Historical Traveller Reviews of Sea View Inn at the Beach Hotel

Great Hotel

from pouchman
I am from the Chicago land area and travel quite abit, there is not a place Like Manhattan beach.
This is the only hotel I will stay at, I have stayed at a lot of the larger hotels by the LAX airport and non of them compare to this. The Staff is great and make you feel like you are at home. I have stayed at this Hotel around 10 times in the past year and have reccommended it to several of my customers and we agree that this place is to be to relax and truly enjoy the "Beach" and comfort.

I have several other trips scheduled to the area and I know that I will give James there a call and book.

Good luck Seaview and I will see you soon.

Nice surprise!

from EssieGirl
Found the Sea View on the internet for a last minute trip to Manhattan Beach. The price, location and staff is great. We rented bikes (for free) and had a very nice ride along the Strand to Hermosa Beach. We returned to the Hermosa Beach area for dinner/drinks via a short cab ride later that night. There are a few good resturants/bars very close to the hotel as well. Yes, there is street noise, but not all night long, and not all the rooms face the street, so just ask for a quieter room off Highland. Ocean views were amazing!

Great location

Made last minute plans and after speaking to a staff member, were told our only options were a standard room, no ocean view, or a luxury suite with a view. Fortunately when we arrived, another suite had become available because the original choice turned out to be an old beach house whose "ocean view" was blocked by a house currently being constructed! Our room had a nice deck though it faced Highland Ave which had quite a bit of traffic so we didn't get much use out of that.

The ocean views are really only partial views and since the rooms are a few blocks from the beach anyway, we decided the real value of staying here is the beach access and the free bikes, so our next visit will be with a standard room. The luxury suites look nothing like the pictures, so our expectations were completely misguided; however, once you get past that, the accommodations were actually fine. Our suite had a good sized kitchen (which we never used), a living room and a separate bedroom. If they had shown pictures of the true suite it would have been fine, as it basically felt like a well-used beach house .

The bikes were fabulous since you can get down to Hermosa Beach, and all the shops and restaurants in between, by riding on the Strand which is a lovely bike path with ocean to one side and gorgeous homes on the other. The customer service was great, very friendly and laid-back. Yes the hill is quite steep to get to the beach so dragging the bikes back up was inconvenient, but only minorly so.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and will be back. You won't be able to listen to the ocean falling asleep, and don't expect luxury accommodations, but if you are looking for a clean, motel with relatively easy access to the beach and lots of extras like beach towels, chairs, bikes, etc, this is the place for you. If you need a 4 star hotel and are a complete couch potato, you will be disappointed.

Great for the beach

from slot14
The key to this hotel is its location to the beach and the whole Manhattan Beach area. The beach is just great and there is a very nice boardwalk along the beach. The condos lining the boardwalk are very impressive. The the restraunts in Manhattan Beach can be trendy but the price are very reasonable. The whole is area is extremely safe.

This is a great California beach experience.

The hotel could be described as a better beach hotel but it is not upscale if that is what you are looking for. The walk to the beach in really pretty simple.

Any way you look at it this hotel is much better than staying at one of the hotels about 2 miles inland.

The staff was very good and they had great directions to all the attractions in Hollywood or other parts of LA. Go see the sites in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon

Paradise in Manhattan Beach!

from Surps
We stayed for two nights (Aug. 23rd & 24th) and I would have loved to have more time there! Our room was very pretty and clean and it was a perfect spot to experience the beach community... we loved being right next door to the Local Yolk and what a fantastic bonus to be able to check out bikes for free! (Not to mention the boogie boards etc.) The beach is extremely clean and gorgeous in Manhattan - sure, it's downhill so you have to walk back up the hill when returning to the hotel, but it didn't bother me one bit. I mean, we stayed at the beach to be ACTIVE and enjoy the outdoors! The free bikes and boogie boards are a huge bonus if you really are interested in having the total Southern Cal beach experience - to pay for rentals of those things can really add up. And absolutely everyone in the office was extremely friendly and helpful - in fact my whole family really commented on this because other beach places we've stayed have had kind of snooty staff people, but we didn't get that feeling here at all, only smiling, friendly, and helpful staff. The parking spots were fine, we have a Nissan mini-van and we had no problem fitting in the spaces - hello, people, it's the California BEACH scene, if you look around at the houses and streets you'll notice that people are jam-packed pretty tight there! In short, we absolutely LOVED our stay and would do it again.

disappointed

from DMH50
The only thing the Seaview has going for it is the location. The housekeeping was poor. The rooms were shabby and long over due for a good cleaning and new furnishings. There was parking but the designated spaces were only fit for subcompact cars. It was difficult to get in and out of the tiny parking lot. Too bad it's one of the few hotels within walking distance of the beach. I wouldn't consider staying there again.

Regarding this remark>>>>
We up date our hotel consistently throughout the year. We are a beach hotel, 2 1/2 blocks from the sand and do have shops, dinning, and are located in the city of Manhattan Beach which has been rated equivalent to Beverly Hills type community, Manhattan Beach is very save and FAMILY oriented.

All Right - If you want the location

from BJMSZ
We stayed here on a trip, in which we were going to the Hollywood and Disneyland areas. This was a bad choice, becasue it was a 30 - 45 min. drive to get to these places, and it's even worse during rush hour! The room was a bit outdated. BEWARE - It had a key and lock instead of the usual card key, which most hotels have. That was a bit scary for my 12 year old daughter. Plus, the hotel is in a residential area. Some teenagers were partying in a house near our apartment-type of room at midnight one night. The room did not come with a phone book, so I had to dial 411 to get the police non-emergency phone number. The hotel room had a large kitchen, a family room with an uncomfortable pull-out couch, a bathroom, and a pretty small bedroom. The room was on the second floor of a building, since we had an apartment room instead of a motel room. We stayed here for 4 nights. The beach location was nice, but we were not staying in L.A. for the beach, we were here for Hollywood and Disneyland. If you are going to L.A. for the beach, then, this hotel would be fine. The only problem - a steep walk back up these hills to get from the beach back up to the room. Overall, I would only stay here again if I wanted to go to the beach.

what a find!

from TheFyfes
This was our first trip to LA with our two teenage boys having stayed in Santa Monica on previous visits . We have a very close friend from Northern Ireland who has lived in Holywood for 25 years and she recommended Manhattan Beach as 'the quintessential Californian Beach Holiday' for our family - and was she right!

The Sea View Inn was exactly what we wanted - tremendous location, good rooms(not luxurious but clean and comfortable) and free gear for the beach(which we all used extensively). It reallly gave us an experience of the local Manhattan beach community
.
The local restaurants were excellent - breakfasts at the Local Yolk which set us up for the day as well as several evening restaurants like Panchos(a mexican restaurant which my wife and I enjoyed) and Sloopys(which our kids loved).

The proximity to the beach and the free beach gear really made our stay. The beach is only about 5 minutes walk from the hotel - but its about 10 minutes back because of the hill!

We took the free bikes out on a couple of days and had tremendous fun cycling along the (flat!) cycle paths along the beach right up to Santa Monica.

Overall opinion - the staff were very friendly and helpful the hotel was clean and comfortable, the location is excellent, the free beach gear was a bonus, would we go back - absolutely yes!!

Overrated at best

from WestChesterOH
We just returned from a stay at the Sea View Inn staying in the Executive Suite @ 215.00 per night. I was expecting fabulous service based on the prior reviews. My experience was very mediocre in dealing with the front desk staff. Our air conditioning did not work and we were told it had just been checked and was fine. It was not fine. Noone came to look at it and it was broke the 5 nights we stayed there. We asked to check out 5 bikes and were told that we could only use them for 2 hrs instead of 4 since we were making an excessive request for so many bikes. The gentleman was put off and rude that we wanted them for our entire family. When we checked them back in, there were as many bikes as when we left, so we did not deplete their supply. Everytime we asked for towels (which had to be checked out) it seemed like the front desk staff was inconvenienced by our request. I did not find them to be friendly or helpful.

The hotel itself is in a very good location. That's the best I can say. The room was slightly rundown and very average. The sheets would not stay on the beds, because they were too small for the size of the mattress. That meant we were sleeping on the mattress cover. We had to ask for things like garbage bags, sheets for the sofa bed and bath towels because the cleaning service did not replenish these things regularly. The maid service was erratic. Even the windows were hard to open and we were dependent on using them since the air conditioning was broke. I wish I could say more positive things because I had positive expectations based on the previous reviews. I stay in alot of hotels and the Sea View Inn is subpar. For 215.00 a night, one would expect a cleaner and better maintained property and a more accomodating staff.

Regarding the comments of this guest, myself and my staff will ALWAYS respond to any needs of our guest and the problem will be addressed immediately.
Room service includes: changing of all towels, cleaning in each room every day unless the guest has a "Do Not Disturb" sign on their door.
Our FREE amenities include: Bikes, Beach Towels, Chairs, Umbrella's, and Boogie Boards. Responding to a time limit on our Bikes when signing them out. Just one of the highlights when staying at the Sea View Inn is our FREE bikes. We often have local and sporting events happening year around and guest ride our bikes to these events leaving them just sitting for hours locked up when other guest are requesting them to ride. As you may understand, we are only doing this so each guest may enjoy the luxury of riding alone the beach and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Southern California's Manhattan Beach and local Communities, even maybe capturing a dolphin or two riding the waves.
Best regards,
James

Nicest Staff - Ask for a Room Off Pool

from MercerIslandMom
Our family of 5 splurged for a room with a view and we advise: not worth the money...not only were we in an older, smaller room (the annex across the street from office) but the view was of roof tops and a horizon glimpse of sea.

First, let's be clear: this motel is not on the beach. It is 5 short but steep blocks to the beach. Perhaps I didn't read this clearly or I confusedly associated the motel with the beach pic on its web site.

The good news is the wonderful accomodating staff. We needed a room for naps during the early afternoon so the manager moved us from our overnight room to a room overlooking the pool -- which contrary to the annex -- was clean, more spacious and had new furniture for no charge (even though we messed up a perfectly clean room!)

Another wonderful thing for travelers from afar: the front office lends you towels, beach chairs, buckets and shovels and I believe, boogie boards. For free!

The pool was small but in a courtyard, it was warm and sheltered from the sea breeze.

Diner food is available next door at the Local Yolk, and other restaurants are within a few blocks. Nice!
