Historical Traveller Reviews of Marriott Grand Residence Club Tahoe Hotel

I just spent 5 nights with my family at the Marriott Grand Residence in So. Lake Tahoe. After spending hundreds of nights at Marriott properties around the U.S. we were expecting "pure excellance". We were not disappointed. The staff are all "blue chip" performers with a sincere willingness to help the guests. The property is located in a ski village setting with plenty of shops, restaurants, movie theaters etc.. There is a grocery store (Raley's) across the street with additional shopping as well. The accomodations are excellant and very well kept. We had a two bedroom unit and a one bedroom unit as well. The one bedroom units are large for two people however you can easily sleep 4 people with a wall unit bed in the living area. The two bedroom units are roomy but not huge. The kitchen is very well stocked and even has a crock pot. They are all very tastefully decorated and kept spotlessly clean by a great housekeeping staff. The lake is within walking distance which is approximately 1/2 mile. The Spa is excellant and reasonable considering the location. The Nevada state line is just three blocks for those who care to "place a bet". The property only has valet parking which is $14 a day. Bravo Marriott...another great property with an outstanding staff!! Five Star!!
Nice rooms, terrible service
We stayed here for July 3-6, 2005. Beautiful rooms, but terrible housekeeping. We only got maid service once (even though these are timeshares we are not owners and thus we were entitled to maid service). All other times, even though we saw their cart on our floor, they bypassed us and we had to call to get service. One maid complained to my husband that she had already made up our room that day, thus denoting that we were lying. Also saw a maid doing her personal laundry in the guest laundry room which are free to guests. Actually, no one at the front desk knows that the laundry is there, much less free. My 1st night there I was told it was a send-out service. Then we found out there was a laundry there, so I went to the front desk, Tide in hand, asking for a roll of quarters to do my wash. They said they couldn't help me, and to go to the grocery store across the street. I explained that I needed to do wash, had little ones with me, didn't want to leave them alone in the room, etc. So, they painstakingly got me some from a back room somewhere. Mind you, they knew full well I was trying to do LAUNDRY! So, I get up to the laundry only to discover no place to put quarters in - another guest explained to me they were free - why did the desk put me and them through all this?????? Laundry rooms also had no table for folding laundry and were FILTHY - garbage all over the floor from overflowing garbage cans.
I tried to go sit by the pool - nice pool - but very few lounge chairs for the size of the hotel. By 8 am every chair was reserved with a towel on it by other guests, checked back several times, towels still there but no people on them. So, I couldn't sit out that day. I decided next day that I better reserve a couple of chairs for my family and did so. When the pool opened up at 8, all my chairs had been taken by other people, my towels, books and water bottles removed and put on the ground. The people on my chairs said there was nothing on them when they came out. So, another day with no where to sit. Plus the poolside tables were COVERED with tree pollen - in our 4 days there they were never wiped off.
All in all, I probably wouldn't stay here again - not worth the $300/night when you have to beg for towels and maid service and you can't even use the pool.
The place to stay on the South Shore
My wife and I stayed at the Marriott Grand Residence for 5 nights in March. The hotel defiantly exceeded my expectations. When we checked in they upgraded us to a 1-bedroom suite complete with Jacuzzi tub and 2 fireplaces. The kitchen was fully equipped and even had granite countertops. Every thing was very clean and new and up to the typical high Marriott standards.
I have read previous reviews complaining about the noise from the road or other rooms. Because of this I had requested a room that was on an upper level and was toward the backside of the building. We had no noise problems whatsoever.
Because the hotel is right at the base of the gondola for Heavenly it is incredibly convenient. The mountain is enormous. You simply cannot ski it all in a single day. When you ski Heavenly you get great views of the lake from most of the mountain. It is by far the best scenery in the U.S. One thing to consider, you will pay$10 for a hamburger on the slopes. You can ride the gondola down to the base village put a to go order in a Wolfgang Puck's Cafe pick it up and eat your lunch on the ride back up the mountain. Wolfgang puck's is one of the best values on the whole south shore. It is express gourmet food for a reasonable price. The best place we ate at during our trip was Evan's American Grill. A husband and wife team own and run the place. The chef is a spectacular cook. He was even voted one of America's top new chefs by Food and Wine. The desserts are not to be missed.
The base village is great. It is complete with a movie theater several restaurants and shops. You will even be able to walk to the casinos to gamble or see a show. The one thing that you do miss out on the South Shore is truly feeling like you are in a ski town secluded in the mountains. If that is what you are looking for then the south shore is not for you. if you want endless variety and convenience than the South Shore and the Marriott are defiantly the way to go. All in all it was another great Tahoe vacation in paradise.
Standard Room: Noisy

I arrived to the hotel through a summit snowstorm to the seemingly comfortable and peaceful ambiance of the hotel and my room. Unfortunately, my peace and comfort was compromised early the next morning as I was awaken by the voices of the housekeeping staff outside my door (speaking, swearing in spanish) as they dispursed from a housekeeping post/room. I also had to endure the loud voices of the guests in the room next to me to the point that I needed to turn the volume of my television on louder to drown out their conversations. Upon checking out I discussed with a female Hotel Services staff that I was displeased with the fact that I could hear the guests next door and was told that there are two solid doors that separate guest rooms and there shouldn't have been a problem. I am disappointed that paying $180 per night did not guarantee a quiet room. My room number was 2528.
Way to Go Marriott

My husband and I just returned from three days of skiing (4 nights) in Lake Tahoe (Heavenly). Took the Tahoe Casino Express from the Reno airport to the Grand Residence Marriott. This was our first time visiting Lake Tahoe in 10+ years. We weren't sure what to expect at the Grand Residence Marriott. We were unsure of its exact location and accessibility to restaurants and shops being that we did not have a car, but we were very pleasantly surprised. This hotel sits in a little village full of shops, restaurants/bars and even has an outdoor ice skating rink. This is a great place for kids (our kids stayed home this trip). The casinos are just a couple of blocks away (walking distance) along with some great restaurants. The gondola for Heavenly was right outside the hotel. You buy your lift tickets there, jump on the gondola which takes you up to the mountain to start your day of great skiing. The Grand Residence also offers a complimentary ski valet downstairs so you don't have to lug your skis/snowboards up and down the elevator and in and out of your room. The staff at the hotel was very pleasant and helpful. I would definitely revisit the Grand Residence.

We stayed in a 3bd penthouse and it was a great stay. The staff was very helpful and the location great. We will be going back for a another stay.I thought it was well worth the money.
m so glad I went with Marriott Grand instead of Embassy!
This place is awesome! We rented a 1 bedroom with the full kitchen..oven, stove, full size fridge, micro, stocked well with pots, dishes. Clean...beautiful...very well taken care of property. We were not even approached once with the time share and I was interested! I guess you get it at the free breakfast and we are late breakfast eaters and with the full kitchen, made our own. Jucuzzi tub in master..bathroom is huge...I didn't need anything. Gondola is right out the hotel. $22 for a ride up and back and $55 for 9-4 unlimited which includes your ski pass. Daughter went to ski school and had a blast.....bought a full package of darling pics they take with the Tahoe Ski School logo. Great trip...I'm def coming back..would love to check it out in the summer time. Big Grocery store right across the street...all kinds of shops and restaurants all within walking distance. Wonderful Staff.. Nice if they offered high speed interent is the only thing I wold suggest. Each room had nice tv and dvd player and both rooms had fireplaces.
$14.00 a night for parking + constant advertising
We stayed for two nights and were not impressed. First our room was right on the corner over Hwy 50 so it was loud. Then we find out that there is no guest parking and you have to pay $14.00 a night to park your car plus the tip for the valet everytime you want your car. Then one of the hot tubs was closed for the three days we were there. Then to top it off they offer a breakfast in the morning just like all the cheap hotels - coffee, toast, pastery but you have go to the sales office to get it and listen to a sales pitch the whole time.
No thanks I will not stay hear again.

The location is perfect for everything. We have stayed there in both winter and summer. The gondola is next door and the ski shops are on premis. The private beach is nearby and the pool and spas are great. The 1 and 2 bedrooms are the best value, full kitchens for cooking, saves money with a family, fireplaces and all the amenities.
Great family resort

We just came back from a 4 night stay from Aug 14-18. We stayed in a 2 bedroom 3 bathroom residence, tons of room. In the master bedroom there is a queen bed, fireplace, jacuzzi tub and separate shower. In the main living area there is another fireplace, two huge bay sitting windows, dining table, good size bathroom and a full kitchen. In the second bedroom there are two queen beds and a good size bathroom. The grounds are very nice and the area is in a perfect location, right at the Heavenly gondola and the Heavenly shops. Raley's is across the street as well as Baja Fresh, Quiznos, Starbucks, and just about any food you want to eat. The big casinos, Harveys, Harrahs are only a 5 minute walk right up the street. You get a pass to a private beach about a 10-15 minute walk down Park Ave. Very nice and quiet, restrooms and food service at the beach as well as Jet Skis and other watercraft to rent. The staff was great and very helpful, the pool is huge. There are also two big hot tubs. Try Fire and Ice a fantastic restaurant right outside the Grand Residence. We had a great time and will definitely go back again!
Top Local Tips for Lake Tahoe
Utilize Blue Go! If you're not within walking distance, use this service! Transportation to most hotels is only $2 and it runs all night. This service will take you anywhere in South Shore.
Shopping was interesting
While Lake Tahoe did not let us done (the lake was wonderful)...shopping was a challenge for me. Every shop I went into I was followed around the store. There were a few times I didn't buy anything because of it. It would have been a wonderful trip if it weren't for that. Cecil's Steak House and all the Cecil's shopping was the worst. We were going to eat at the local steak house, but was treated horribly and while in there shops I was followed the entire time while in their store.
arriving by bus to south tahoe
We went there from San Francisco by plane to Reno... figured it would be too risky to drive in snow. the plane was a ten-seater though. The took the shuttle bus from the airport which I booked from the internet. They were on time and it was a comforatble ride and I get to enjoy the scenery along the way. It was cheap ( around 40USD both ways/person) as compared to if you were to get a taxi. and they dropped us very near the hotel. Although there are some hotels where the bus directly stops . check out their website http://www.southtahoeexpress.com/ . I suggest booking before getting there.
