Historical Traveller Reviews of Bahia Resort Hotel

Expensive, but great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I wanted to have a nice place to stay for a family vacation in San Diego over Christmas holiday. The reviews for this resort seemed to be all over the place and I was a little apprehensive about what we would find. The Bahia Resort cost us about $250/night for a suite. While the accomodations are on the verge of needing a total makeover, the resort offers a great location for accessing the beach (a couple of blocks, easy walk), Sea World, and the rest of San Diego. The suite was spacious enough for a family of four. In my mind, the two nights we stayed there made for a special stay, unlike something that a cheaper hotel could offer. For one or two nights it was worth it, but beyond that it's too pricey. The staff was very courteous and helpful.

Thumbs Up

I was amaze by the service and location of this resort. I was in town for buisness so I did not get to enjoy much of it, but I would recoomend it. I had just a Standard Room, nothing biggy, but a great rate. Located within walking distance to the amusement park Belmont Park and the Ocean. Nice pool area, and private beach. I was also surprised to know they had FREE PARKING. The FREE boat cruise in the evenings was a plus. The staff was very freindly and helpful. Look forward to coming back.

We spent 2 weeks at the Bahia, and loved every minute. We originally requested a ground level suite as we were travelling with a toddler.
Unfortunately, due to the last week of summer, everything was taken. I grumbled at first when they advised I would be on the 3rd floor of a 5 floor building, however it was close to the pool which was another of my request. Let me tell you, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious and technically was only on the second floor as they count the ground as floor #1. Secondly, our room was situated as such that we overlooked the lobby and the cafe. Each night the cafe had live entertainment pertaining to a certain theme ie.. Mexican, Carribean, etc... it was awesome to sit on our balcony and take in the free entertain nightly. As well, the Bahia Belle paddle boat free to guest is a must. It was beautiful watching the sunset from on board. As we were there the last week in August there were many activities for kids.
Movies at the pool, science and craft programs. It's also a 2 minute drive to Sea World. about 1/2 block walk to the ocean, shops and restaurants as well as a boardwalk with a rollarcoaster and other rides. Awesome!!! Unfortunately, come Sept.1st their winter schedule begins, no kids programs, no bar/restaurant at the pool and no nightly entertainment. It also appears to be more of a business crowd with lots of conventions and weddings. All in all, it was excellent. We highly recommend it. It was clean, with friendly staff. We had a studio room with kitchen which was great for making our own meals, the food at the cafe was great too!!! We did notice a decline in service at the Cafe once the summer crowd departed. Like I said before once Sept. 1st hit, things did change....but none the less not enough for us to have anything to complain about. We had a wonderful time and would definately return. We've been home only 1 1/2 weeks and miss it terribly. Two thumbs up for this hotel! Great for kids of all ages!

Old, dirty, smelly, loud

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a disapointment. We went over 4th of July weekend and paid $400 a night for a crappy room. Rooms were old, dated and smelly. The only perk I thought would be watching the kids play on the sandy bay while I sat on the patio nearby. Wrong! The dropoff made it impossible for them to play there. Full of partying, loud, tatooed young drunks over the 4th of July. Looked like 10 shared a room to pay for it. Doors slamming all night, car beeps. Not the family vacation we had hoped for, the beach was dirty to boot! We ended up coming home early.

Not bad

Fantastic location & the grounds are lovely. The room (admittedly a garden view) wasn't the best & I thought it overpriced for what is it.
The staff were friendly & the bar a nice place tpo relax. I'd go again but only if the rooms were under $100 a night

Always a Great Experience

We have stayed at the Bahia several times since 2000, and we love it there. The location is incredible...everything you love about San Diego is close by...the beach, marina, sea world, etc. The rooms are overpriced, but again, you're paying for a great location.

We have stayed at other places in San Diego, but always seem to come back to the Bahia.

t waste your money!

We picked the Bahia because we have 2 small children and wanted a room that you could walk right out to the beach for the kids to play. I wish we had known that the "beach" had a 4-foot drop off to the water. What a disappointment.

Check in time was supposed to be 4:00 p.m. We had arrived early and were told by the front desk that we could check in at 1:00, then they changed it to 3:00, then we were going to be happy to settle for 4:00.
At 4:40 p.m., we were finally able to get into our room (with a cranky 1 year old and 3 year old who where awake since 4 a.m. to get on the plane to San Diego). We paid about $200 per night for a standard beach front room with 2 double beds. The "spacious" room was very small, with no table or chairs to eat on. The drawers and closet smelled so badly of mildew that we couldn't store any of our clothes in them. The shower head in the bathtub was very low, so unless you are under 5 feet tall, get ready for some back strain every time you shower. The tub lever broke during the stay, and our call requesting maintenance was ignored making it imposible to give the kids a bath. Our "private patio" was right next a busy walkway to the beach, so it was anything but private.
The remote control for the TV would only work if you turned off the lights (as explained to us by maintenance). The hotel was the only bad part of our vacation. Think twice (or more) before staying there.

Had a good time at the Bahia

My husband and I spent two nights at the Bahia and loved our room. It faced the bay and was quiet. We also enjoyed the Bahia Belle which takes you across the bay. We rented bikes at "Cheap Rentals" which is in walking distance and rode around the bay and the oceanfront of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Also there is a roller coastal only one block away at the beach boardwalk. It is a wooden roller coaster and it was fun to ride. Fun place for couples or families.

Bahia=Noisy, Sleepless Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked a trip to Legoland & Sea World using a travel package. The Dana Inn & Marina was an option but we made the mistake of "upgrading" to the Bahia Resort & Hotel. At check-in, we were told our bayside room (#213) was a complimentary upgrade. Weren't we lucky! Because the drive through the complex is one-way, most cars had to pass by both the front and backside of our room and the parking is in front of each unit like a motel. We were treated to the relentless beeping of keyless entries, doorslamming and engines starting up. It was like a Motel 6. One branch of the drive was being ripped up and resurfaced (May 03) so we had construction noise as well. This property is also affected by large plane noise. In addition we found broken glass all over the floor & patio, one TV didn't work, one phone was on the fritz and the bathroom sink wouldn't drain properly. Although the help was friendly & responsive, we were inconvenienced by three repair visits and a vacuum job. We checked out a day early. This was the only bummer part of our family vacation.

nicce but nosy

from A TripAdvisor Member
The location is excellent. The views and access to the water can't be beat. The staff were excellent and very friendly. Now for the problems. The rooms are old and the design of the building makes for lots of noise. During our weekend stay there were three weddings and people pretty much kept us up the entire night for two out of three night. Parking is right next too your room causing cars to pull in and out 24 hours a day, With that comes lots of doors slamming and car alarms that easily penetrate the single pain trailer windows. If your going as a single or couple to party on the beach it's a great place but if your older or have a family I would suggest staying else where.
