Top Local Tips for Monterey

Best Sea Food The staff let us know about a small out of the way place that is not near the water but has the best selection of sea food. MONTEREY FISH HOUSE. A PINK BUILDING IN AN INDUSTRIAL AREA.Yes the menu if good but wait for the specials. Oh my. get there early or you have to wait.

17 Mile Drive We did the 17 Mile Drive around Pebble Beach. At first the $9.25 entry fee seemed weird and wrong. $9.25 to drive around a golf course? It turned out to be a really fun and beautiful drive. If you purchase lunch, the entry fee is credited against your bill. We have a rule though. The more it cost, the worse it is. We ate at the Stillwater at The Lodge. The lunch was expensive, service slow and the order wrong. What more could you ask for such a high-falutin' place? It must be easy to take advantage of rich people. So, do the drive. Just don't eat there. Oh, yea. Make sure you have enough fuel. The gas there is about a buck higher a gallon.

Dennis the Menace Park One more tip: If you have little ones, don't miss the Dennis the Menace park at Lake El Estero, a 5 minute drive from the hotel. It includes a real decommissioned locamotive for the kids to play in and climb all over, a climbing wall, long bridge, tunnels, a maze, climbing structure, swings, slides, and more. Free entrance and a snack bar and paddle boat rentals are located there as well. They were stocking the pond with fish while we were there, so we got to watch the birds swooping down to catch the fish from the water and the ducks catching them as well. Great park!
