Top Local Tips for Los Angeles
Hot spot restaurant in Hollywood Too new to be in the travel guides. Great place to take teenagers -- the place attracts a lot of local 20-somethings. Noisy but fun. Food is a creative twist on standard American grill food. Nothing too fancy, but the fish and seafood entrees were excellent too.
Walk to dining There is a Ralphs market just around the corner that has almost a cafeteria type food area with salad bar, fresh sushi bar and hot deli bar. It would satisfy anybody's taste. A great place to eat for a reasonable $$. They even have seating. Just back one street is an entire food mall with everything from Morton's steak house to fast food. California Pizza kitchen is always a good choice.

The lobby is attractive, but the hard surfaces, high ceilings, and piped-in music make the noise level barely tolerable for dining. Which is too bad, because the menu is innovative and the preparation excellent. Forget about talking on your cell phone in the elevator either. The metal mesh walls terminate your call as soon as the elevator doors close.
The rooms are quite small and spartan. Lighting is very strange, with trip illumination at the bottom of the bed, but no reading lamps. (Maybe the interior designer had a bad fright as a child?) Air conditioning units are mounted inside the room with remote controls that make configuring your iPhone seem easy. Worst feature: the one closet is too short, so your slacks and jackets double over at the bottom. I don't know why anyone would pay an additional $20 to overlook Flower St. Considering the traffic noise and homeless population, I'd suggest charging $20 less.
I prefer boutique hotels to the large chains, and don't mind taking the good with the bad. The biggest issues with the Orchid could be easily fixed. Management should put some work into that in 2009.
