Amazing Service at a wonderful hotel

As with most every Westin I've stayed in, the rooms were nice and the beds were comfortable. However, the rooms here are a bit small. The lobby is big and beautiful. And behind the hotel is a peacful little fountain garden that is great for relaxing or just reading.

But what made this hotel stand out was the service. I took a group out for the Billy Graham Crusade and probably called the hotel 20 times with adjustments to our rooms and schedule. I was the one who couldn't get my act together, yet every time I called they were helpful and every single person I talked with was polite. Upon check-in, they still made necessary adjustments and worked hart accomodate all our request.

One thing I look for when I travel is courteous service. And this hotel was top-notch in this area. Some of the kindest people and best service I've experienced in a long while.

We had a great time at this hotel! The staff was helpful but not overbearing. The pool and pool area was great (the pool was a little small). The room was really nice.

Renovation In Progress--Needs More

Rooms are smaller than I would expect from a Westin. Nice dark wood closet doors and small tables in both bedroom and bathroom. I like the Westin extended shower rod so the curtain doesn't stick to you but here the curtain isn't wide enough to keep all the water in the bathtub. I found the beige and light green decor to be bland and uninteresting but I suppose one person's soothing is another's boring. Painting and other refurbishing is underway in the lobby area.

My harshest critique is reserved for the food. Quality was unacceptable. My Caesar salad had been prepared some time before it was served to me and the lettuce was limp and soggy. My filet mignon, potatoes and vegetables were tepid and appeared as if they had been reheated rather than freshly cooked. Breakfast pancakes were tough and dry. The restaurant is under renovation. I hope they renovate the food preparation methods as well.

The location is fairly close to Colorado Street shops. If I stayed here again, I would eat elsewhere.

The hotel is 2 short blocks to Colorado Street where there is a concentration of shopping and restaurants. Another 3 blocks along Colorado is where the restaurants with sidewalk cafes are. We didn't mind the walk. There is a nearby pedestrian plaza where special events take place. During our stay in late June 2005 there were dozens of chalk artists creating works on dozens of designated sidewalk sections off the street on the plaza.
The hotel itself was in the midst of a partial remodel while we were there so there was a paint smell in the lobby and the elevator bank was surrounded by bare sheetrock but it really didn't bother us---the rest of the hotel was OK. The hotel tends to be on the upscale side---there was valet parking with no apparent option for self service. The lobby level was very nice with a restaurant with high prices. A basic breakfast for 3 came to $55 but the service and food was very good. There was an outdoor pool on the fourth floor and a separate exercise room on the same level with very large windows on several sides affording a good view of the surrounding mountains.
The beds were incredibly luxurious and comfortable, we had a flat screen TV and the bathroom was nicer than most. Each time we arrived or departed in the lobby we were warmly greeted by a staff member. For the $149 per night we paid we were well satisfied.

Nice Surprise

Checked into the Westin for a 4 day conference. Don't normally stay in Starwood (Westin) properties, but here I am, and pleasantly surprised with the comfort and size of the room. Since I'm not an 'honored' guest at this chain, I expected a closet size room next to the ice machine. Instead I am shown to a corner suite, with one of the best beds I've ever slept in! All for $179.

Pretty Good

Stayed here last weekend in an executive suite. Nice suite; very clean and spacious, with nice separate dressing area. This hotel used to be a Doubletree, and only the rooms have been renovated as of now. We were told by concierge that the lobby and all public areas including the restaurant and bar are slated for remodel later this year. Most of the staff from Doubletree were kept on, and this resulted in some lackluster and apathetic service that wasn't really up to other big city Westin standards. Free shuttle within 3 mile radius is a nice perk in theory, but again, service was not consistent. We had a great ride to our destination, but a mixup for our pick up ended up with us waiting almost an hour, after four calls to the hotel that weren't passed on to the driver. Turns out the driver had a cell phone, but we couldn't get the desk staff to give him our cell number to call us, so we had to keep calling the hotel to see where he was. They gave him the wrong location twice, so he was driving around looking for us someplace else. Huge waste of everyone's time. There were some good staff members, mostly concierge staff, but we got the feeling this hotel wasn't great for service. Locale is good, about six blocks up from downtown Old Town Pasadena (let's say six blocks up and two blocks over from Colorado and Delacey, for a point of reference, and four blocks in a straight line to the convention center.) Not a jewel in the Westin crown, but the great thing about Westin is that they are nothing if not predictable; the service is never truly awful and you know you're bound to get a hotel in a fairly convenient, safe area with a clean room, which is more than can be said for 90% of the hotels in this category that are out there.

I stayed at the Westin Pasadena in February 2005. It was my first visit. I'd stay there again. The location is good, as it's just a couple blocks from Colorado Avenue, and easy walking distance to the many shops and restaurants in that area. The room was attractive and comfortable, featuring a modern design. High-speed Internet access was available, but at a cost of $9.95 per day. There was no honor bar. The room had a nice work area. The hotel's common areas were clean and pleasant, but not extraordinary. There's a small gift shop; I didn't use the restaurant. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Overall, it was a positive experience for a business traveler looking for comfortable, convenient place to spend the night.

Wonderful Staff, Fantastic Service, Perfect Location

My girlfirend and I checked into the Westin Pasadena to enjoy a romantic Valentine's weekend. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted by a wonderfully cheerful bellman who promptly took our bags and escorted us to the check-in where we met another another smiling staff member at the front desk. Throughout our entire stay the staff and service were fantastic, fast, and friendly.

Our room was decorated in a more modern style, but was roomy and bright. I had booked a room with a balcony and requested a room that had a view of Pasadena's ornate city hall as well. I'm glad that I did, the view was great and it didn't cost extra. Although the balcony was quite small it was large enough for my girlfriend and I to enjoy champagne and strawberries as we gazed upon the city of Pasadena and the San Gabriel mountains.

Where did the champagne and stawberries come from you ask? Well, to our suprise they were sent to our room with a handwritten card from the management wishing us a lovely Valentine's Weekend. What a great touch to a perfect weekend from a superb hotel.

The Westin's location is absolutely perfect. It is only a half of a block to city hall and half of a block to Colorado Boulevard, old Pasadena's main street where there are many tastey restaurants to eat at and enough shops and boutiques that will make any girlfriend happy. Because of the hotel's close location to many good restaurants (Bistro 45, Nonya, Villa Sorriso) and a cool wine bar (Bodega) we never ate at the hotel, but enjoyed experiencing some of Pasadena's best. Additionally the hotel is only a couple of minutes from the world-class Norton Simon Musuem and about ten minutes to the Huntington Library and Gardens.

For fanatastic service, a perfect location, and a great way to score some points with your girlfriend take her here and you surely will not be disappointed.

Needs to Improve

The Pasadena Westin did not live up to my expectation of Westin Hotels. Having visited many, this one was lacking. The rooms are smaller and some of the finer Westin things are missing.

This immediate area does not offer much in the way of quality hotels. Hopefully, the Pasadena Westin (a building converted from another hotel chain) will add more plush for the dollar.

Pasadena Now Has a Cool Hotel

Stayed here in January 2005. Very centrally located, recently renovated hotel. I was upgraded to the SPG members floor, and I was really impressed. Very subdued, comnfortable Starwood room. All limestone and dark wood, heavenly bed, that great curved shower rod that keeps the curtain away from you, all nice. The courtesy shuttle van to areas in Pasadena was very nice, as were the drivers. The hotel plans to renovate its lobby and restaurant in 2005. Great breakfast in the restaurant.

My one gripe: they didn't leave my wake-up call. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Top Local Tips for Pasadena

Amazing Don't miss the Huntington Library. Major artwork and one of the most incredible gardens in the world.

Visit Old Town for the Food Take the hotel shuttle bus to Old Town if you don't like walking. For really inexpensive Italian, I go to Louise's in Old Town. There's a lot of other stuff too...try Noodle World if you want something exotic. If you're driving around, take a hike to Monterey Park or Alhambra, nearby cities where you'll get the best Chinese food in California (I'm serious). It's only about a 10-15 minute drive. The original Noodle World is in Alhambra I think. Go there if you feel adventurous. Dim sum is great too! Skip Chinatown for the food. Go to where the Chinese eat!

Don't miss the Green Street Restraunt Green Street Restraunt in Old Pasadena has a wonderful breakfast. It is a 15 minute walk from hotel but they will shuttle you their. Great Zuchinni bread and huge portions. It is on Lake Street.
