We were shown to a hot and noisey room even though it was cool outside. The room already had an extra floor fan in it working overtime but it didn't make any difference. Complaints were handled with contempt, "We don't need air-conditioning!" and lies, "None of the other hotels in Monterey have air-conditioning" Not True. I heard they told other people that complained the reason they don't have A/C is to help the planet. All this and they self list themselves on at leasthree major travel websites as having A/C. Totally dishonest and in the UK it would be illegal to do so. "Well it's not here!" said one of the managers we complained to. The rooms don't even have a room safe and we see from other reviews that items were stolen from rooms. The restaurant and cafe were empty at 7pm when we went to diner. That didn't stop the uninspired and poorly trained staff from ignoring us and keeping us waiting despite complaints. We gave up complaining to managers that had no interest in resolving problems and demanded to speal to the Gerenral Manager. Despite waiting until the following day and being told he was in, wasn't in today, yes he was, hadn't been in today, had just left, etc, he refused to show himself. Our retal car was returned with dents in it but reading other peoples reviews on tripadvisor.com and many others, we see that our experiences were not uncommon. AVOID!

Nice hotel but . . .

This hotel is nice and the service is good but it has issues. The rooms are hot (mine reached 84F) with no air conditioning. I was promised the room at 4:00 pm and it was still not ready at 5:00 pm. Room was very noisy. I would not recommend staying here unless you are willing to pay the price for the ocean view rooms. Do not get a room on the ground floor. The rooms are warm and I was not comfortable leaving my sliding glass door open to cool off the room (outside temp 52F). I suffered trying to sleep in an 82F room. My coworkers had rooms facing the bike path and said they were extremely noisy.

All that I expected!

I was so pleased with my stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa that I am ready to book another four days this year! The food was superb - I didn't ever have to leave the hotel - I enjoyed the spa, the facial and the exercise area. We also sat in the roof top Jacuzzi to relax and renew our spirits! I was most impressed with the helpful staff - they were knowledgeable about the area and courteous in all things. This is the kind of treatment I would expect from a luxury spa and I wasn’t disappointed.

Paradise by the Bay

I have stayed many times at the Monterey Plaza in Monterey, CA. This hotel straddles the main tourist areas of Monterey, and is centrally located near Cannery Row and the Aquarium. If you stay, be sure to get a room with an ocean view, preferably with a balcony. At our last stay our room had the ocean view, but also over-looked the courtyard and was a low-floor room. Once the wedding party directly below us started rocking out, our solitude was gone for the whole evening. So make sure you question them about the *location* of your room. I also recommend splurging on a spa package -- the most relaxing massage I've had in quite a while. The wait staff is always very accommodating and readily available. I went trolling around for a Sunday New York Times and when I told a hotel staffer what I was looking for, he had one in my hands within minutes! The rooms are nicely appointed, with sumptuous over-stuffed beds. Plush terry-cloth robes are hanging and a well-stocked mini-bar is accessible. The televisions are large (25'') -- although the channel selection is minimal. We had difficulty trying to rent a premium movie we wanted. High speed internet is available, although there is a charge for it. Binoculars are placed in the ocean view rooms so you can stare out at all the wonderful sea creatures. This hotel is by far the best hotel I've ever stayed in, and I highly recommend it.

The actual location coupled with the feeling you get when you walk into the hotel sets the tone for your stay. It's the experience of understated lux. It is not pretentious, yet the feeling is elegant. We would definitely stay again.
