Comfortable and Cozy

from A TripAdvisor Member
Cottage Inn By the Sea delivers exactly what the name implies. My oceanfront room was comfortable and cozy. The fog was in so I can only imagine what this room and experience would have been like without fog. The room had a convenient refrigerator for refreezing my cooler ice and for keeping cool the food I was traveling with for day snacks. It also had a microwave. The lovely ocean view accompanied a warm decor. This was most certainly my home away from home even though it was a bit more fufu. I was impressed the next day when I saw the manager walking around the property caring for each and every plant and checking out the entire presentation. The staff were always friendly, courteous and welcoming. Try will like it.

Nice, but some problems

Generally nice, but as of 8/9/2004, the stairs to the beach are still closed. Breakfast was offerred, but the only hot food available was a waffle. The have one waffle iroan available that cooks one waffle at at time. Hard to handle a morning rush at 1 wafffle every three minutes.

A pleasant time...

The cottage inn was clean and quiet. We found our room to be comfortable and clean -- furthermore, although on the first floor, we did not hear our neighbors at all -- very nice if you're the type that enjoys a little privacy and quiet. The continental breakfast wasn't spectacular but it was it did the job and definitely went beyond the tray of pastries and the juice and coffee containers you get at some places. As far as beach access goes, it is true that there is no direct access from the hotel, but the beach is just around the corner -- it is hardly inconvenient if you're able to walk a short distance... To top it off, there are nice places to eat in the immediate vicinity, etc. Overall, while a bit pricey, I found it hard to complain - we enjoyed the place...

Highly disappointed. No room service/ No Dining/No beach access/ Entry to your room is from outside.

The web site is somewhat decieving. As were the "Highly Rated" opinions. You are lead to believe that this "motel" is prestine and one of the best places to stay. Well let me tell you, the room with the full ocean view (Rm 421, the suite) is small. Yes, you do have a view of the the ocean, and a view of the "unkept" garden/sitting area. Your view is through three small windows. There was trash and beer cans in the garden area. Access to this area is available to Non-guest too.

The bedding was not clean. There were large throw pillows on the bed, which were obviously used by other guest, to sleep on, lounge on, etc..These pillows were leaning against the "clean" pillows we were expected to sleep on. The bedspread had some strange spots on it. There were loose hairs in the bath tub. The wicker chairs in the room also had seating pillows, with loose hairs on them. We did not use the pool or spa, but as we looked at it, we noticed sand at the bottom of both.

I read in one review that the beach access was closed due to the unsafe stairway, it still is, closed! So needless to say, in order to go to the beach, we had to go to the neighboring motel, and gain access there. If it was not for the long drive there, we would have left immediately and headed back home. Our intention was to stay 2 nights, we stayed for just the one night.

The scenery and beach is Beautiful, there is so much potential for a truly 5 star rated Resort/Hotel in the area. Such a shame there isn't one. There was one positive experience, the ladys at the front desk were nice and helpful. The contenintal breakfast was fine. If you want to eat, you have to travel into town our go to the Marie Callendars down the street. I truly wish I had something better to say about our stay. Cleanliness had alot to do with this "opinion/review". Our observations were not exaggerated.

Great Location and very cozy

from Mark_Bayarea
The cottage inn is in an excellent location, with a breathtaking cliff-view overlooking Pismo Beach. There were stairs for beach access, but unfortunately they were blocked off due to the ocean's toll on the old stairs. The free continental breakfast was also a plus, with a do-it-yourself waffle maker. The only snag in our great experience was with a gentleman at the front desk who tried to give us one of the three rooms adjacent to the freeway. We kindly asked for a different room but he said they were all booked. Upon entering the "freeway room", we saw that there were 2 twins instead of the king bed we requested. He immediately changed our room, even after saying that "no more rooms were available". An "excellent" rating would have been given if the gentleman at the front desk had not lied to us during our initial check in. Great place for kids, too. They'll enjoy the pool w/ the ocean view.

Beautiful location

My husband and I stayed here over Memorial weekend, and absolutely loved it. Our room with full ocean view was wonderful. The staff was very nice and helpfull and we will defenitely go back again. The breakfast was a little dissapointing as it didn't have many healthy choices, but nonetheless a great place to stay.

All in all I was very pleased as compared to The cheaper hotels . I appreciated the breakfeast that we recived. I would really come back if I didn't live so far away.We enjoyed our stay!

We stayed here last year and are returning this summer. The location is great: on a high cliff with stairs descending to the beach, lots of beach front with caves. Beautiful sunsets. Rooms are large, clean and attractively decorated.

This was a big disappointment... we had the king/ocean front room. The carpet was dirty, one nightstand was missing a knob... the carpet around the legs of the furniture has not been cleaned in a very long time. The bedspread had a black stain on it. The room is VERY small.
The only positive about our stay was the spa and pool were very clean and perfect temperture. All this for $179.00 a night. We were thankful we were only staying there for one night. Interesting is, I asked the front desk which room is their most popular room and they informed me it was the one we were staying in..... so I guess we had the best there.... Feburary 29th 2004.

I took my three boys for a get away-having grown up in Santa Maria-i thought it would be a nice change from Vegas. My kids LOVED IT!! They said it was better than Disneyland. Location is wonderful. The breakfast was something to look forward to in the mornings. We used the back stairs in the early mornings and found whole sanddollars! We also rented wet suits and boogie boarded to our hearts content--all just a short walk from our room. The pool and hot tub was well used by us.
Overall-a great time and very quaint atmosphere. If you are wanting the Bellagio-do Vegas. If you want the unspoiled feeling of old Pismo--Do the Inn!!

Top Local Tips for Pismo Beach

Great place to eat! F. McClintock's, a Ranch style steak house is excellent. To save money go between 4:30pm and 6:00pm, when the price range is between 17 and 25 per person.

Excercising You can walk to the main shopping area and pier from the Cottage Inn.

Pierside Restaurant We ate at Pierside Restaurant for dinner and it wasn't even crowded for being right directly next to the Pier. The prices were great! They are more a hamburger/chowder/salad type. They even had grilled cheese for my little picky eater. After we ate we walked the Pier and watched the surfers.
