Historical Traveller Reviews of Best Western Station House Inn Hotel
We just came back from a 4-day stay at the Station House. Nice, clean rooms in a quiet setting. About 10 minute walk to the casinos and 5 minutes to the beach (make sure you ask for a beach pass at the desk). Friendly, helpful staff and reasonable rates. The best part was the full breakfast each day...great food and service (though I found the hostesses to be a little much for that early in the morning!). Overall, I would recommend the Best Western Station House.
Best value for your $$$$$
My wife and I stayed for 3 nights from April 19 thru April 22 and we were very happy with our stay....Right from the start, the management, housekeeping and even Bonnie (the hostest with the mostest) were wonderful...Our room was 208 (second level) and from out our door we can see Heavenly Mountain....There was very little noise during the week nights BUT the wall was a little thin on Friday night and you can here you neighbor a little bit.....The room was very comfortable and roomy (maybe due to the FULL wall mirror next to the bed....Nice cloth rocking chairs and a CLEAN bathroom/shower BUT the pillows can be a little larger especially for a King size bed....Location is ideal to mostly everything that happens in South Lake Tahoe (casinos,Heavenly Mountain, shopping and even the lake) all in walking distance......And like Bonnie would say "The pancakes are to die for" or anything else that's on the breakfast menue....A FULL breakfast is included each morning of your stay...just leave a tip because the service is great and we were never rushed out to make room for others waiting to be seated.....So for the price we paid and with breakfast included you just can't bet this price......If we ever get back out to this area again (New Englanders) we would definately stay here again without any questions asked....WELL WORTH THE MONEY (which is very reasonable)...Check it out for yourselves....
Clean, warm with great free breakfast
Well, we booked this hotel with a little concern because of some of the reviews we saw online but it turned out that it was a good place to stay. our room (#302) was clean with a very comfortable bed and a hot shower. It's comfortable hotel but not plush but for the price it was great value. Especially with the free breakfast and the very responsive staff. We've stayed in quiter places but after 8 at night we didn't hear a soul. We would stay there again.
Poor customer service from management

I chose Best Western Station House as part of a ski package because of its location and good rates. I stayed here for 3 nights. When I checked in there was a constant drilling in the wall from the room next door. I called the front desk and they said they were doing repair and it would continue for several hours and they could move me if I wanted. I did move and the next room was OK. Clean, small by American standards and ‘tired’ furnishing. The heat in the room went off by itself at 10 pm and by 1 am the temperature had dropped to 60 degrees. It stayed there until 7:15 am when the heater turned back on by itself. When I went into the office to complain, the person at the front desk took the information down and said they would look into it. I went off skiing. By 4 pm when I returned, no one had checked the problem out. The Assistant General Manager said he would send maintenance over. When maintenance arrived he checked out the entire system and said everything was working fine and was set correctly. He guessed what happen was that someone at the front desk turned off the unit at 10 pm thinking no one was in the room. He said that it happens with some frequency and when he is called with a heat problem on the weekend, before he comes in, he tells them to check the shut off board in the office to see if they turned off the heat by mistake.
When I informed the Assistant Manager he apologized for the problem but did not admit they had done it. I asked for the prior night to be refunded and he said he would have to talk with the General Manager. By the next day he still had no response. That night he said he could offer me $20 compensation. I told him that was not acceptable and he said I could complain to Corporate Customer Service at Best Western. I did that when I got back. They were very apologetic, explained that the Best Western Station House was not owned by them so they could not order management to do anything, but would check into it and get back to me. They did, and the Assistant Manager told them there was no problem, that I had set the thermostat at 60 degrees. Corporate Customer Service then offered to refund my first night’s stay.
No major problems, but not what I expected
I was looking for a place to spend a couple of days skiing with my girlfriend. This place was getting good reviews so I felt it was better to book something with the Best Western name rather than booking a local place. I was somewhat disappointed. The walls are really thin and you can hear voices from people next door and the hallway. We felt we had no privacy. The room itself was very small (booked a queen room) with a small bathroom. The closet sticks outward rather than being recessed into the wall which makes the room even smaller. I was also surprised that there was no refrigerator nor microwave. The furniture is old and tired, the carpet is many shades of green, the bed was not very comfortable and we had backaches the next day. The saving grace for this hotel is that it is very clean, and breakfast is included. Although the menu is not extensive, it is a full breakfast. Unfortunately, this means the restaurant is quite crowded when hotel is busy and it may be a long wait. I thought I might as well have paid a bit less at a no-name motel and used the savings to get breakfast elsewhere. The rate they offered for a suite was higher than we wanted to pay. We eventually checked out early and paid a little more for a much better room. If you do not care about room amenities and just was a clean place to sleep, then this might be a good choice, especially if travelling with children. The free breakfast would make this even better. If you are looking for a bit more, try looking elsewhere.

My husband and I stayed September 26-September 30 at the rate of $61.42 per night, with Thursday night $64. Although I originally booked a room with a queen bed, we were upgraded to a king bed (room 201), which was nice. The room was nicely furnished with two relaxing rocking chairs and end tables where two chocolate mints were neatly placed. A full breakfast at the nearby restaurant, LewMarNels, was included in the hotel price. The restaurant staff was friendly and courteous, and although the meal was complimentary, guests were asked to leave a gratuity for the wait-person. The inn is conveniently located just a few blocks from the lake and a few blocks from the casinos and Heavenly Gondola, which is great for those who want to leave their car parked in one spot and walk to your destination. Overall we were very pleased with everything and are looking forward to staying here again next year.
We stayed 3 nights over the Labor Day week-end and were quite impressed. It's one of the nicest motels at which I've stayed. The place is very well-maintained. It almost looks newly-built. The rooms were also very thoroughly cleaned, and everything was in working order. In a time where most hotels and motels these days seem to charge for internet connections, they have free unlimited internet connection, and it ran even more quickly than the 1.5 MB/s + cable connection that we get at home.
Even though all guests at this ~100 room motel get a cooked-to-order breakfast, we only had to wait once, and then it was for less than 15 minutes. They don't dawdle after you've placed your order (the restaurant has about 25 tables). The hostess Bonnie has a somewhat hyper/bipolar personality for my tastes, but no one could accuse her of being unfriendly--just rather ebullient (but quite nice).
I don't know what to make of those who complained about noise from their neighbors. Since this place participates with Hotwire (which is how we got our room), they were full the whole time we were there. Nevertheless, I never heard any sound from our neighbors' rooms. I usually bring along earplugs because I'm a light sleeper, but I never used them on this trip.
The location is about 1/2 mile from either the stateline casinos or the Heavenly gondola. In other words, a nice walk in dry weather, but probably not through snow, rain, or if carrying skis on your shoulder. The beach is even closer--an easy 1/4 mile.
My only complaints are with respect to room and especially bathroom size. The room is smaller than most Tahoe motel rooms, although it is well-equiped and has a fair amount of decent artwork. The bathroom is quite tiny, and one has to crawl over or sit on the toilet in order to turn on the shower or bathtub. Come on--one less room per floor & building would have allowed for standing room between the toilet and the tub/shower. At least the sink is outside the main bathroom area.
Even at the non-Hotwire rates, I feel this place is a good value for what you get, especially if you factor in the free hot breakfast and free very-high speed internet.

Stayed here for two nights (8/18-20/05) at AARP rate of $105/night + tax. Had a comfortable single queen bed. Entrance to Inn was very well landscaped. Grounds were clean, but parking was tight. Located a short distance off of the main road, but still centrally located to casinos and Heavenly. Within walking distance of the Lake, boat launch, and beach. Basically a quiet area, but walls were paper thin with loud-speaking neighbors. Room was very small, but workable, although we spent little time there. Breakfast, by far, was one of the best--a full menu all complimentary.
What a relaxing stay
We stayed recently at Station House for a quick 4 day get away. Now first let me say that we have been going to South Lake Tahoe for over 30 years. We have stayed at many motels near this one, and every time we walked by it, we kept saying: "we have to stay there some time, it looks so inviting". Well, we were'nt dissappointed. I read the reviews, but have learned to take negative ones with a grain of salt. Our room was clean and nicely appointed with a table and comfortable chairs. Yes it was a bit small, but nothing to get upset about. After all, we spent most of our time by the pool or taking a walk. The location of this motel is a real plus. It is a quick walk to the lake, resturants or the casinos. The breakfast one person was complaining about is great. Our experience was the oppisite. Plenty of attention (the hostess is a gem), good food and we never felt rushed. When you consider the breakfast is a $20 value and included in the room rate, this place is a great value. The pool is wonderful, just the right temperature and the hot tub nice too. They have beach towels for you to use, which is nicer than the small normal ones in the room. They were serving lunch and drinks from the bar by the pool or on the deck above. The sandwiches were delicious and reasonalbly priced. We had high speed internet in the room and they even loaned us a cable as we forgot ours. All the staff were friendly and helpful to us. It was so relaxing, we felt like we had been gone for a week. I would go back in heart beat!!
Trouble this year
Our group stayed there 5 years ago. We loved it then, so we went back this year. What a mistake! All our problems had to do with the restaurant. Breakfast is supposed to come with the room. It IS a good breakfast. They have a special menu for guests. But you had better get there early, eat fast and get out. No daudling over coffee. My mother had her plate removed half way through her breakfast. We had to pour our own coffee after the first cup. The restaurant isn't that big and they didn't appear to be short-staffed. The staff appears to have short tempers. We reserved the dining room for a birthday party. They stuck our group in the middle and seated other guests in booths around us. Like I said, the place wasn't that big. There was very little privacy. We had to order the dinners for the birthday in advance. Then we were charged double for the meals. ???
Top Local Tips for Lake Tahoe
At first you don't realize how much there is to do at Lake Tahoe--when we go back we will plan for at least 4 or f5 days.
I talked my husband into this, but would not recommend a trip up the Heavenly Gondola. It was expensive ...$28 per adult!.....and there is not much up there. The first stop is a scenic overlook.....very pretty and way high up, but not worth the money. The second stop has an outdoor restaurant and the gateway to some hiking trails. They were closed the week we were there for the fires, but I still wouldn't recommend a $28 price to go hiking ofrsee scenery. So many other locations to see the scenery and go hiking that won't cost you $60 per couple! Save your money and have a nice lunch.
Mexican food at Lake Tahoe
La Cantina near Richardson Camp is a great restaurant. Good food, drinks, ambience, waitresses, everything. We enjoy this place every time we are in Tahoe.
