Good Location Good value for Money

Nov. 21/05 Very Good Location+ Walking Distance to Trolley Service + Little Italy . Sevice very good. Rooms very Clean. Rooms should to be refurbished well worn. Room Lighting to dim for me. A/C worked perfect.

Fine For What We Needed

Our family of 4 ( 2 adults and 2 kids 12 and 14) visited Dan Diego last week and based our hotel on the following. Budget, with or without a view and close to the Zoo. We had a car so we needed parking.
Our initial check-in was fine, the staff did what they had to do and nothing more. We requested a room with 2 Queen beds non-smoking. The entire floor we stayed on (5th) was non-smoking, but upon entering the room we noticed a definite smoke odor. Went downstairs and requested another room but they said there were no more available. Went back to the room and opened up the slider (a small balcony that you could see an obstructed view of the bay with) which seemed to help the odor. The bathroom has no ventilation fan and the AC system is the older type which allows smoke from other floors to permeate the rooms. Found that the tv/refrigerator did not work so went back downstairs and asked for another room again. I even offered to pay for an upgrade but she checked and there were no 2 Queen non-smoking rooms left (the Chargers/Steelers game was the next night so I guess the area was full up) They sent up the maint. man immediately and he found the fuse was blown; he reset it and everything worked.
The room with 2 Queen beds was small but it worked. They had the frig. and a microwave, small table and 2 chairs. The bathroom was sufficient (no fan though) We had to call and request 4 towels all 3 days we were there but they came promptly.
Parking is available for only $7 a day which is reasonable. The parking garage IS a tight fit especially with everyone driving SUV's these days.
The pool was fine as was the hot tub, the kids enjoyed it.
The continental breakfast at the restaurant next door was a joke. You received juice, coffee or tea and toast. Thats it. Nothing more. Unless you wanted eggs and fruit for an extra $3.50. I'd suggest walking down to the "It's A Grind" on India street and buying a coffee and pastry for breakfast.
Restaurant recommendations: We ate at "The Pizza Grotto" down the street in Little Italy. The front of the place is a store so don't be mislead, the restaurant is in the back. Awesome pizza; drink a bottle of Chianti and you get to sign it so they can hang it from the ceiling.
If you have a car you can drive to The Corvette Diner on 5th street; good food and fun wait staff. They throw things at you straws, napkins, gum etc. The kids had a blast and the chicken Fried Steak is good.
Extraordinary Desserts were wonderful, but the Extraordinary Prices were a bit much. $22 for 2 desserts and a coffee.
Would I stay at this place again? If I was looking for a budget hotel for around a hundred bucks yeah I guess.

Stayed for a few days and found the location just right for access to nightlife and restaurants. Plenty of parking for a small charge. Rooms were a decent size well presented and clean, all usual amenities, although lower floors have restricted views.
Competitively priced in a city where room prices seem excessively high.

I used this hotel recently because of its location - near the San Diego National Bank building where I was doing some training for another organization. The hotel is a "typical" Best Western - basic. The hotel is on the older side. Staff are pleasant and helpful. My room was basically furnished, but there was a microwave and small refrigerator in the room. I could hear the people in the room next door. Free wireless high speed internet access in rooms. The rate quoted was $139.00 night. They offer free continental breakfast from the Bayside Restaurant (next door). Dinner is also available. There's a Rite-Aid drug store across the street. I arrived on Sunday evening, and there wasn't a restaurant very close by that was open, but the Bay is about 4 blocks away and there are restaurants there. Location of the hotel is okay - a mix of city style duplexes and apts and businesses. The train station is a few blocks away. If you have a car (I didn't) it would be very easy to get around. The hotel charges a nominal fee for parking. They also have a free shuttle to and from the airport. If they aren't too busy, the shuttle will take guests to nearby destinations. There's a small swimming pool in the back. No bellman available. All in all, a good value for a hotel in downtown San Diego.

This was a nice, clean hotel in a very central location for the price. Very close to the Gaslamp quarter which is great for nightlife and shopping. Enjoyed my stay here and would recommend if you are on a budget.

Best place yet

My husband travels to San Diego a couple of times a year on business, and I occasionally accompany him. He has stayed at several different hotels, and most have been pretty bleak.
For the money, this has been by far and away the best place we've stayed. The room was spotless, the staff was friendly and helpful (they even have maps to show you how to get somewhere), the view was great (they overlook the Star of India sailing ship) and breakfasts in the restaurant with the coupons were far better than we'd expected.
You're a few short, relatively flat blocks walk to the bayside or two of the trolley lines, and there are several good places to eat nearby.
The pool was clean and well maintained, and the hottub equally so. About the only thing that wasn't perfect was the pool towels, they're a little ratty looking, but they were always clean.
My husband returns to San Diego next month, and there's no question where he'll be staying from now on when he goes there on business, or when I go along for a few extra days getaway.

perfect hotel. standard issue best western. hotel has a train station 5 mins down the hill or you can walk for 10 mins into the heart of san diego itself.

would stay again if i ever went back to san diego.

Fine stay at the Bayside

My husband and I went to San Diego for the weekened, we both felt the hotel was fine. Very close to the water (a plus) within walking distance. Wonderful restaurants nearby, many attractions. Its nice not to have to drive afer the trip there. Enjoy!

The rooms are large and nicely furnished. It was very clean also. We loved the bay view from the 11th floor. Well worth the upgrade. The Harbor is just 3 blocks away. Continental breakfast at the restaurant right next door was good. Parking was convenient although a bit close for SUV's. The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. I would stay here again!

Good value and wonderful views

We stayed at this hotel after a cruise and were delighted to find our room was available before 11 am at no additional charge. The harbour views are spectacular, especially from upper floors. The staff was extremely helpful with both tourist information and by providing a free ride out to the airport in order to pick up a rental car. The free continental breakfast was fully adequate.

The room was very clean but showing signs of age as was the mattress.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

Dining in San Diego We were there during the week, and therefore were able to take advantage of happy hour specials, which saved us lots of money!! If you head down to the Gaslamp District, you can find great restaurants, all with outside seating, and many have happy hour specials. This hotel is steps from Little Italy, and I would highly recommend Filip's Pizza Grotto. It's in an old-fashion Italian grocery store, and it's AMAZING!! We literally ate dinner behind the store shelves. We are from Chicago, but this pizza was YUMMY!!!

Thrifty car rental Thrifty car rental has awesome deal on line and the cars appear to be new and well kept.

San Diego - Gaslamp District - Very happening ! Try to check out the Gaslamp District on a Friday night after a Padres game. It is the place to be with friends. I can get crowded but it is fun. Public transportation doesn't seem to be that great, so rent a car to get around.
