT carry all airlines. If you feel uncomfortable, call the hotel in about a week and confirm your reservation, that is what I did. This is the first trip that I booked myself entirely on the internet. No problems, just confirm so that you feel comfortable. Happy traveling!

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Wine Country in Temecula An hour east of San Diego is the beautiful town of Temecula. It is the "home" of the southern California wine country. There are dozens of wineries equipped for tours and wine tastings. All have cute little gift shops. Get the brochure from your hotel and pick out several wineries and go visit. It is an easy drive.

Adjacent Parking Lot is Free! If you get there late and can find a spot in the adjacent parking lot, you don't have to pay $10 for parking in the hotel lot. However, if you plan on driving during the day, then maybe its best to just pay $10 for in and out access because the lot gets very crowded.

Marine Layer? When I first started staying at the Blue Sea, I was told to avoid booking in June to avoid so-called 'June Gloom', a persistent layer of low cloud and/or fog which often hung over the beach areas all day every day, only occasionally burning off or rolling out to sea for a few hours mid-day, making sun-bathing a joke and obliterating sunsets. In the past five or six years, however, the marine layer has overspread the calendar, and it's now as likely as not, regardless of the time of year, that the immediate coast will be gray. I used to shoot (literally) a roll of film at sunset almost every night; in the past five years (with two week-long trips annually, summer and autumn), I've only seen half a dozen sunsets, the rest buried in cloud. And it's almost always the beach strip - drive a half mile east and it's a cloudless blue sky. You may be oceanfront - but sun on the beach and sunsets have become increasingly rare.
