We've stayed here before, and each time has been a pleasant experience. The staff is polite and helpful. Located in a beautiful part of San Diego bay. Good restaurants easily accessible.

Nice place, good value for price

I stayed at The Bay Club for a week in December '04 while attending a seminar on-site. The staff was very friendly during my stay. The common areas are clean and the view from the restaurant in to the marina is a nice change for a midwesterner like myself. I would definately rate their complimentary breakfast buffet one of the best I've experienced. My room was spacious, perhaps a little dated, but very comfortable and clean. The in closet safe was a nice touch. Since I was in a seminar all day and busy catching up on work in the evening I can't really comment on proximity to area attractions but it's convenient to the airport and there are a multitude of restaurant options nearby. While not a resort destination by any means, I would not have any issue recommending this propery.

My husband & I stayed at the Bay Club in a 2nd floor marina view room under the "Dinner for 2 with a View" package. We almost passed this hotel up based on some of the reviews and I am so glad we didn't. The staff was overwhelmingly gracious, courteous, and accomodating. The young men driving the courtesy car (a Lincoln Town Car) were especially friendly and helpful. The island/waterfront decor is very appropriate for the location, clean and comfortable. Our room was very spacious and the view of the marina was fabulous. We really enjoyed going out on the balcony in the evening for the fresh air and view of the lights. The dinner entrees were delicious (the dinner package allows 2 meals per night, any entree on the menu, including a very delicious (& huge) filet mignon and a filet of beef Oscar) and the wait-staff was very attentive and friendly. The breakfast buffet was excellent and included omelettes, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon and sausage, juice, fresh fruits, breads, cereal, etc. The location is wonderful with the bay directly across the road and a very nice walkway along the beach (great for walking off the big breakfasts). Our experience at the Bay Club was great, and it was so nice to have excellent customer service from the staff which seems rather rare nowadays. We will definitely stay here again.

Great Location - Average Facility

My fiancee and I stayed here for 2 nights and did their San Diego Zoo for 2 package. This included 2 nights accommodations, 2 free all inclusive passes to the zoo and free breakfast each morning. I originally reserved the rooms here because of the decent reviews here on TripAdvisor. I think we paid a little too much for the room package which was $164/night, but at the time, it was worth it to get the room, zoo tickets and have breakfast provided each morning, so it was mostly convenience.

When we checked in, it was pretty quick. The check in clerks seemed to have a little attitude as well as the waiters in the dining room. I don't know if they were just unhappy or under paid. The accommodations at this place were average at best. Mostly a musty smell in the room and just looked a little aged. This place could use some updates I think. We got a 2nd floor room overlooking the harbor. It sounded good online, but when I was there, I don't think I spent too much time out on the deck, since at low tide, you look down and it's a huge mud flat and a bunch of boats.

In the mornings, we had a free buffet breakfast, which was nice for convenience, but the food quality was average. The pool area was quiet small as well. We did end up eating in the restaurant one night for dinner and the food was good, but I felt I paid a little too much for it.

This is an average hotel, quality-wise for the price that you pay. The location is perfect, being on Shelter Island and it was close to everything. They also charge $5/night extra for parking, but if you do not want to pay it, there is free parking on the street out front, and it did seem pretty quiet and safe out there.

On the plus side, if you want a free view of the concerts at Humphrey's next door, they let you take your cocktails out to the pool area and you can view/hear the concerts from there, pretty neat!!!

All in all, I probably would not stay here again, as we stayed the next two nights at Humphrey's next door for a lot less money and got a lot better room, better pool, service etc.

I don't want this to sound like a bad review, it just wasn't for me. If you want an average room in a convenient location and you don't mind the costs, you might like this place. I can't really explain it, but the place didn't have any character and the staff just did not seem personable.

Excellent Place To Stay

My boyfriend and I stayed here September 22nd - September 25th. We really enjoyed it. The place was clean. The food was great. The view was out of this world. I would recommend the hotel and I will stay here again. The location was wonderful. All the employees were very nice and helpful.

Great Location, Time for a makeover

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. We loved the location. Being from the prairies in Canada we enjoyed being able to see the San Diego Bay from our balcony. The ships rolling by our window was a wonderfull sight and the Air force planes from the base accross the water was really neat. But if you need quiet and airforce planes don't excite you this will probably not make you to happy. The room itself was clean but dated. The staff was superb and the free morning buffet really helped us get off to a good start everyday. The pool is right by the eating area so if you are shy this may be uncomfortable.

We really enjoyed our stay and would stay again...especially if they did a renovation.

Location almost outweighs aging facility.

My husband and I recently spent one night at the Bay Club Hotel & Marina en route to Mexico. If you are drawn to a harbor/marina/yachting environment this is a wonderful location! It is convenient to the airport and there are several restaurants nearby. The facility has definitey seen better times...it was probably marvelous in its day but has taken a beating. The carpets were stained, there was a distinct smell of cleaning fluid in the room and the exterior is in need of painting and repair. That being said, the location is so pleasant that having breakfast outside next to the pool overlooking the marina was a real treat and we forgot about the slightly shabby room. There was a nominal charge for parking but easy access underground and plenty of space.

Beware the discount rooms!

We booked this hotel for one night through Hotels (which was the booking agent for Entertainment). When we arrived at 4:00 pm, we were told the room was not yet cleaned, even though the Hotels print-out claimed Check-in was at 3:00 pm. The clerk insisted that they had a 4:00 pm check-in, but we were still asked to wait a half hour! When I insisted that we wanted to check-in NOW, they finally located a cleaned room on the first floor. We got into the room and discovered that, for $169.50, we had a room overlooking the parking lot! I returned to the desk to request a room with a marina view. One of those rooms, just across the hall from ours, was clean and empty. No, she insisted, that room was for a patron who'd paid FULL price (just $9.00 more than what we paid). I offered to give her the $9 so that we could have the room, but she insisted that it was already booked. This was a MONDAY night, so it's doubtful the rooms were all booked. To get a good view, we were told that all that was available was a suite, for an additional $100 per night. WE were treated like 2nd class citizens, and the clerks at the desk were arrogant and unpleasant. Needless to say, we were disappointed, angry, and unhappy with the accomodations. A warning to all who think they're getting a "good deal" on Hotels. You get what you pay for. In this case, I believe we overpaid for what we got. Never again for this hotel OR for Hotels.

Nice Place!

Bay Club Hotel in Shelter Island is great place for a quick getaway. Our room was clean, spacious and had a great view. The complimentary breakfast was awesome! We only stayed one night but wished it was for a week. We highly recommend the Bay Club for those who are budget conscious with small children.

Pretty good Hotel

My Wife and I stayed at this Hotel during our trip to San Diego for the annual Comic Con. The location is pretty good; Just close enough to all of the main city attractions (Convention Center, Sea World, etc.) and just far enough away from the noise of the city.

The rooms were pretty good and spacious, however I am not sure that the bedspreads and blankets were properly cleaned. There was hair on the blankets. If that is there, I shutter to think of what a blacklight would find. The room had a refrigerator which was nice, but considering the price we paid for the room, a microwave would have been good too. We had gotten the Marina view which was pretty nice with the balcony, but beware. If you go in the Summer time, people lounge in the pool area all night and WILL keep you up if you have to get some sleep.

The Continental breakfast was delicious and impressive. There were an assortment of fruits, juices, and bagels. They also had eggs, sausages, bacon and the typical breakfast items. That was one of the best parts of the stay here.

Overall, the Hotel was very good. The staff was friendly, professional and accomodating. The location was great. We really enjoyed the ocean view by the pier. Just beware of some of the guests. This Hotel appears to be a retirement vacation spot for many elder Caucasian guests. My Wife and I are not Caucasian and we received many strange looks from the guests which was very uncomfortable. Hopefully, the next time around these individuals won't be there at the same time next year. We plan on making a return visit.

My husband and I spent last week at the Bay Club Hotel. We found our room - second floor overlooking the Marina - to be clean, quiet and comfortable, with all the ammenities we were looking for (frig., hairdryer, iron and board, coffee maker, etc.). The staff from the front desk, housekeeping, dining room and management all were helpful and all seemed glad we were there. The breakfast was delicious and varied every day. We found our dinners in the dining room beautiful to the eye and to the taste buds. We were planning to go on a 4 day cruise in September for my birthday....cancelled those plans as soon as we got home from the Bay Club and booked those 4 days back at the Bay Club....our new favorite place to relax.

Top Local Tips for San Diego

San Diego Old Town Trolley Tour This trolley tour picks up and delivers you back right to the hotel. It then travels around all the interesting spots in San Diego with an interesting narrative. The trolley comes every half hour, so you can get off, spend time sight-seeing, then get back on when you want. Our hotel offered a discount, so the $25 fare was well worth it. We especially enjoyed Coronado Island the Old Town.

Tip: San Diego Whale Watching The large Gray Whale population is running through from late Jan Feb to early March on its way to the Arctic. You probably would see a 'spouter' and never know what it is- unless you take one of the 5 or 6 harbour cruises. One of the best, is the Hornblower Co. Cruise. You can book online for the day you want. Tickets are non-refundable, but they will re-negotiate another day, should you be unable to use your tickets. The boats are more like large, seaworthy cruise vessels with 3 levels. Plenty of room for everyone. There are interiour spaces should you wish to warm up, or plenty of deck space to watch the sea action all around the boat. There are two cruises per day: the early morning 9:00 am and the 1:30pm departures. We took the afternoon, booking our lunches online as well. After all the hussle driving downtown and trying to find a parking place..you will have to pay about $10 to park in the lots across the street and there is quite a bit of walking to boat. We saw whales!!

A Few Places to Eat Check out Brigantine's Oyster Bar during happy hour (or anytime, for that matter!) you won't be disappointed.
