Top Local Tips for Pasadena

Records... There are a few posts about record shops in Pasadena. We went to three; Canterbury's, Pooh-bah's and one more whose name is lost in me right now. All three were very disappointing. I am a record collector of rock and roll and indie music and the friends with us collect techno/dj type records. Both of which are not prevelant at any of the three shops. One focuses on dated-swing-jazz type music, very electic in musical preference. Pooh-bah's was also unimpressive in selection and not as good as recommended by this site. Canterbury's is NOT a place for records but for Dvd's or cds. No real records found here except for about 2 rows consisting of their entire collection. Overall, don't hope for a gem in Pasadena-travel to LA for real record shopping.

One day to spend in Pasadena Toured Gamble House. Recommend making reservation ahead so you won't have to appear at the site to book a tour. Had no trouble getting tour when we appeared at 10:30 AM. We could have booked any that midweek day. Huntington had special exhibit on Constable we wanted to see. Were surprised by the acres of gardens at the Huntington. Had anticipated one main museum building. We visited three buildings and a conservatory and enjoyed walking through gardens between buildings. Could have spent entire day here relaxing, enjoying lunch and touring grounds. Norton Simon museum has high quality art. Outdoor cafe offered prepackaged sandwiches and drinks. Enjoyed lemonade, but cafe is not the highlight. Didn't take audio tour but it would have added to the visit. If a tour of the Asian art holdings is offered take it. Did see one of the theatre programs about Norton Simon and how he built the collection. We had only one day to spend in Pasadena and we did three museums in one day.

THE BUS Take the $181 bus up and down Colorado Boulevard (the main drag). Over-62 pass is $1.80 all day.
