Mosquito Infested Rip-Off

I was quite angry that I spent so much money on this place. Charges luxury rates, bills itself as innovative with its little white golf carts, etc., but it's all really bad, unfortunately. The construction materials for the buildings are very cheap--Motel 6 like (in fact, the place is surrounded by budget motels that are better options), and to make everything worse I couldn't leave my ocean front door open because there were so many mosquitoes. I realize that the site went through an expensive, time-consuming Coastal Act permitting process. Unfortunately, the mitigation measures and conditions of approval must have been so onerous that the end-product was a very inconvenient motel-like campus. Surely not worth more than $80 a night. Sadly, if I remember correctly I paid approx. $300! That's enough for me to take time and write a review, which I probably wouldn't do otherwise...

Historical Traveller Reviews of Marina Dunes Resort Hotel

One of the greatest places we have stayed!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband got away by ourselves for the weekend and were extremely impressed with this resort! We did pay almost $250 a night but had the top ocean view jr suite and it was worth the money for us! The staff was extremely helpful, we love the option of a continental breakfast being brought to our room for a minimal charge and the golf carts to get around were fun! Our view was fantastic and the whole Marina beach in that area is just gourgeous. In the past we have stayed in the downtown Monterey area but this was so nice to be away from all that in a beautiful, peaceful setting but we were still close enough to shop, see a movie and have dinner there. Overall we were very impressed and would highly recommend this resort to anyone!

FUN, FUN, FUN

My husband and 2 children and I spent 2 nights there and had the best time. The golf carts were great! My 6 year old and 2 year old sat on our laps and steered! The room was beautiful and clean. The service was outstanding. Everyone was nice and accomodating. We would definitely go back again - but without the kids. The ambience was warm and romantic - a fireplace in every room. We noticed a couple of cars with "Just Married" signs on them. It is perfect for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon. We stayed at 3 different hotels during our vacation (Marina Dunes Resort, Marina, CA; Crowne Plaza, Garden Grove, CA; and Holiday Inn Express, San Luis Obispo) and this was by far the best of the three. We got a great deal off the internet ($99.00 a night for a Sunday and Monday stay). It was ironic that the Marina Dunes was the least expensive hotel yet it offered the most and had the best service.
Oh yes, it's true what the other reviewers said about AJ Spurs, the restaurant inside the resort. It was very expensive. I suggest driving 10 minutes to downtown Monterey for dinner.

Very romantic

My husband and I stayed at the marina dunes resprt. We Loved it. The hotel is beautiful. We did a little research online and found a web sight offering room there for $95.00 a night. I dont like booking through the online sights so i called them directly and the honered the price. When we got there we had a breathtaking view of the ocean. Our room was right but the trail down to the beach and was not even a minute walk down. The beds where very comfy and the bath room where huge. Ours had a shower and a separate bath that was on diffrent sides of the bathroom. We had a great setting area and the fireplace was lovely. We liked the hotel so much we called the front desk and asked if we could reserve the room 2 more night and they let us for the same $95.00 we paid the first time. This resport it very romantic and a nice place to stay. I recommend you take a bottle of wine and a blanket and go watch the sun set on the beach. I have lots of photos you can email me and i will send them to you.

Must have been paying for the real estate!

Perhaps I'm naive, but I paid more for this hotel ($283) room than I did for my wedding dress! I first got a sick feeling in my stomach when we drove in and there was a Motel 6 and a Best Western across the street . I'd been sleeping on the ground in Yosemite for 5 days and this was supposed to have been my reward. Like others, I arrived early and was told I had to wait until 4 pm to check in. I did get to sit down during the registration process (geepers! ) and got several little maps of the area so that presumably I would go away and come back much later. Also a nice brochure describing massages for exorbitant prices.
Finally we check in, and get the golf cart. I can't really figure out its purpose, but the kids did have fun helping us drive them around.
The pool was extremely ordinary, lots of cement. The restaurant A.J.
Spurs was good, but way too much food, and a little rugged for the price. The room was smallish, but had a very comfortable bed. We were promised some linen for the kids which never appeared. The turn down service, the 35 cent piece of chocolate on the pillow and the fabulous little fan shape they made with the toilet paper and the tissues didn't cut it for me. There was a card, wine and snacks for someone else left in our room. We notified the front desk, but they sounded harrassed and never came to retreive it-ha we drank it! We were looking forward to playing in the ocean, but there were warning signs everywhere about strong currents. So my time at the beach was nerve-wracking, watching the kids as they chased the waves back and forth, hoping that they wouldn't be sucked out to sea. Next time I'll go across the street.

Calm and beautiful retreat...

My husband and I and our 9 month old son stayed at this resort for 3 nights and highly enjoyed our visit. We had an ocean front deluxe room on a second level and the view of the ocean was not only fantastic but breathtaking! Just a hint...if you want a guaranteed view of the ocean, ask for a second floor room. The resort turned out to be more family friendly than we anticipated and we felt comfortable and relaxed.
Although we felt our room and location was excellent we did feel some areas of the resort needed improvement. The onsite restaurant, AJ Spurs, handles the room service for the resort and their menu is not only expensive but very, very limited. Service and food in the restuarant itself is very good(actually they give you TOO much food) but still highly expensive. The resort staff was friendly, informative and eager to help but the housekeeping staff lacks a bit in replenishing room necessities. Overall, this resort is beautiful, quiet and above par to most Monterey area hotels. The rooms are decent sized, the bedding comfortable and the bathrooms large and functional. Hands down, the location in itself is the draw for this place. Hopefully the management will upgrade some ammenities to fit their large nightly charge. No one should be dissapointed with a room charge of $149-$180 for a Deluxe Ocean Front room. But when it starts to get into the $200+ range, the ammenities do not seem to fit the bill. All in all, it's a good resort in a great location. We will stay again.

Beautiful resort!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I loved everything about this place. From the location, room, to the on-site restaurant AJ Spurs. It was fabulous. We had a lovely room with a fireplace and patio facing the ocean...included in our room rate was a breakfast basket which was wonderful. The location of this resort was a little distance from Cannery row but much preferred. I love the serenity of it all.

Highly recommended - will stay again!

fun but could have been better

from mshday
We arrived early and our ocean view room wasn't ready. the concierge was wonderful, and made the wait a pleasant experience. the room was spacious and it's true about the remote control, it was awful. the bed was the best I'd ever slept in. the golf carts were a fun little surprise. I expected the rooms to be a little nicer and I was disappointed to find out that the fireplace was connected to the central air/ heating system, so the only way to turn on the fireplce was to put on the heater. the bathroom was big, but the towels were rough, and they only gave you one small shampoo bottle. We stayed for 3 nights!!!! the service was exceptional except for the housekeeping who kept coming back to see if we were gone every 10 minutes even though there was a do not disturb sign on our door. the location was amazing.
the staff was generally pretty good. I guess it just left me wanting a little more for the $239/ night that I paid.

Comfortable, great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
The bed was really comfortable, and the room was clean and pleasant.
The location is fantastic -- even with a "dunes view" room, we could see and hear the ocean. I was disturbed by the remains of cigarette and cigar butts outiside our patio (which makes me wonder about the "eco-friendly" approach to the dunes -- I would love to know where the $15 a night dunes restoration fee really goes). Our patio door could have used a screen, and bathrobes didn't show up until our second night.

Inept Concierge

from A TripAdvisor Member
Rooms are connected by noisy hallways where sounds from one unit easily flow into another - distrupting privacy. Numerous cigarette buts outside patio sand adjacent to "sensitive habitat" fenced off area.
Staff at concierge seemed misplaced and inept, inexperienced and rude.

disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were very disappointed with the condition of our rooms and the general attitude and lack of concern of some staff personel at check-in. The carpets in our rooms were filthy and should be replaced.
Sliding mirror closet doors never worked right. Patio door was broken and never fixed properly during our stay. One of the rooms had a continous odor of spoiled milk coming from the carpeting. TV controllers were cheap and very frustrating to use. Refrigerators never got cold enough and no soap or shampoo holders in the showers. We rented two suites in June for five days with a beautful ocean view and plenty of privacy. The daily and evening housekeeping services/ personel were terrific and very helpful. It is a shame that ownership has allowed the rooms to fall into their present astate of disrepair.
