I do not have the actual figures here so I will approximate them. When I checked out of the Country Plaze in San Clemente, the hotel charged me for the room. They charged me (roughly) $75/night for my 2 night stay. I thought (having never used hotels.com before) that it was normal to pay the hotel, which then, in turn, paid the hotels.com their commission. When I received my AMEX bill, both the hotels $150 dollar charge AND the hotels.com charge (which was more like $95/night) were on it. It took me some time to get the double billing corrected, and in the end, I paid the higher hotels.com charge, not the actual, lower amount charged me directly by the hotel.

Initially the hotel was a little difficult to get to. It sits behind a shopping center and is accessed through that parking lot. When we pulled in, we were very pleasantly surprised. The hotel was lovely, newly remodeled, with an authentic feel to the decor, rather than the standard fake hotel decorations. The staff was incredibly helpful, even printing maps and schedules off the internet for the event we were traveling to see (the swallows at Capistrano) and they provided excellent directions to our destinations and explained how the shuttle system worked. The room was well equipped. The beds especially were of a higher quality than generally expected at this type of hotel. We slept incredibly well. Our view faced the freeway, but the vegetation leading up to the freeway was so incredible, that it didn't even matter. We didn't get a noise from the freeway either.
