Beautiful
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Viceroy in March 2004. In a city of lovely lodgings, this stands out. It's built around 4 court-yards, three have pools and the other a fountain. Our large comfortable room faced the stunning mountains. Each morning delicious coffee and a newspaper was provided at no charge. Daily at the pools attendants brougt frosty glasses of ice water. There are two perfect whirlpools. The supply of fluffy towels was supurb. We are looking forward to our return.
Overrated

The Viceroy is totally overrated. It is an old hotel remodeled in an art deco decor using black, white and yellow. Decor is neat, bed is comfortable, linens are good quality, and the location is good if you want to shop old town. That's the best I can do. Restaurant is mediocre and has small selection. Minibar selection small as well....no wine! My first room reflected the cheap rate of $169. It had no windows and was as big as a Kleenex box. The front desk clerk, Heather, was nice enough to relocate me to a better room with a patio and sitting area. Side walks are narrow and hard to maneuver with luggage in tow. Bath tub is tiny. Car valet didn't offer to put my luggage in the truck when I checked out, just left the keys in the ignition and ran inside! Next time I go to Palm Springs, I will return to the hotel I've stayed at 3 times and thought I was tired of: Marriott Desert Springs. I do not recommend the Viceroy to anyone.
The best in Palm Springs

we had a great time while staying at the Viceroy. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpfull. They provided us with an upgrade when we came back the second time within one week. There is hardly anybody there at the pool so it's very peaceful. They have a gym which is opened 24 hours and private parking. Downtown is only 2 blocks away. If you are looking for a secluded getaway, The Viceroy is the place to be!
Bad Staff Ruins An Attractive Hotel
from A TripAdvisor Member
The sloppy and unpolished staff really ruin what could be a great hotel. The Viceroy is stylish, and the rooms were very comfortable. But there is constant noise from leaf blowers and power tools from 8:00am until 8:00pm all over the grounds. My spa treatments were hijacked by all of the noise, and the noise continues into the evening. When I contacted the front desk about the very loud power tools, they only mumbled "Sorry, they'll leave around 8:00pm". At check-in the staff was clumsy and far too casual, there were employees children running around the lobby, and the entire staff wears cheap Viceroy t-shirts in varying degrees of cleanliness instead of real uniforms. It could be a great place, but the consistently unprofesional staff lets it all fall apart.
Staff Undertrained
from HamptonsTraveler
The biggest problem I found was that the staff seemed to not know what was going on.
Calling the front desk was hit or miss, getting a question answered (such as how to use the phone) usually resulted being put on hold 5 minutes while someone found someone who might know the answer.
The rooms were nice. The restaurant/room service was excellent.
You should be warned that they charge $1.50 everytime you use the phone (800) #'s etc.

Front Desk Service Terrible But Everything Else Great
from BayAreaTA_Member
If you want seclusion, privacy and quiet, this hotel is perfect. You almost miss the hotel because of its unobtrusive entrance. Room was great, just like the pictures on the website. I had a Regency room by one of the pools. The room is a good size and clean. Hotel has an onsite spa and 3 pools where no one bothers you. As a guest, you can join the morning hike or other classes free of charge. Spa services were professional and relaxing. Beds are one of the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Grounds are beautiful and the hotel is about 1-2 blocks from downtown. The hotel also has its own private parking for guests. Despite all the raves though, the front desk service was awful. And I expected phenomenal service for the price I was paying, which I didn't get. They screwed up my reservation and didn't apologize; were rude; overcharged me and really just didn't care. The front desk service really needs to be improved. BUT the rest of the staff (maid service, waiters, spa staff) were terrific. There is construction going on next door but I didn't hear any of it from where I was staying.
Fabulous

Stayed in a suite off-season & couldn't find fault. The grounds are lovely, plenty of sun beds for everyone (no rush to secure one in the morning), room plenty big enough, super comfortable beds & linen, great breakfast & stylish surroundings. A really pleasurable experience.
Loved our bungalow and the spa
from Travelbuff32
My husband and I stayed here for spring break and loved it! We had our own little bungalow which was very well decorated, clean and roomy. Very tranquil atmosphere at the hotel; our room was on the end where the spa is located. The spa was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed the salt scrub, and my husband had an outdoor massage. The Citron was lovely for dinner. What a gem!
Not for Everyone
from strathj
Viceroy Palm Springs (Formerly the Estrella.) Great location near shopping. Reasonably attractive grounds. Attractively designed room--in a funky sort of way. Great bed. Evening bed turn down service with fresh towels and a piece of chocolate. Passable exercise room. What's not to like? Well, actually there is a LOT not to like. The room was completely dysfunctional. You couldn't see the TV from the couch or chair, so we started moving furniture. That left our heads banging the 15 bulb taxi-cab yellow chandelier that normally hangs over the coffee table. There are no drawers for clothes or laundry. The total closet space for hanging long clothes was 18" wide once we removed the ironing board--barely enough for our hanging bag suit case. So we looked at the ironing board for two days. No counters in the bathroom. Mini-fridge was too warm. No coffee pot. Only one ice machine for the entire facility. No space to pound your computer without moving the couch up to the tiny telephone table. No pen for taking phone messages. Local and 800 phone calls are $1.50. Photocopying is $2 a page. And, needless to say, no cards requesting feedback. Even with the deep discount rate, this room was no bargain. (Visited 4/23-25/04).
always a first rate experience

My best friend and I have had the total pleasure of staying here a few times recently when we have come to visit Palm Springs. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, from the waiters and bartenders at the restaurant Citron, the spa employees, housekeeping staff and the tremendous manager have always been extremely friendly , efficient and very conscientious. The physical environment of the property is as lush and stunning as anything I have encountered in the south of France. the rooms are beautiful, the linens tremendous and the peacefulness of the proerty (sans construction!) is rejuvenating. As a frequent traveler to many parts of the globe, the Viceroy (Estrella) remains one of my favorite destinations.
Top Local Tips for Palm Springs
Ariel Tramway This is one of the best things about Palm Springs, you can sun bathe in the morning and take the ariel tramway to play in the snow in the afternoon, a water fight and a snowball fight on the same day - brilliant
Johannes www.johannesrestaurants.com very good food, impecable service, wine list for everyone! Must eat here when visiting Palm Springs!
Great Spot There are great places to eat in Palm Springs but Spencers on Baristo is a gem. Great food, excellent service without a huge price tag. Avoid Copleys on Palm Canyon - great hype but poor quality
