Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach Marina Hotel

Fine place, a little overpriced

from HoosierBuff
We stayed here in february for a wedding. The hotel was not bad. . .was generally clean, a little dated. Given the other options in Santa barbara, this is an OK choice, though ultimately, the Portofino may be a better selection and more intimate.

The room was a little dated and the bathrooms were average. Had no problems at all with the staff.

The location is good, but the portofino (in redondo) is a little better since its a little further off the main road, and it is in the harbor itself (and has a nice bar and restaurant)

As for redondo overall, its a nice place to stay when in LA, but, I don't know if this is a good place to vacation.

I was treated like a cheat and a liar.

I reserved a room in December 2005 on my company's travel website. We have a corporate rate with this hotel. I awake at 3AM to get to the airport and check in by 5 AM. I fly two hours to LAX. When I arrive at my office I work until after 6 PM and by the time I get to then hotel I am exhausted. The desk clerk told me she was going to give me a better room and I signed and initialled the rate that appeared to be higher that usual. I checked on the rate before check out and the rate was less than the rate that I was provided by the desk clerk at check in. I questioned it at check out and the clerk found a lower rate for my company and went to discuss it with his manager and she, the manager, pointed out that I signed for the rate. She wasn't interested in the fact that the corporation has a lower rate or the fact that the desk clerk at check in probably sold my room before I checked in when I had it reserved by credit card. She as much as insinuated that I had stayed in the more expensive room by deception. I always stay in the ocean view rooms which are the same price for me company as the side of the hotel with no view. I cancelled my stay for the following week and will not return until this is made right for me. It's the principal and the snotty attitude of the manager. It used to me that the customer was always right and now it seems that the customer is never right. I can stay at just about any hotel I care to and so Crowne Plaza has lost my business. I spend over $50,000.00 annually on hotels alone.

View was Great!

from travelsande
I had a great view of the harbor with a nice balcony. Took a few sunset photos that turned out great.
Only complaint I have of the room is the door on the bathroom should be designed better.
That and I would have liked at least a 4 cup coffee pot, the single cup wasn't as convient.
Didn't use the pool, hottub or tennis courts, but they looked great on top of the garage roof, it made another great view of the harbor.
It's location was great near the restaurants and Redondo Beach Pier, made easy walking.
I would stay again, maybe my next high school reunion!

Well worth a visit

from Coupe-man
A good location if you want the balance of access to Los Angeles, LAX and the beaches. The staff were very friendly and efficient and hotel facilities good, the restaurant is not brilliant but you have a great choice of restaurants all within walking or taxi distance. The executive upgrade option is worth taking, the executive common room is pleasant. Bedrooms are good if a little “dull” in respect of décor and the bathroom doors are novel, it’s like walking into a cupboard. The beds are a feature that they make a selling point and in fairness are excellent.
The concierge, we used, was exceptional with great knowledge and a really great way of dealing with clients requests, with objective views.
We booked in early and this was not a problem and were offered a choice of rooms with different facilities. Front desk very good. Hotel shop has good range of goods.
Pool area is excellent with good views over the ocean. Parking is charged by the day with a $3 premium for valet parking. You get complimentary membership of Golds Gym which is next door. The hotel has a mix of business and leisure clients so during the day is very relaxing as a lot of people are away on business.
Overall a good hotel.

Great Location, Great Staff, pleasant Stay

from npm72851
For the location and price, this hotel was a good choice. Rooms are clean and inviting, beds were very comfortable and staff was accomodating and friendly. The hotel also has a very nice restaurant and full service spa. We walked to the pier for dinner which was short distance from the hotel.

However, the hotel service was slow because of understaffing. We waited over an hour for pool towels, and though there seemed to be pool side food service, we never saw a waiter during the time we were there (approximately 2 hours). There was also a wedding party that stayed up late and kept us up late too.

Evenso, hotel staff more than compensated us for our small inconveniences by giving us a discount, and assuring us that the management is iworking on hiring more staff.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay and we will return.

Not bad

from ToandLo
The hotel staff was very nice and helpful. They gave us an early check in and parking was not bad although you have to pay for it each night of your stay. The hotel is in a great location because you can walk to the pier and have a good variety of restaurants nearby. Lobby is nice and the public restrooms are clean. The beds were comfortable but my only complaint is the condition of the bathroom. It is dated a bit. As written in other reviews, the bathroom doors are kind of old and it makes you feel like you are closing closet doors. Although our room was very clean, the mold in some of the grout made it feel like it was dirty. The lighting in the bathroom is substandard. I had to open the curtains and do my make up by the window at the desk in order to see what I was doing. We normally stay at Best Western type hotels so we were expecting a little more out of the Crowne Plaza regarding the room. Overall it was average but not bad.

Hotel was Average

The staff was very nice at the Crowne Plaza, however, the rooms were very disappointing. The hotel sits directly across the street from the pier; however, the rooms are run down compared to the other hotels we stayed in. On the up side, the room was clean and the hotel is close to the airport (7 miles).

Great bed! Will definitely stay again...

We were delighted with the quality beds at the Crowne Plaza as well as the service. We stayed for two nights in May with our infant son and found the staff to be accommodating and friendly, putting us in a quiet corner of the hotel with a partial ocean view, as requested. Proximity to LAX was a plus--roughly 15 minutes from rental counter to hotel check-in. Valet parking was well worth the $16 per night ($13 to self-park); call ahead and they'll have the vehicle waiting when you arrive downstairs. Gold's Gym is next door, and workouts are included in the room price--treadmills with an ocean view. We took several walks around the neighborhood and loved the lagoon (perfect for small children.)

Food is available at the hotel restaurant or within walking distance--we ate dinner at Kincaid's on the pier, YUM. Room service (breakfast) was outstanding and quick. My husband loved the pool, especially the bucket of beer delivered to him poolside. There's a grocery store and drugstore around the corner--important for those with kids, as the hotel gift shop does not carry diaper wipes. Most importantly, the bed was outstanding! Best part of our stay! I'm seriously considering purchasing the Sleep Advantage components from their website.

On the negative side, the hotel layout is a bit awkward with only one elevator servicing the center of the U-shaped hotel, which means a bit of walking to the rooms away from the elevator. The room had some cosmetic issues--peeling paint in one corner, and stained curtains. Had I paid full price (quoted at roughly $190/night) I might have downgraded my rating. However, because of our excellent flight + hotel deal, overlooking the cosmetic flaws is easy.

I would highly recommend this hotel to travelers looking for a peaceful LA getaway on the waterfront.

Worth your time

Stayed here for 2 nights (weekend) and loved it. Rooms were clean and offered an ocean view! The included breakfast buffett was great. I will be staying here again. For the price (about $150 per night) I'll give it a 9 out of 10.

Disappointing

from Shirley/John
We were disappointed as this hotel did not measure up by a long way to the standard of other Crown Plaze hotels we stayed at - in London, New York, Amsterdam and several others around the UK. We stayed there twice and booked a sea view executive room on both occasions but it was only a partial seaview since the bedroom was on the siding on the sea rather than facing it. The bedroom was a reasonable size with a wonderfully comfortable king sized bed but the furnishings were drab and poor quality - the bathroom door was tacky and not what we would expect to see in a quality hotel. The executive lounge was being refurbished and the temporary one in a gutted bedroom was not quite an adequate substitute. Reception was unwelcoming on both stays - not what we wanted after a long flight. One of the concierges seemed hostile when I went to see him and only mellowed when he realised I wanted to book a tour. Though the hotel has a seafront location, it is virtually next to some sort of industrial complex which spoils the ambience somewhat. On the plus side, the little shop in the lobby had what we needed and was open later in the evening when we first arrived so it was there when we needed it . The staff in the executive lounge were very pleasant and accommodating. The two female concierges were very helpful in undertaking little chores for us. We enjoyed dining at the restaurant on both occasions as the food was tasty and the service good but there were also several interesting restaurants nearby. We were pleased to be given a room when we checked in at 10.00 in the morning on our second stay - we were expecting to have to leave our bags with the bell captain. Also there were complimentary shuttles to two shopping malls for those requiring retail therapy. Complimentary membership of a very comprehensive gym virutally next door was also a bonus. On the whole though, we won't be staying there again as we value well furnished bedrooms like we've found in executive rooms in other hotels in the Crowne Plaza group.
