A place to avoid!!

My mother and I (her daughter) recently stayed here during a Los Angeles anime convention. At first glance, the hotel is a paradise. Beautiful architecture despite an outward unattractiveness, incredible pool and garden area, and comfy - if small - rooms. We were especially pleased with the location, as it is a simple and comfortable walking distance from some nice restaurants and the convention center itself.

Don't let yourself be taken in by this!!

Upon settling in, we found a flea on one of our beds (we know it couldn't have come with us, because we live in an area where fleas can't survive). Upon returning home, we were infuriated to discover bug bites all along our arms and legs - anywhere our PJs didn't cover (we are not 100% certain these were picked up during our stay there, but the flea didn't really offer his vote of confidence). If you request a room and a hotel doesn't have it, they'll generally upgrade you as an apology - not here! We were downgraded to a room that could barely accomodate our needs. We were told after having several visitors - and not ONCE beforehand - that visitors, outside food, and generally being a social human being are not permitted. The bathrooms are tiny, and your water temperature while bathing is determined by who on your floor is flushing the toilet at any given time. Our third guest found this out when someone three doors down flushed...and she suffered a minor burn.

We were forced to pack a lot because of circumstances presented to us, and the manager openly accused us of lying about how many we were housing - first over the phone, and then to our faces! As if this wasn't enough, when we attempted to defend ourselves, he screamed at us in front of the entire lobby: staff, customers, and everyone else! I have never felt so undermined and insulted in my entire life, not even in grade school. He offered us no chance to explain ourselves, and proved to be incredibly rude and obnoxious towards us (yet we noticed he treated his male customers with much more respect)! When we tried to seek another audience with him, he ignored us and started badgering his staff.

Oh, and one more thing - they advertise 'free wireless,' but they make you pay eight dollars. And they won't accept cash; you must pay with a credit card or you don't get your internet. People there for business and e-mailing had best consider themselves warned.

In conclusion, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! I didn't even want to leave my dead skin cells behind, much less my mother's hard-earned money! That was the worst hotel experience of my entire life - and my family frequents a whole lot of hotels.

t Believe the Hype

My boyfriend and I met friends for drinks at the bar. It was lovely. I read all of these horrible reviews and had qualms about staying the night, but I was happily suprised. The room was clean and decorated nicely. The staff were all very nice. Basically I had a great time. It is in Downtown, it is not the Ritz people, but it is also not a dump or a dive. And an added bonus: The Pantry is a block down, breakfast lines get long on the weekends!

Really nice place with good management

Definitely eclectic but nice. The pool is beautiful and the hot tub large. Fabulous landscaping. The outdoor bar is a great meeting place. The rooms are fun-oriented and the beds comfortable. The lobby is from another time... very nice and beautifully done. Plenty of restaurants close by and two blocks from the LA Convention Center. It is not a Hilton... but it has character, atmosphere, and fun in its own style. Best Strawberry Marquerita in L.A.

Not worth it

Upon first look, the deco of the main area is nice but when I went up to the room I was quite disappointed. I've been in LA numerous times before so wasn't so disappointed in the area than I was with the room and with the staff. The staff was unresponsive to my concerns and were unfriendly. I had no patience to try and get to know "Uno." I figure the staff should make an effort to make me happy instead. But that wasn't the case.

Be sure to check out the courtyard.

I stayed at the Figueroa last October and noticed the reviewers missed one very important item. If you want the feel of getting away from it all, go to the back courtyard. The gardens are spectacular. The pool is inviting, and it is surrounded by tables, pillows, sculptures and a hot tub. The bar is there as well. It is staffed by bartenders who were a lot of fun. Yes, the beds are small and the rooms are dark, and the elevator moves at a leisurely pace, but the courtyard made me forget all of that.

Loved It!

It was a nice and clean enviornment. They treated me with respect. The staff was very helpful and answered all of my questions. The rooms were authentic and romantic. I think anyone who appreciates the Mexican culture would enjoy staying at this hotel.

Not all that bad...actually quite nice!

I have stayed at this hotel numerous times and found it quite different.....very nice, but different. You must remember you are in L.
A. and as they say, you get what you pay for. The staff is a little standoffish, but once you get to know "Uno" and he gets to know you...problems are snuffed right out. The reason I say that is because Uno does not tolerate people that give him a hard time. Nor does he like the type of person that always whines and is out to get "something for nothing". As for the decor...IT IS DIFFERENT, but that is part of the charm. Now, one thing I can tell you... most of the time I had the occassion to stay here was while I was driving a tour bus for a now out of business motor coach company. There was a room he used to give the drivers (I don't really remember the room number), but I do remember that the room had two doors to it an outer and inner door. It was TINY..but let me tell you, it had an air conditioner to kill for. In the summer time....I looked forward to that COLD room, especially in the daytime!!! The food served was pretty good, I did look forward to a good steak at the end of the day. I remember he had a cafe out in front..but I don't know if is is still there or not....they did have some good salads. If I were going to L. A. I would stay there again, it is off the beaten path but accessable to everything. Before you go, I STRONGLY reccomend a reservation......he does a lot of business with Japaneese tour operators and they do fill up the place quickly. If you do stay here, IT IS DIFFERENT, but as I said, thats the charm of it!!

Figueroa is great!

I almost didn't stay at the Figueroa based on some of the negative reviews I read. I'm glad I ignored them! Having no previous knowledge of LA or the Figueroa, this was my experience: The decor is beautiful.
My husband and I took many pictures of the lobby alone. Being a light sleeper, I asked for a room with empty rooms on either side. The desk clerk was friendly and accomodated us to the best of her ability. I slept great. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. From reading some of the reviews, I expected the neighborhood to be a war zone. In reality, it's just a regular downtown area like any city's.
There are business people all around during the day. At night, there was always something going on at Staples Center, so there were a lot of people around for that. There is a parking lot just behind the hotel and we never had trouble finding a spot. There's a nice walkway leading from the parking lot to the lobby. The Figueroa serves breakfast, but there's also a good breakfast place a block up the street. One morning, we went out on foot and explored the downtown area. Everyone at the Figueroa was friendly. I urge anyone to stay here.

Figueroa - happily go back

Surreal, you expect to find a privtae dectyetive in a long trench coat to come out from behind the wardrobe. The wind whistles through the gaps in teh windows and the ploice sirens wail away all evening, but this is LA.We stayed here as part of a longer coach tour. Situation is execellent, near to Macey's, the Staples convention centre etc. The atmosphere is something else, a mix of Moroccan/Indian/Mexican and all the rooms are tastefully decorated. OK, its' dark, and if you look closely the decor needs attention, but it's an experience. Has a great little cafe (a bit Cuban?).The only gripe was the price of the beers!

Quit dogging tha fig!

Come on, the Figueroa is NOT THAT BAD! In fact its quite rustic. Definitley not your American hotel, but it is BEAUTIFUL and UNIQUE! I love the Mexican theme, the dark rusty colors, and the staff. WHen I lived in LA my boyfriend and I would stay here all the time when he visited. Its fun and different. Kind of Romantic and it feels like you are in a totally different place when you step in! SO COOL! Quiet and a good price for being DIRECTLY infront of the Staples center and Convention center. Its also in the only safe block of downtown go up or down the street and its NOT COOL!Check out my school while you are down there Fashion INstitute of Design and Merchandising on 9th and Flower!GO FIG! Its your birthday! LOL

Top Local Tips for Los Angeles

Metro Rail We discovered that L.A. has a pretty nice subway system. We were able to walk from the Marriott a couple of blocks to the 7th Street Metro Hub. From there we took the subway to Universal City, about a 15 minute ride, $2.50 round trip. Once we arrived in Universal City, we walked across the street to a Universal Studios tram, which took us to the front entrance, sweet!

The Figueroa This place is fine if you have low standards, don't care about any amenities, don't mind that the basics are not even good like a full towel, and working phones in the room

Great steak ! I had the best steak ever at an Irish restaurant close to the Figueroa Hotel ! It's a quite expensive bar but it's worth it!
