Look for the discount hotel books in gas stations. These little books are great. I have found 3 for the CA area. They are usually only honored Sun-Thu, not on holidays. Sometimes you have to argue to get the rates but it's worth it. I have heard excuses like: we are sold out of cheap rooms tonight and only have the more expensive ones, we won't honor those because we have changed management, the coupon is expired. If you have a book, but it's expired, go to the books website and find the coupon, take your laptop to the front desk and demand the lower rate. Usually as I walk out the door they call me back and agree to the lower rate. If you travel with any discount AARP, AAA, Military, Business, etc. Ask for the hotels lowest rate first, then tell them you have a discount after the initial rate quote. Many hotels ask you if you have a discount first then quote you a rate, have a friend call back and find out your discount rate is the same or more as the regular rate!
