Beautiful Hotel - will return

This hotel is in an absolutely stunning location. The rates are considerably lower than usual so I'm feeling forgiving of some of the (few) issues we had. Had problems with TV remote - fixed IMMEDIATELY! S-l-o-w food service at the pool on father's day, but otherwise stay was wonderful. We got a ridiculously low introductory rate so I didn't mind witnessing some of the growing pains. The staff was very helpful and kind, going so far as to give us a 4pm check-out. We had a great breakfast at the Catalina restaurant - and we spent hours in the pool area. Great place to go if you are going to park the car and stay awhile.

$13.00 plastic cup of wine....took over 45 mins to get!

Nelson's was a beautiful location, however not a beautiful experience. We also had the waitress with short shorts showing her crack and tramp stamp. The service was terrible two glasses of wine served in plastic cups took 45 minutes to be delivered and the kicker was the price! $ 12.00 dollars each for mediocre wine. We had to seat ourselves, ask for a menu three times, and turn on the space heater....so much for so called service. Absolute chaos!

The vibe is no one over thirty works here and it SHOWS! This place will go down fast, no one in charge and no one with any experience, and NO ONE CARES! In and Out Burger has better service, and a better looking staff. Whoever was in charge of the hiring failed miserably. A resort cannot soar on location only. PV locals are a tough group, that is why so few restaurants survive on the hill. All I can say is management you better take note, because word around these parts spreads like wildfire....bad service and terrible value just won't do!

We stayed at this hotel just a week after it opened. I could dwell on some minor service complaints, but my guess is that this will improve once the staff becomes more experienced. Let me focus more on the fundamentals. First, the location is great. For those who live/work in LA, this is a very accessible weekend get-away, even factoring in traffic. The resort is high on a cliff overlooking the ocean and has spectacular views from just about anywhere. We booked two rooms, one of them ocean-front, and were not disappointed with the view -- we saw dolphins swimming by one evening-really gorgeous. Our second room was ocean view, and also had a spectacular view, although it was a bit further from the ocean.
The main reason we probably would not return is the cost. This place really sticks it to you, from the $25/night "resort fee" to $30/night parking to $13 for the cheapest glass of wine. Furthermore, the resort is a good 5-7 miles away from any other retail/restaurants so it's not so easy just to go outside the hotel for meals. They are running a half-price promotion on the rooms now, but if they go to full price it will be very expensive and not, in my opinion, worth the cost. There are some nice pools on the property, but no ocean swimming due to very rocky beaches. This is a nice, romantic get-away if you don't mind spending the mega-bucks. But for a family, it is too expensive.

Terrible and overrated --save money for other luxury resorts

First of all, property was amazing and rooms were quite comfortable. Service and food was overpriced and we were underwhelmed. The food was tasteless and it took forever to get served. Housekeeping walked in on us even though there was a do not disturb sign. Very embarrassing! By far the worst thing that we dealt with was an incident at the lap pool. Even though we were told at the beginning of our stay, that the lap pool was available for everyone, apparently it was not. After making ourself comfortable, the pool boy explained that this pool was only for Terranea spa guests but that he would "let us stay for a while" ,however ,he did not stop there, he had to add that the "spa guests" were spending a lot of money and we better be on our best behavior. Embarrassing I felt like I was being lectured by my parents except I am 44 and the pool boy was about 18. Oh, and
apparently my money is not as well received as the spa guests. Save your money and stay at the RITZ AT HALF-MOON BAY OR POST RANCH INN AT BIG SUR.

First week = some errors

Stayed here for a wedding during the first week the hotel was open. Location is great (former grounds of Marine Land) and the rooms are very well appointed with attention to detail. We did run into some issues – room reservations went missing, rooms without TV remote, towels, shampoo, soap, working telephone, internet upon arrival. Staff hustled to correct issues but seemed overwhelmed and unsure of actions to take. That being said, the staff overseeing the reception was attentive and top-notch. Jason (I think) the manager supervising the event seemed experienced and was able to direct the staff through a few snags.

Net/net – the resort is running an opening special that helps to make up for the occasional issue and the staff is quick to correct mistakes. Well worth the ½ off room pricing through June if you can take a deep breath and enjoy the resort. Not recommended for divas during the next few weeks as they iron out opening glitches.

Local day tripper / not impressed

My husband and I decided to stop in to check out the hotel. As my husband says, I am a tough critic. We had lunch at the Catalina restaurant. It took a long time to get our drinks as the bartender was busy fixing some machinery. When the wine finally showed up it was corked (house chardonnay). Our waiter Jeff was great and upgraded our wine and served it super quick. The food, chicken for husband and pasta for me was unremarkable. The salt and pepper shakers did not even work. . We walked the grounds. Need to wait for the foliage to grow in for the beauty. Some cigarette butts in the garden, not their fault but should be looked after. Tire marks in the gardens where the staff missed the sidewalk. Stopped at Nelsons, new staff and not 5 star. One waitress had her shorts too low and was showing crack from behind, and no it was not pretty or sexy , I am surprised mgmt did not correct. In a 5 star hotel I do not expect to see that. The bartenders were not attentive enough for the caliber of this hotel and one person's shirt was not pressed. Being it was the first week I know they have adjustments to make, but it is a really bad start. It did not seem elegant and did not impress. It felt like a bad Marriot. I was very disappointed for my 1st visit. We are going to try the local special to say overnight in a few months and hope it has sorted itself out by then.

Terranea Resort offers guests seven dining options including Nelson’s a casual eatery where guests can enjoy approachable yet refined pub fare in a laid-back atmosphere accentuated by an outdoor fireplace and the incredible natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean. While staff is dressed in apparel from Quiksilver the popular surf wear brand, I agree that ill-fitting uniforms are inappropriate and have shared your comment with restaurant management who have already addressed/corrected the situated. Terranea appreciates our guests feedback in order to improve upon our quality and service.

Beautiful location; resort still working out kinks

My boyfriend and I arrived on the third day that the resort was open. I had booked an ocean view bungalow, and much to my dismay, when we arrived to our room it was on the first floor with an open patio that had a next to nothing view with double beds. Apparently the room was entered in the system as one king bed, so they were gracious enough to upgrade us to an ocean front room, ableit not a bungalow room. Our room was comfortable and had a great view although it was missing some basic items such as an in-room menu, extra towels (only had one), and housecleaning request sign. We had dinner at Catalina Kitchen on the first night, and although we had reservations we were not seated in the half-empty restaurant until 20 minutes later when I asked how much longer, at which the hostess seated us immediately because she had forgotten to put our name in the system. Our waitress was incredibly slow (our dinner experience was over an hour and a half) and forgot to bring us some bread. The breakfast buffet was great and the best deal ($24 per person) as a bowl of oatmeal alone is $12. We had the bed & breakfast package which allows for $60 of credit for breakfast a day. The next night we dined at Nelson's, which was not as awe-inspiring as on the website. The food was so-so although the fondue dessert was definitely worth it. Upon checking out, I noticed that they tried to charge me valet parking, breakfast, and another random restaurant charge even though parking and breakfast is included in the B&B package. Extra charges almost totaled a whopping $200, so check your bill carefully upon checking out. Overall, I had an amazing time at the resort. The staff was extremely friendly and professional, although at times sub-par from lack of experience. I'm not sure if the service provided to us was sub-par because of our age (we were definitely the youngest couple there), but I'll turn a blind eye this time. I'm sure the resort will improve in time!

Incredible!!! Beautiful location, outstanding dining options!

This is truly one of the most beautiful settings along the Southern California coastline. We arrived the day after they had just opened and it was very busy with paying guests and people just looking around out of curiosity. Everyone we spoke with was awe struck by the magnificent beauty of the setting and the wonderful architecture. The spa was out of this world!!! We have traveled all over the globe and this is definitely one of the most elegant spas we've experienced. The resort staff is gracious, friendly and, given the fact that this was their first weekend operating, did a masterful job dealing with the crowds of curious while making guests feel comfortable at the same time.

Not OCEAN FRONT views

After booking an OCEAN FRONT suite, we were shown to a first floor room facing the family pool. Ocean FRONT in their website states "overlooking the breaking waves of the Pacific" What a lie! The reservation people told me that several rooms and suites are facing the ocean directly west, out onto the ocean, but those can't be reserved. Must be the perks given to the CITY COUNCIL members who voted to give Terranea an 8 million dollar bail out.
Also:
Landscaping - unfinished
Decor - nowhere NEAR the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton caliber of comfort or style, not even Marriott
Coastal Access - you better be in incredible shape to hike down the cliff and back uphill if you want to walk on rocks (no beach)
I was so looking forward to this new place. I'm embarrassed that I told people about how great it will be, and horrible sad that I had to put my family through this crappy experience. Live and learn.

During our Grand Opening Weekend our front desk did their best to accommodate everyone’s requests, unfortunately, due to a number of special events our most coveted rooms were secured prior. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Our landscape may appear to be unfinished, but part of the botanical renaissance undertaken at Terranea was planting nearly 14 acres of natural Coastal Sage Scrub habitat, re-creating the indigenous California coastal terrain and providing a welcoming environment for some of our rarer visitors like the El Segundo Blue Butterfly and the California Gnatcatcher. Also our devotion to this irreplaceable land is evident by 45 beautiful, mature trees seen around the property. They were planted more than a half century ago as part of Marineland of the Pacific’s initial development of the site. The trees were carefully boxed and nursed on site during Terranea’s construction, and lovingly replanted throughout the Resort.

While not situated directly on the typical sandy beaches Southern California is known for, we are poised on the bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula overlooking the Pacific, our three unique swimming pools are all designed to offer spectacular views. In addition, a path along our Discovery Trails will lead guests down to Terranea Cove, where chairs and umbrellas are available for rent.

Spectacular - Great Get Away!!!

We stayed in an ocean front bungalow with truly spectacular views! 1,100 sq. feet kitchen, laundry, indoor and outdoor fireplace. We choose to have most of our meals in-room so we we’re able to stay away from the crowds and tours. The resort is huge with so many things to offer couples and families: the beach, tide pools, walking trails, outdoor fireplaces, 9 hold golf course, the pool and water slide. The staff we’re very friendly and helpful. We arrived June 12th opening day at 5:30pm and waited only 15 minutes to be taken to our room. Sunday we ate breakfast in the Catalina and the buffet was very good with lots of choices. The room and linens we’re 5 star and don’t forget your ipod they have a docking station. This property is where Marine Land used to be – it is just pristine and the resort looks as though it’s always been there. Some great restaurants but don’t forget the walking trails and the restaurants are open to the public so it is crowded!! We we’re there to relax so we didn’t try Mar’sel – requires a coat/slacks for men. However we did try Sea Beans – great place for coffee and snacks

Catalina – Casual with a great selection overlooking the resort pool.
