Loud, great location, Loud, Noisy, Loud

from A TripAdvisor Member
LOUD! Under construction, and Loud-
New rooms are not great- toilet runs all night, shower drips, walls are thin etc..... and did I mention it's LOUD?
The location is amazing, especially if you are in an oceanfront room.
Sunsets are so beautiful, this is the only reason to stay here, bring your camera-
Seals can be very loud, but I thought that was cool-
$15 add'l parking fee is outrageous.

A bit Dissappointed Construction

from A TripAdvisor Member
Family was there for my sons 12th bday on April 6th ,2006
**The hotel is under construction and that was never once mentioned when I made room reservation.
**I called the hotel directly to make the reservations.
*It should have been mentioned..giving me the option. There was also a wedding that was teking place which meant that the swimming pool was off limits to hotel guests until after 700pm..
This should have also been mentioned,or offering a small discount on the room
**The photographer was extremely rude and wanted us all to move from view.. All we were doing was trying to bring in our luggage
and check in.. We are paying guests at 300.00 a night-with no
breakfast and should not have to be disrespected by anyone in the wedding party. The rooms were clean and the views were beautiful.
There is a cove that separates the full ocean from hotel but nice..
They do add lots of extras to the room so please make sure the extras like-teddy bear- robes-hats-etc. are all accounted for before staying the night. The person before you may have taken something and
you will have to proof that you didnt take they extra expensive items from the room.

It is an older hotel that smells of old mildew in the
dark=-small and narrow hallways but does change to a positive when you enter the cute cozy rooms with balconies. 3rd floor is a must..

Hotel Portofino under construction - not worth it

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel should warn its guests that it is under construction. According to another hotel guest, it was under construction 3 years ago as well. The entire lobby is out of commission, so you can't enjoy the view. One half of the hotel is being remodeled and toilets, furniture, etc is left out on balconies. The other half will be remodeled when first half is finished. There was no bellman on duty when we arrived, hotel engineer had to finally help with bags. Paint fumes, construction noise was umpleasant. Bathrooms were filthy, moldy, and outdated. No towels at pool; and pool furniture was skimpy. Truly, they should knock it down and rebuild. This structure has been here for at least 35 years as I grew up in area. What a disappointment to visit my hoemtown with my family and then have to switch hotels -- we went to Newport Beach to get completely out of the area.

Ocean View Jacuzzi Suite

from Carna
For a quick local weekend getaway, this is the place. You actually get a jacuzzi in your room, not a jacuzzi tub, plus a partial view of the ocean. It's walking distance to the Crab Shack, Cheesecake Factory, Samba, Kincaids & Rubys. Their own restaurant, Breakwater, is very intimate - food is good (seabass is very moist), but for ambience, I prefer the Charthouse 'cause it's actually overlooking the ocean, not the marina.

The room does need updating, but the decor is not bad. The bed are very restful, not uncomfortable. Parking fee is $15, so-so, considering the pier's rate is less than that...but in comparison to SF Fisherman's Wharf of $30, it's not that bad.

Overall, if you're looking for a jacuzzi room with a partial ocean view in the southbay area, this is it. If you want romance, book a gondala ride with it - picks you up at the Samba restaurant.

Excellent hotel

from antonteddybear
They gave us an ocean view room. I loved it. I walked into a room that faces the yacht club, and I couldn't see the parking lot unless I went right to the window and looked down. They had free internet, free bicycle rental. It's on a prime piece of property here. They have weddings every weekend, so it can't be a dump. I looked really hard to find the dirty stuff that some people were talking about. I couldn't find anything filthy or dirty. The ceramic walls in the bathroom had some chips, but there was no mold or dirt. It was VERY clean as far as I am concerned. I didn't hear any noise at night from the sea lions.. The sea lions have to sit on something, and there is a rock a long way away from the hotel where one was sitting, but if you shut the sliding door you can't hear it. I doubt it is possible for a bunch of sea lions to be under your balcony making noise,,, it's just not physically possible. They had beautiful Christmas decorations up. The workers were extremely nice to us. I am very suspicious about negative postings about this place. It is NOT a luxury hotel. It's a normal hotel that is expensive because where it is located. ALL hotels cost a lot of money on the ocean in the LA area. Don't be afraid to stay here. Anton Anderssen, Warren Michigan

What a Dump

from travelpalooza
My family recently stayed at this overpriced filthy hotel and vowed never to return but to also warn others via tripadvisor as soon as we returned home.

The room: VERY small - we had to rearrange the desk and chairs to make more room and feel like we were getting our moneys worth, dirty carpets (kids socks were tar black), dirty patio. Dated decor but trying to go for the B&B look - more like just "old" look. Comfortable beds but sheets kept coming off, revelaing a filthy matress. Things all over the room to purchase such as teddy bear for $25 - go figure. Small tv. Room smelled of mildew, dust and stench from marina.

The bathroom: was not cleaned, had hair (not the kind on your head) in the bathtub. Asked housecleaning to clean but all they did was empty the garbage. Called again and watched as housekeeping cleaned - all she did was take a piece of tissue and pick up the hair, YUCK!!! Needless to say, we were freaked out about showering in there! Mold on the walls, grime in the tub, calking chipping and molding, peeling wall-paper, old fixtures, cabinets painted over to look clean, dirty tile floors with craks in them, mildew smell galore - need I go on?

Staff: Very unclear about $15 parking. We were here for a wedding and some guests paid some didn't. The smart guests clued in that if you didn't mention having a car they wouldn't charge you. So if you make the FOOLISH decision to stay here, say you got dropped off. They won't tow your car because they have no idea or system of how to keep track. Just a ploy to get more $ when they can. When I asked for a late check-out I was told they exceeded their limit for the day. Unwilling to settle for "no" after our horrible experience I later asked another desk person who simply said "yes" - so I guess they each make their own rules.

Food/Catering: The restaurant across the way "Breakaway" was really good with great prices. The catering for the wedding on the other hand was horrible!!!! BRIDES and GROOMS beware if you choose this venue for your wedding reception. The overpriced lobster and steak ($70 plate) was dry, bland, more like boring, and served cold. One waiter was very rude - yelled at my son. Scolded him by saying "Get out of the way! Go sit down! I don't want to see your face until I'm done!" My son was near tears and was docile from that point on and didn't care about enjoyng the reception.

PORTOFINO I hope you review this. You're a horrible establishment.

In a nutshell - save your hard -earned money. Stay just a few feet away at the other two hotels which look clean, modern and reasonably priced because it's not near the sewage smelling marina.

Bad Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I called the hotel directly to find out more about room ammenities, & I was told that they have mini-ref, bathrobes, patio/balcony overlooking the marina, free internet access, etc. What they have was a locked mini-bar, no bathrobes, balcony overlooking the parking lot which was noisy at times & the sliding door doesn't lock. Because my wife is pregnant, I requested a room closest to elevator, instead we were given the farthest room on the top floor close to the stairs. The problems were never resolved even after we complained. This hotel has pleasing decor but lacks service. The hotel's clerk had no knowledge of the surrounding areas. They like to charge for everything: parking, internet access, etc. Also no video/photo allowed of the hotel. The manager practically kicked us out of the lobby because I was taking video of my wife.

Bad service AND unclean

from tukadoog
I booked multiple rooms for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. When we arrived, I was informed there was a mix up with the reservations...end of story. The guy disappeared. I understand mistakes happen, but no explanation...no, "Let me work this out, I'll be right back." No, please have a drink at the bar and we will come get you when we correct the error" Nothing but a back walking away. After 15 minutes of standing there, I asked someone else to help me. It was resolved and we didn't have to pay the $15.00 parking fee for each room (per my request for the inconvenience).
I get to the room and my daughter says "please tell me that you were in the bathroom, because there is a doody in the toilet". Again, I understand plumbing problems happen. But, if this room was recently cleaned, should this happen?
I will not go back. Good service and housekeeping is important to me. Proper handling of the situations could have changed my opinion. No communication doesn't.

Loved this Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I almost didn't stay at the Portofino because of the reviews, this is one time I'm glad I took a chance.. I loved it .. the service was great and the rooms was cozy. It is a older hotel so the carpets aren't new or drapes but everything was clean and the people was wonderful... Check in was quick and the girl at the desk for just wonderful ...I would love to spend another vacation there... Thanks Portofino Hotel and Redondo for a great vacation!!

Think twice....

from A TripAdvisor Member
Confusion abounds at the Portofino Inn. Through the hotel I booked an oceanview corner king room with jacuzzi tub for 3/19/05 at the rate of $249. Upon arrival at 2:40pm, was told that the room was not ready yet; hotel had been sold out the night before and housekeeping was behind. We were asked to come back in 30 - 60 minutes and room 'should' be ready. My husband and I came back at 4:00pm (1 hour 20 minutes later) and spoke with a different front desk clerk. First we were told that the room still was not ready, then the story changed. My husband asked if they could check with housekeeping to give us an estimate of when the room would be ready. Upon checking, the clerk told us that they wouldn't have the room available afterall but could offer us an ocean view room (not as large as the one booked and without a jacuzzi) for the rate of $169. We asked what happen to our room and no one seemed to know. The story about being sold out the night before was offered again but we weren't sure how that applied. We were then told that someone may have extended their stay in that room or that it might have been given to another guest. As a side note, another person checking in at the same time we were had the same experience. They reserved an ocean view double and were told there was only a king available. This was a problem for them as there were 4 people who needed two beds.
We decided to take the ocean view room afterall. What a disappointment! This hotel is past it's prime. The bedroom was small although decorated nicely, the bathroom was another story. Clearly it has not been updated in 20+ years. Very dated and run down looking, old chipped tile, etc.
To further add to the confusion, the front desk called our room and were surprised to have the phone answered. It seems that they had no one registered to our room.
We will not go back to this hotel and would not recommend it.
