Airplane Noise

Okay...I admit I'm a light sleeper, but my room facing Century Boulevard on the 10th floor, just under the hotel flood lights, was NOISY, even with ear plugs. On my third night at the Clarion LAX I finally took a Tylenol PM so I could sleep. During my 5 night stay the ice machine on my floor didn't work so I spent extra time going from floor to floor looking for ice. One morning all the telephone were out so I skipped the wake up call and stayed up all evening. Not much choice considering the street noise outside. Upon check in there must have been 10 of LA's finest (police cars) in the parking lot between the hotel and Taco Bell. The elevators smelled funky and the beds were hard as a rock,and the pillows flat. Overnight parking for guest was $7.00, however, what wasn't pleasant was the threat of charging $200 for a lost parking garage ticket. There was ample viewing on the television, and the staff was generally helpful. As a frequent traveller to Los Angeles International Airport there are better budget hotels, such as the Hacienda Hotel in El Segundo which is located in a much better neighborhood. If you stay here make sure it's only for one night (and bring your ear plugs), or make sure you have a car so you can escape to one of LAX's nearby communities for a decent meal.

Comfortable and well priced

We stayed at the clarion for a couple of nights at the beginning of our holiday and as we were impressed with the hotel overall we also booked a night there before our flight back to England. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the free paper in the morning was really nice, and we didn't get this in any of the other hotels we stayed in on our 3 week holiday. The restaurant was fine, we had breakfast there which was nice enough, but we travelled into LA for dinner. I thought the car park was easy to get to, and it is accessable from the westbound direction, there is a middle lane with think yellow lines that you wait in until there is a gap to cross over, you do not need to u-turn. We did however feel that charging for the car park was an unnecessary additional cost, seeing as the hotel is quite far away from the city centre. Staff were polite and helpful. Overall this is a good place to stay for accessability to the airport.

Mediocre at best

I stayed here July 2005 for one night. I had several issues with this hotel and would probably not stay here again.

For starters, the hotel entrance is not clearly marked and can only be easily accessed from the westbound lanes of Century Blvd. If you're traveling eastbound, i.e. from the airport, you'll have to pass the hotel, then make a U-turn somwhere to get into the westbound lanes.

Parking in the adjacent garage is $7/day. However, you're required to get your parking ticket stamped every time you plan to leave the garage. Unfortunately, you have to get this stamp from the front desk, which was often understaffed and with long lines. (The stamp is only good for 20 minutes, which means you can't get your ticket stamped in advance.)

The elevators were broken when I checked in, so I had to wait while they repaired them (or else walk up five flights of stairs to get to my room). Other guests, who had been waiting longer than me, had gathered near the elevators waiting to go check-in to their rooms as well. Although they were repaired rather quickly, I found it ironic that all three elevators were down at the same time.

Room service was difficult to reach on the phone, as there was no phone number listed on the room service menu. I had to go through the hotel operator to be connected.

I was in a non-smoking room, but cigarette smoke, apparently from a nearby room, somehow drifted into my room at times.

Food at the restaurant was very mediocre. Not bad, just mediocre.

On the day of checkout, I found my final bill stuck in the door outside of my room (instead of being slid underneath the door, as most other hotels do). I did not appreciate this, as my bill had personal information on it (including my name and partial credit card number) and could have been taken by passers-by.

By the way, be VERY careful if you decide to make a local phone call from your room. Calls are only considered "local" if the phone number is within a three-mile radius. How one is supposed to ascertain the proximity of a dialed number is beyond me, but that is their policy. If the call is not "local", you're charged $2.77, plus a per-minute charge. Totally outrageous!

On the bright side, the hotel has free wireless Internet access. This free service was not advertised, but I discovered it by accident when I turned on my computer in my room. The service was rather spotty at times.

OK stay

Stayed at the Clarion proir to flying home. It was easily found from the directions that I had printed off the internet. Reception staff were helpful the room was clean and comfortable for a one night stay. Resturant not very exciting but nothing much else in the area other than quick food places. Bar staff very pleasant and helpful. We had a room at the back of the hotel so we had no noise from traffic but a friend had a room at the front of the hotel....very noisey from the road traffic and he had an uncomfortable night. We were due to flying back to the UK in the morning so it would have been better to have asked for both rooms to be at the back. Asked for an early morning call and got it right on time.
Used the hotel garage facility which we had to pay for ($6 approx) which was not expensive but we had not been told the car parking was extra.
Overall opinion ...OK for the price and it was only so that we didn't have to travel 405 in the morning rush hour!!!

A few notes about the Clarion Hotel LAX

I stayed at the Clarion Hotel LAX for one night during a layover recently (June 2005). I found the service and room facilities adequate for a 3-star hotel.

Here are a few things I noted about the room I stayed in (on the top floor of the hotel), the hotel and its location:

When I arrived at LAX, I discovered that the hotel's free shuttle service telephone number (55231) listed in the baggage claim/courtesy phone area was not working. Airport staff used their mobile phone to call the hotel phone number so that the hotel could send a shuttle bus out to the airport to get me. Advice: Make sure you have the hotel's phone number with you, in case you need to contact the hotel from the airport.

The free shuttle service to the airport runs every 20 minutes.

I arrived way before check-in time and was able to leave my luggage with the hotel reception staff while I went on a day tour of LA with nearby VIP Tours, which was recommended to me by hotel staff.

The linen provided, the furniture and the carpet in the room were clean. The bathroom was relatively clean as well, though some of the facilities were showing signs of wear and tear (e.g. bath tub was old and heavily scratched).

Toiletries (e.g. soaps, shampoo, conditioner) were provided.

All of these were in the room and all worked fine: TV set, hair-dryer, adjustable air-conditioning.

The dining facility at the hotel did not look particularly inviting to me, and there really isn't much by way of restaurants near the hotel. I went to McDonald's down the road for breakfast, and Subway across the road for dinner.

I noticed an internet cafe directly across the road from the hotel, but I did not go in.

I could actually hear the planes coming in to land at nearby LAX at 9/10pm, but it was not so loud that I could not go to sleep.

The hotel reception staff promised to set up an early morning wake-up call for me and it never happened. (Fortunately I had set my own alarm clock.) Advice: Bring your own alarm clock.

Nice firm bed

Clean, friendly staff, free shuttle to and from LAX. Very inexpensive as I went to the Traveller's Aid booth at LAX and they gave me a special rate. Less than $50 US. Regualr price is about $75US per night. Good for a stop over. The pool was not open when I was there in May. Newspaper for free in morning. There was a dining room but didn't eat there. There is a 24 hour MacDonald's down the street. Parking available but flew there so didn't have to use it - think you have to pay to park. Small shop - where I bought stamps and other souveniers not right in the lobby - across the drive in to check in part. There was a business centre (a few office machines) by there too.

Personal touch

The Clarion was a clean, well priced hotel in an excellent location for our tour group to see the sights of LA. The complimentary newspaper every morning was a nice personal touch and although the location was slightly questionable, the visible police presence served to make everyone feel very secure. Would recommend this hotel for any budget traveller.

Positives: The room was clean with adequate space and firm beds. The elevators were fast. Bail-bondsman just across the street.
Negatives: Too much noise: busy Century blvd. and the Airport combine to make a constant hum, making it a little hard to relax. The front desk is understaffed and overwhelmed at check-in time. Bellhop desk manned by indifferent, slouching types. Parking lot spaces are inbetween large concrete pillars that have been freshly painted to hide the scrapes, I reckon. Safe requires a key you get at front desk (they don't tell you) but when I inquired they had no key- "I'll have them send one right up." (never came) Adjacent McDonalds is a bit of a scumpit (lovely Inglewood begins here).
You can find a good price making this hotel almost worthwhile but I recommend trying to find a deal at the Renaissance or Doubletree El Segundo.

Could do better, could do worse

We were given a room with two double beds (we had forgotten to specify); staff was very accomodating about changing to a king. Room was clean; nothing special, but O.K. TV had remote, but reception was very poor, and surprisingly limited channel choice for L.A. --- Not much for food, etc. within walking distance, but free shuttle to airport. All the staff we dealt with were pleasant enough, if somewhat busy. OK for a one-night stay arriving or departing L.A., but you'd probably want something different for a longer stay.

Awkward to get to and signage is poor. Staff is OK but just ok.
This was a Quality Inn until recently. The paperwork still says Quality Inn.

Bad part of town. Just as we (finally) figured out how to get into the hotel (in the middle of the building ....) we saw literally 6-8 hookers walking around plying their trade. No mistake here ... it's not a great part of town.

Top Local Tips for Los Angeles

hire a car, it aint that scary i got some taxis on the first day which cost a fortune. after i got my confidence hiring a car was the best thing i did (i could keep my own timetable and stop and start where i wanted). stay alert if you drive on the other side of the road at home and get some good basic advice on how to get somewhere from the front desk. one cab trip cost the same as a 24hr car rental. but go online and youlll save 60% to book the car.
